Basketball boosters

Are you on the admissions committee? Have you personally read or reviewed thus kids admissions credentials? We are not playing a statistical game here or making inferences based on population characteristics. This is one person that is applying to the university and unless you have direct access to the committee or you have one on one experience with this kids, you know nothing that will serve to contradict anything admissions has done. Bluster and babbling population data contributes nothing here except to rationalize a desired result

Further, there are many reasons why admissions criteria might vary from one country to another. One very simple one would be to attract certain ethnic backgrounds to the institution.
See the bold print, and then realize that response proves what I said originally, which is they are already making exceptions for the policy, as I stated the first time. And the only way that list of exceptions would make sense would be if English was the primary language for all of them, but it isn't. So let's just say it is for the reason you stated, that isn't an exception based on the fact that they are proficient in English, but based on something that doesn't even apply to the basis of the test.

I’m not arguing with you, just having a conversation . I’ve worked in Higher Ed (including athletics) for a long time now. I’m very aware how admissions standards are lowered for athletes. If he doesn’t get into UK and no other school takes him, I’m cool with it. If he doesn’t get into UK and another school, most likely with stricter admission standards, admits him, then it will be another story.
Who cares what other schools do? That’s their problem.

You know this is true for students with something other than English as a primary language? I frankly doubt that.

UK athletics represented about 2% of the school’s revenues last year.

Perhaps Capiluoto is giving this situation the amount of attention that is appropriate given the size of the athletics department relative to other parts of the university.
🤣

The amount of money generated by UK athletics pales in comparison to the amount of money generated by UK Healthcare. Nationwide awareness of our basketball team among casual fans is certainly a nice thing to have, but it’s ultimately worthless if that’s not translated into revenue.

UK Healthcare is the single most important entity for the University by a long shot.
🤣

Do the math. Even if you assume all of those extra enrollments were purely driven by sports success, the revenue still doesn’t come close to what UK Health is generating.

UK Health pulled in $2.8 billion last year, and the Board announced this past spring that they were planning a $2.4 billion dollar expansion.

Healthcare, like many other large universities with hospitals, is where UK makes most of their money. Focusing on healthcare is where Capiluoto and the Board spend the majority of their time. If you don’t believe me, then ask them.

🤣

That's when that idiot said Trump would never be President. 🤡

You're an idiot if you think this is the case- I mean truly, you're a moron if you think it's that black and white.

UCONN applications skyrocketed after they won the title again this year. LSU had a record freshman class after the Joe Burrow year- and a record yer for fundraising across all of campus.

Attendance and applications can be directly related to athletic success.

Boosters donate more money to the university as a whole when athletics are good (which does not get contributed to the athletic departments bottom line).

More apparel and branded merchandise is sold when athletics are good. (Which also mostly does not get contributed to the athletic departments bottom line).

The public and national perspective of an entire university and in our case, an entire STATE, change for the BETTER when athletics are good.

The local economy is impacted when athletics are good (bars, restaurants, shops, people driving in from all over the state to attend games and stay in hotel rooms, etc.)

Athletics is the "Front Porch" of every university in America almost.

Do you think Alabama is a national brand because of their academics?

Did Gonzaga become a household name because they have great science teachers?

You think alumni and boosters/donors are lining up to donate a bunch of money to the school because we signed a new Economics professor or win a math competition?

2% my ass- Athletics has about as big of an impact on a university's bottom line as anything else I can think of besides healthcare potentially (because that's the biggest scam in America)- because it impacts SO MANY OTHER THINGS (fundraising, applications, attendance, local economy, etc.) and sports can single-handedly change the reputation of an entire school and an entire STATE.

Healthcare ain't doing that.
I couldn’t imagine picking a school based primarily on athletics success.

Welp, that's you. Tons of people do pick their school based on that.

Or they pick a school because, "My parents were Florida fans so I grew up a Florida fan, so I always wanted to go there"....why were their parents such big Florida fans? Because of the geometry department? Or because of the athletics program?

Do you have proof he can’t? Next.

When the whole forum is telling you your an idiot maybe it’s time you read the room.
I’m not the one deciding he is admitted or not. Why would I be a nosy AH and delve into the kid’s private matters? Oops….

You think admissions requirements are the same for every student? In state, out of state, international? It’s pretty simple. The admissions folks are concerned about student success. You care about basketball. Their concerns take precedent.
The admissions folks are concerned about student money. FIFY

Do you (think) know everything or are you just an admissions expert?
It’s kinda like running from a bear I don’t have to know everything. Just have to know more than you.

Funny how just a little reality just pisses all over conspiracy theories and made up BS.

That's fine. But if their status as "Big Boosters" can't bring pressure to bear to make this happen, what good are they?

It is not the role of boosters to change university rules. If you have not noticed, people have recently gone to jail for using their influence to get nonqualified applicants into colleges. Scandal and investigation. Is that what you want at Kentucky?

amazed and frustrated that some clerks are being allowed to mess with what amounts to the University's biggest status symbol and most reliable source of revenue generated from donors. To issue a statement like UK did by its chief spokesman last week -- "We are all working diligently to make this happen" then to apparently fail for no good reason

How do you know there is "no good reason"? Aren't you just expressing what you want to happen? Maybe there actually is a reason. The tendency of people on this board to leap to premature conclusions is a product of anonymity and lack of knowledge. What do you know about Ivisic's application file and how it stacks up to the requirements? You don't.

All of us want Ivisic in a Kentucky uniform. But if you can't get what you want, you tar and feather the admissions office. Without the Univ. of Kentucky, there would be no basketball team. There would be no basketball tradition. There would be no fan base. Look how fast many of you throw the school under the bus without knowledge.

Has it occurred to you that John Calipari could have phoned the admissions office and sought their guidance BEFORE offering this scholarship to a 20 year old east European FIBA player? Is that a lot to ask of our basketball coach? After all, he is in charge.

Know a couple of big boosters who are in a holding pattern watching the Z situation. They're VERY upset how this is going to affect the program, recruiting wise, monetary contributions and public opinions nationally. Upset this puts undue pressure on President Capaluto, which they're very supportive.
President Capaluto would have no pressure if he would be a good leader and end this right now. If it’s just an admissions issue over something as trivial as this then he should sign the waiver and let him begin.

This. It may not be right or even fair, but athletics in this day and age are the face of many a university.

For example, if you mention the University of Alabama, are people going to go, "Oh yeah, they have a great law school!" (which they do...renowned actually). No! They're going to go, "Oh yeah, they always have a great football team!"

Same goes for Auburn. Known for two things: Football and Vet School.
Duke? Basketball and Law.

There are UK fans al over the place including in Japan, China, and Scotland. And I guarantee you it isn't because UK Healthcare is so great (which it is).
I guess it depends on who you ask. There are many folks who focus on academics who couldn’t care less about sports.

That's true. I'm talking for the general public. If sports didn't matter, they wouldn't rake in MILLIONS. I mean Jarred Vanderbilt just landed 12.5 million a year to play basketball.

Stoops and Cal make a combined 17 MILLION a year. Universities of course care about academics as it's their original purpose. But they aren't stupid. They know what brings in revenue.

Parking was a fairly close second when I sat in on the BOT meeting. Granted that was 9 years ago, and COVID has probably changed that.

It is ABSOLUTELY going to impact recruiting going forward, especially internationally.
We can let millions of illegals cross the border, feed, house, provide medical treatment and clothe them. But, we cannot hire a interpreter for 16 hours a day to attend classes and go to practice with Z.

People need to quit responding to him. He's a troll. Not even a UK fan.
The fact that he's defending the admissions shitbirds that are blocking the admission of one of OUR players should tell you all you need to know.
