Back to "testing the waters"

We're likely to see a lot more recruitment like Murray's in the future. The elite recruits will be waiting to see who stays in the draft and who comes back before making their decisions.

Could be a good thing.

Lee could test the waters, get some feedback to improve his game and return for his Senior year. I can see Ulis doing that as well.

Why wouldn't every kid (within reason) do this?

Only downside is the waiting game. We might not know who we will have back until mid-May.

Great for the kids. Not so great for the schools.

Gives the kids further reassurance in whatever direction theyre leaning. But it leaves the school in a bit of a waiting game when it comes to recruiting.

I think of lot of these "kids" will then test the waters, but not come back. IMO they will not believe the GM's, but get caught up in the hype from friends and family (get talked into signing with an agent) and get stuck, then go undrafted.
I think that before...they did not participate in the combine. Just could declare, ask around and then change their mind

Don't think it will hurt us too much...none of the 7 guys who declared this year would come back under this setup.

If you hate this you're selfish IMO. Its about whats best for kids, not fans and rich coaches and AD's. If you're worried kids will all declare and not comeback thats illogical IMO. The kids that would be so caught up in their own hype are the ones declaring already.

I think this will cover most of the "testing the waters". Kids will have so many people pushing them to actually declare, very few of them will come back imo. The concern from a program standpoint is: how long will they wait to be all in? Id say most will hire a agent pretty quickly. But some of the borderline picks may take their time. That will hurt if you have recruits about to decide.

Still, its definitely best for the kids.

I think Aaaron Harrison could have really benefited from this set-up. You gotta think he would have come back given his current draft stock.

Makes you wonder if Cal told him the same thing this year that the GMs would. Basically...there's a good chance you may not get drafted.

I think they should go even further let the kids go through the draft and come back and play if they decide they did not like what happened in the draft. Basically I think any kid that isn't drafted in the first round or were offered a guaranteed contract should be allowed to return. They haven't really turned pro if they do not sign a pro contract

He could have probably played his way in to early to mid second round but all indications were that he had a terrible combine and several lackluster workouts. Aaron's skills are odd though. He kinda has to show you in game what he can do. Percentages aren't that great either but he comes through when you need him.

I am afraid that the scouts see what I see. The twins are not very athletic and are not great shooters. There is just better options out there than either of them if you want to draft guards. They are big and have some skills but IMO the NBA is not going to project them as having potential to have great future improvement. I doubt that either goes in the first round. Andrew probably has the best chance of the two because of his ability to run the point and he is a much better ball handler. I am afraid that Aaron might not even be drafted.

Except for the money their agents front them, all the paid travel and expenses they get from teams, etc.

Those kids knew their status going in, some guys just want to leave and try to make money.

I don't think it's THAT simple. Sure they want to make money, who wouldn't. Aaron was projected to be drafted until he had a bad combine and a few lackluster workouts. I'm pretty sure Aaron thought he could improve his draft stock by performing well, but he didn't. The realization that he was likely to go undrafted would be enough IMO to come back.

This is the way it was beforehand. So recruits are going to have to wait a few more weeks, big deal. This is the smart thing to do and was stupid to go away from it in the first place.

To me it's a choice of what's good for a kid or a school.... glad to see they made what I think is the right choice... what's in the kid's best interest.

It will make it tough to get a good read on who is going where compared to now, b/c more kids will test, making a clear read much harder to get.

It gets frustrating as fans because you'll see a lot of kids drag out the recruiting process, and players will wait until the last minute to come back--and then you're in limbo with the roster for a while.

The thing at UK: We're already recruiting like we're losing everyone. I'd say Cal will keep recruiting the same way, and then if kids come back--recruits can make their decisions.

If this had been in place this year--does Aaron come back for a year? I'm not sure, he may feel he can't improve his stock anymore. But, I'd love for him to have that option and would be giddy if decided to return.

A lot of kids would return if they knew their true status in the draft. Time for the NCAA to just quit with psudo amateur thing and let kids come back that went through the draft and were not satisfied with their position and would like to return to college and continue their education.

Actually in a most cases, it is that simple. Guys don't want to stay in college all 4 years and if that means not getting drafted, some are OK with the alternatives.

Aaron was always projected as 2nd round at best, he knew there was a decent chance of going undrafted. Coming back wasn't helping him.

Dakari Johnson was leaving regardless, his backup plan was/is overseas.
