Bevin vs Beshear for KY governor

I'm voting against anyone who opposes marijuana and gambling. Regardless of party. Period. This state has been backwards for way too long!

For some voters, there are individual issues they feel so strongly about that they override every other issue.
For me, it's the abortion/planned parenthood thing. Other things are important but this one will determine my vote. I will NEVER vote for a candidate that supports any type movement, funding of a program, legislation, etc...that will contribute to, lead to or permit the killing of children. Period.

Thank you. I agree, it is that important

The “save the unborn” candidate for governor, Matt Bevin, is shamming a lot of gullible voters on the abortion issue. Just last year, he made campaign donations to a pro-choice private school classmate in Maine who received perfect ratings from Planned Parenthood. He’s a straight out carpetbagging liar campaigning on issues he has no strong moral convictions over.

False
This article is over a year old and in the Curious Urinal.
Any chance he just donated to a friends campaign because they are friends?

Marijuana and gambling...SMH

Why SMH?

I've never done either but they should be legal. Adults should be able to choose if they want to do these things. Every other state is/will legalize both in time but our backward ass state will be last. Kentucky has too many goody goodies that think gambling and marijuana are "bad" or "sinful". The state is losing money that they could be making on both the longer they put it off.

False . . . LMAO! Just because something is a year old makes it untrue? Just because you don’t like the source makes it untrue? A friends campaign . . . absolutely possible but still makes Bevin (tRump lite) a hypocrite. You always a snowflake when the truth is given to you?

Gambling is legal and long as it's the lottery or on horses. Bevin is a hypocrite.
Come on now, it’s only $250-$500 million a year when the pension hole is much more. Why would Kentucky want that revenue when every state surrounding us is taking it? The dude is a hypocritical holier-than-thou snake oil salesman. And 50% of Kentucky voters will buy it hook, line, and sinker.

Snowflake? I don’t think so. Hypocritical, maybe. I’ll take my chances with a guy who has a good track record against abortion vs a guy who actively and vocally supports it.

I really don't care what the guy "feels" about abortion. I'm more interested in his actions. If he tries to shut down pp centers i.e abortion centers, I'm for him. Whereas we know the other guy openly supports women's right to murder her child.

Deciding who you're going to vote for using marijuana and gambling as the main reasoning is ridiculous IMO. They are short term fixes that would create long term problems.

Apparently there are those in Kentucky who would be willing to throw away all of the economic growth Bevins has promoted for Kentucky over a joint or a $2 bet on the Cats. And we wonder why politics is so screwed up. Does Kentucky want to go back to the corrupt "good ole' boy network" of the Democrat Party and their anti- business, anti-job growth, anti- low taxes and no economic growth? Really?

I'm not even against gambling, but it needs to be done wisely. Make the hardest hit areas of Eastern KY a gambling zone, if possible. Something that would draw in outside money to help rejuvenate the local economies. With a long term vision to make it a destination.

IMO, the most viable possibility of having a good economy lies in tourist industries. There are people that would pay a lot of money to spend weekends in a cabin watching the wildlife, fishing/boating in an area like the mountains of a Martin County.
While I'm not a fan of gambling, but if we're going to allow gambling on horses, why not other forms of gambling? In past conversations, pols and horse industry people have supported gambling but only at tracks and/or with proceeds supporting that industry. Certainly not a fan of that angle. If we're going to have casinos, put them in E Ky. Build infrastructure that should have been built with coal money. Build lakes for reservoirs. Build more parks around those lakes. Build a tourism industry down there.

Bevin is an idiot at times and makes ridiculous Trumplike statements. It often over shadows the good he’s done. However...

He didn’t create or exasperate the pension debt. That was done by Beshear’s daddy. However.....

You don’t piss on ideas like casinos and sports gaming without consideration. And he is. That’s stupid to ignore it completely and will possibly cost him the election, fair or not.

It’s not a stretch to wonder why Trump is coming to KY again. Bevin is in trouble.

The real issue is that, like our national election, we have terrible choices.

And to make my opinion clearer on gambling and legalized mj;

The fact that this state gambles like hell at racetracks, lottery sales and SLOT MACHINES already makes us more than a tad bit hypocritical about gambling. What they really mean is that the racetrack lobbyists want casinos but only at THEIR TRACKS.

As for legalizing mj. I have mixed feelings. I despise drugs. I think drugs are the scourge of America. But I can’t ignore the medical mj benefits. I know folks with my disease(RA) benefit from it. So I’m mixed.

That’s it. Sorry for the long posts.

Gambling you say. In 1987 when the lottery was being talked about. We were all told that if the lottery became law that the states financial problems would become a thing of the past. Well, how did that work out?

Casinos are supposed to do what for our state exactly? You can't say because it's negligible at the very best, and frankly it's not worth much discussion at all. Do it or don't, idgaf, and neither does anybody else. You can gamble online 24/7 if that's your thing. If you truly believe a politician when he tells you casinos are going to "fund our ____", well that's just sad. More power to you...

Voters care about jobs, the economy, etc.

Gambling is certainly not the cure. But to simply ignore its impact without consideration is not logical or wise.

The pension problems took years of corruption and mismanagement to create. It will take years to fix. And sacrifices will have to be made. That’s the part that rankles the ranks. Yet the ranks refuse to blame past administrations that got them there.

Who’s ignoring its impact? Bevin has addresses it many times.

We don’t know the impact, but I can guarantee that tax money won’t help citizens one bit.

Yea, people will be able to go play some slots and have fun! Great! Criminals will also be able to easily wash tons of money - that’s the #1 reason for casinos.

Bevin explores it by stating people commit suicide in casinos every day. What kind of happy horseshit stupid talk is that?

Casinos are not necessarily the answer for sure. And they definitely bring another dimension of problems with them. But they may( or may not) help a state that gets closer to bankruptcy than curing it. Let’s see real numbers. Hey, maybe even put it on a ballot for the people to decide.

My point is we are already doing it and pretending it’s not there. Ever been to the slots on Poplar Level? I have. Only things missing are dice and cards. They make millions for Churchill Downs so they can raise purses on horse races WHERE PEOPLE GAMBLE! It’s pure hypocrisy.

No, he says that just like Beshear says they're gonna put 500million into the pension. That's just politics. Both are stupid, but one statement is a lot more true than the other...not that it matters here.

Point is both have "explored" it, and it's up to the voters to pick which side they agree with it. Personally, I don't believe enough people really give a crap, and I think it's a poor political talking point. I mean, hell, look at KY man...bringing up gambling is kind of desperate, you're alienating a large chunk of this state right off the bat, and speaking mostly to a small, specific demographic. . I don't understand why Andy has not gone hard on marijuana...probably because Bevin actually agrees with him, and has been a proponent of medical mj, and has a much more commense view on it. I think the mmj card would work a lot better than casinos. Maybe "polling" says otherwise.

And good for you, keep gambling. I would rather you gamble illegally and keep as much money you can away from the government. Those bastards have wasted enough, and they don't deserve what they get now.

Yeah we were robbing the kids of their education by not having the lottery money but for some reason my kids school ask the parents for a list of supplies every year because there isn't money for them.

No problem with med mj but we don't need more people out there running around/driving around with impairment.
You are right re: the racetracks. Their wanting to monopolize gambling/casinos is crap. If we're going to have gambling, let's at least do it in a way that maximizes profit and designates profits to support real needs....not just horse racing.

Politics is screwed up because society is screwed up. As long as we can freely smoke a joint or place a bet, who gives a rat about killing a child......wow.

Doesn’t matter what they legalize or what politicians promise to fix by legalizing it...the revenues will be diverted, misused, mismanaged, embezzled, or otherwise generally wasted by any reasonable measurable standards.
Exactly.
IMO, The role of an elected politician should be to represent the interests of his constituents but ultimately, make the decision that benefits the state/country. With each pol focusing only on re-election, we have the group make lots of foolish decisions just so each pol can say he went to bat for his district.
Example: New highway in a little traveled part of the state; Grants to build a golf course here or there; A new courthouse for smith county; Tax dollars to feed pet projects/supporting orgs like national arts programs, etc... instead of focusing on big issues that impact the entire state nation.
Term limits are needed badly with limits being one or two terms. No re-election 30 years from now...just two terms.

Term limits would solve so much of what ails us. 12 years maximum for anybody in Congress! Yes, I mean both democrats and republicans.

I agree in theory.

But, what do you do with the staffers. The people that are not known to the public? The ones that move on to the next pol that is elected.

Look at The Squad. They are figureheads for something bigger.

Edit: Sorry to delve further off-topic. Quick, somebody explain why Trump voters are gonna vote for the the good man Beshear!

While I will vote for Bevin and am a Trump voter, I can understand why some will flip to the dark side.
Some like beshear's stance on marijuana and gambling and that seems to be a big issue.
Some don't like Bevin's brashness. It's a quality that becomes Trump and makes me like how he deals with pols and foreign nations but it's not becoming on Bevin. It makes him look like a petulant kid.
Some take exception to how he spoke about teachers. Though he is at least trying to resolve the problem, he comes across as....well...petulant.

Yeah but at least we could have fun smoking weed and betting on sports. :sunglasses::sunglasses:

As he should have. I am glad he didn't backtrack on any of his comments. The teachers mess was also compounded by their refusal to acknowledge that this problem started well before Bevin....and they were silent then.
