Ashton Hagans Snapchat

For some who think the video and the inference of money is no big deal....wasn't there a video a year or so ago of the brother of the kid we were recruiting who went to Texas (?) sitting by the pool with gold chains around his neck talking about his brother getting benefits during recruitment? As I recall this board exploded.
Well one is his brother point blank saying he took illegal benefits, the other is a 30 second video of a kid holding cash and people jumping to conclusions. Also nothing came of the Mo Bamba ordeal so even less reason to worry.

Thanks...couldn't think of Bamba's name and I didn't think it led to anything in that he played and we didn't hear anymore about it. And agree on AH. My point was that as I recall this board jumped to conclusions (probably even more so) about Bamba and UT. So, It's not a good look at all by AH, immature and dumb, and just gives other schools/fans ammo against UK.

It's like most of y'all didn't even watch the video, I knew it was fake money the whole time, it was obvious if you watched the video a couple times and paused it. These are 18-19 year old kids, hell even I make stupid funny videos on my snapchat

You must have way better eyes than me (and I'm just about 20/20) or you have much better equipment than me. I've watched it and tried pausing it and the money just looks like a blur to me, I can't tell anything about it.

You are correct. We could have all hypothesized and yes it was more than likely not real. That said, I am with ya, was up in the air until the above pic which confirms it. Bill on outside as no numerals on corners.

of course Mr. Woke Matt Jones makes this racial.

like no one would care if Sestina was doing this after transferring in from Bucknell (or wherever he came from). Everyone would be perfectly fine with a Caucasian kid waving stacks of money as a UK player..yea...lets go with that

I'm just now seeing this...wow. I read somewhere that the video is old....but cannot believe he was dumb enough to post that given his current situation....its time to boot this kid.

At the end of the day Ashton Hagans made a bad decision. I feel like people are mixing up the timeline of all this stuff though. Hagans posted this video a while back, not after his suspension- that is relevant to the narrative, but irrelevant to what I am responding to, lol.

I agree with your comment. UK reacted swiftly to poor behavior with Tai Wynard (for example).

This has nothing to do with race unless you make it that way. MJ was out of whack with his response which I think was geared towards him disliking that UL sherriff fella.

lol so I checked out yesterday after the original theories got embarrassed thinking that was the end of it. Turns out they just went to the next, even worse theory.

This thread gets a lot shorter if you use the ignore feature properly. If mods won't clean up that garbage, at least we don't have to see it.

Just the fact that UK's compliance department had to address this is a HUGE deal. Ashton should be off the team. I hate to say that because we need him (more or less) for a potential Final Four run but this is intolerable and unacceptable.

Hagans did a stupid thing and the university handled it poorly from a perception stand point. It looks as if they are sweeping something under the rug.

Anyways, last 2 weeks have not been very good for Hagans, showing very poor judgement on several levels. I am not comfortable giving the reins to the team to him, maybe Cal is.

Careful making assumptions. We have no idea what these kids actually go through.

I will say this too, a lot of positives came out of that Florida comeback, but arguably the most important thing: we now have a viable 2nd option at PG.

I agree, I think people are mixing up the timelines.

I also fully believe Cal will handle Hagans in the best possible manner. At the end of the day, Cal isn't going to let Hagans hold back the team. No way am I on board with this idea that Hagans needs to go. On the surface this is nothing as is the pushback to Cal during the game. I hate that its at the end of the season but I suspect there is immense pressure on Hagans to improve and be better than he is, when he is already leading the #6 team in the nation.

Hagans is a 19/20 year old kid doing things that 19/20 year old kids do

Unfortunately he doesn't have the luxury of getting a pass for being a 19 year old kid when he signed up to be a Kentucky player

I have a 19 year old and I'm reminded almost daily of just how different their thought processes are, especially in regards to awareness.

At the end of the day, Hagans is a very public representative of the University of Kentucky. In today's world you step out of line once and 700K people know about it 72 hours later.

This is nothing about race, its 100% about good judgement

I think some brakes need to be pumped. Using the facts at hand this is what we know.

°Video posted- appears to be Hagans flaunting fake money somewhere around 10-20 days ago

°Hagans refuses to go back in game last week

°Hagans suspended from game Saturday

°Video becomes widespread public knowledge besides some hinting at it on this board, podcasts, radio

°UK states video is dated and it has been addressed with compliance, etc

Using the above FACTS one could SPECULATE (which is fair because there are facts) that Hagans video may have been known by UK prior to Tennessee game and he was under an immense amount of stress due to his poor behavior. This could have caused him to act out further during the game Tuesday and ultimately led to his suspension.

Assuming this to be the case I think it would be a bit over the top to kick the kid off the team. He made a mistake, his teammates love him and he did nothing illegal, just something stupid. Again, UK compliance nor Cal would not let him play if there was jeopardy in doing so IMO.

the two may be connected. I have no idea

Honestly, venturing a guess on what little info I have

My thoughts about Hagans lashing out on the bench and not wanting to go back into the game was probably the pressure he is getting to stop making turnovers.

He is struggling with having to drive to be aggressive, to create more offense, to including his teammates, but yet he gets his hand slapped when he tries and doesn't execute well - leading to his frustration on the bench. You have someone like Jimmy Dykes saying on TV "is there another point guard in America that misses more open layups than Hagans?" and other multiple talking heads focusing on UK's tourney changes dependent on Hagans improving his game by a noticeable factor in just a few days time.

but that and a $5 will you an espresso at Starbucks

I doubt that anyone held a gun on Hagans and forced him to make that video. These kids go thru a lot both positive and negative .Hagans has been here 2 years.I can't imagine how anyone who has been in the fishbowl for that long would not understand that the video is something you just don't do.

Cal is in a tough spot a case can be made for playing Hagans but an equally good case can be made for not playing him. Which ever choice Cal makes I am good with it because he is the one making the big bucks.

I think the school should address the issue before the start of the tournament(not Cal but the administration) then let Cal make the call if there is one to be made.

For the record, nothing about the video was worthy of any punishment beyond a reminder about public behavior and some laps after practice.

Ashton was suspended for his behavior at the end of and following the Tennessee game.

That appears to have been a wake-up call for him about the poor decision making and attitude he had apparently been demonstrating lately.

Nothing he's done is even close to warranting the type of punishment some of you are calling for. They don't even kick guys off the team who are no longer amateurs. They don't kick guys off the team who get into brawls on the court or in practice. They don't kick guys off the team in many instances for actually being arrested.

So if you want him off the team for arguing with Cal publicly and playing poorly as of late, fine, it's just an awful opinion based on absolutely zero precedent and you should be thoroughly ashamed of being so terrible.

I still don't quite understand why so many people act like they want him off the team. The 2/3 people he got into it with said they support him. Did you want to throw T jones off the back then when he and cal got into it? or is it because UK compliance had to look into something? Did you say the same about Bledsoe, Wall, etc?? what makes this different the fact that he struggled on the court? Sorry not even close to being worthy of kicking someone off the team

doesn't seem like you are using the ignore feature

Guys who would be gone if the Hagans standard was applied:

1. Wall
2. Dodson
3. Bledsoe
4. Kanter
5. Terrence Jones
6. Lamb
7. Harrellson
8. Liggins
9. Briscoe
10. Noel
11. Harrow
12. Skal
13. Bam
14. Orton

And pre-Cal era, it's even more. Jodie Meeks' Escalade and presence on campus wasn't exactly low-key. Rex showed up in a custom Camaro. If eligibility concerns that compliance had to briefly look into, or questionable social media decisions, or fighting with Cal or teammates gets you kicked off the team, the last decade would look a LOT different.

Plus, we'd be putting ourselves waaaay behind the 8 ball against every other school.

It's a bit more than that. Those of us frustrated with Hagan's have several reasons. Fighting with a coach, on it's own? no big deal. When you couple it with him leaving the team/suspension, his poor play, Snapchat money, etc.. and it becomes alarming.

The basketball heads here will slam me, but I'm still not convinced we *can't* be a better team without him. We would miss his defense and the depth, but it's wayy too early to assume that Maxey couldn't be a better fit. The problem is that it might be too late to successfully insert Maxey into this role to make a deep run. But yes, I do believe if Maxey had the starting PG spot back in January, we'd be very likely better off.

I was under the impression that the suspension was for the 2 things mentioned...

Does anyone have that picture of Kevin Ware and Chane Behanan riding in a Mercedes convertible together? Someone should tweet that picture to the Sheriff and ask him if he ever figured out how they got such a nice car. Once he gets that figured out then he can start to worry about Hagan's wad of cash.

is the consensus he was suspended for the game? Because personal reasons and suspended are two very different things.
Like I said multiple times, the university has done a terrible job getting in front of this. They have left too much room for speculation. For the ones that say it has been handled, fine. But if everything was on the up and up, what does it hurt for the AD to issue a statement to the effect “ we investigated this video and determined that Ashton did nothing wrong or illegal and have closed this investigation. Ashton may have shown poor judgement, but we are behind Ashton 100%”.

Because it would be making a Mt. out of a mole hill and would just stir up more buzz about nothing significant.

I think it's likely he and Cal came to an "agreement" that he needed some time away to clear his head. I think if Ashton had disagreed with that, he'd have still missed the game Saturday.

Have you ever read a public statement before?

All I saw was it had been addressed. No more explanation forth coming. Well that brings more questions than answers. I guess we will all know Friday. But to me the university has done a piss poor job on this.
That’s what I’ve been saying. They addressed it, but we do not know what that means. What was the results/outcome?

maybe they never expected it to be out there like this

but now you have it on twitter, and you have Matt Jones and his collection of followers and detractors commenting on it. You've got a multi page thread on the biggest collection of UK fans on the net

which then in turns opens this up to discussion to a much larger media audience who use both Jones and this site as sources for any and all things UK basketball

and whether the connection is there, its pretty tempting for anyone in the media to discuss bad judgement, talking back, missing a game and tie it all together

I'm a big believer in you create the narrative or you have to respond to the narrative someone else has created.

I'm in compliance. The fact that compliance "addressed it", only means they looked into it (investigated), and most likely notified the NCAA, and provided their findings...

Since Calipari is expecting him back Friday, I don't think that would be the case if there was any kind of violation.

Not a good look.. he's young.. both young and old do stupid things on social media. should not get the "death penalty" over a post like that.
