Anyone Listening to KSR Right Now? Hagans and Cal Fight?

Easier to blame others then to take responsibility or accept reality. Film doesn't lie. Family and friends do. People who think they know the game on social media do. People who think you aren't being used correctly do. For all the criticism Cal gets -and some is more then fair/true--he has done well by getting guys into the NBA and they perform at a level that shows he knows what he's doing in that aspect.

My red flag with Hagans is that he is mentally soft and can't take criticism. If you come to UK and to play for Cal, you better be able to hear that you sucked in a game or you might as well go somewhere else. The spotlight is like an NBA team and they push you hard. But he's the lone guy who never can get called out or ripped for playing like ****. Then his Dad cries and whines about things in an article with Ben Roberts? Adversity reveals whether you have character or are a character. UK promoted the crap out of him and has protected him. He responds with the crap we're hearing from calling out his HC, to allegedly getting into it with the S&C Coach? The stuff with Richards is just a bad look but happens--but you do it on night the other stuff gets leaked out, team falls apart, it's bad look.

And for the Hagans family/defenders, he's already on record saying he couldn't get "up" for an Elite 8 game with trip to Final Four on the line. So he's got some soft attributes that have shown and he's openly admitted. His best version is to be tough/lead and fight. He pouted, cried/whined and played like a soft ass *****. Get into the gym, and work on your game if you want to be praised.
I gotta wonder why he is at UK? These issues didn't just develop overnight. Someone at UK missed some red flags with this kid. Not overly physically gifted, poor shooter and now apparently he is a headcase? That's a lot to miss.

I've never felt the same about him after he admitted that after the Auburn loss

I still can’t believe his dad said he probably needed some rest because he was beat up this season. So is every other division 1 player. Man the heck up.

Says a lot doesn't it? When that is person in your ear......well let's just say nothing surprises me. Hell my friend calls him "Tony" and I'll leave it at that. He doesn't trust him or like him as a PG but when word gets out about this....oh boy. This is going to be something he better fix in a hurry or he's done. Not referring to UK But nobody will touch guys who are ***holes when they can't play at a level that you can overlook it because of the impact on the game.

What did his dad say to Ben Roberts?

He’s here because we struck out on our other recruiting targets. We had him reclassify to fill a void.

I think Cal is the best person to deal with the situation and bring this team together.Ashton doesn't seem like a bad guy but just frustrated at his struggles and lashed out at the wrong people.I hope he knows he made mistakes and gets it together.

What did his dad say to Ben Roberts?

Maybe it was Kyle Tucker. Hagans had some propaganda angle that blamed everyone but the fact the guy was turning the ball over and not playing well.

Can't believe what UK fans say about his son so he stopped going to games......they are just "kids"........and my favorite he talked of how he's playing through a litany of things.....without mentioning what they are or the fact everyone in CBB who has played significant role is banged up this time of year.

I'll say one thing-that game against UF where he might have sat--when the team got off to a great start-he made sure to get the warm ups off in a hurry. So it's up to the player. Cal's had guys sit and not like he forces anyone to play--especially if they are injured to a point they shouldn't.

Excuses are like ass****s, everyone has one and they all stink.

Wow. I didn’t see those comments. Does your friend call Hagans or Hagans dad Tony? And why? The only Tony I can think of is Tony Montana, Tony Soprano, and Tony the Tiger lol

I now but, I am saying
"Is he worth it?".
If he is a cancer and a millstone around the neck, is that a net positive?

Everybody deserves a second chance. This is the first I’ve heard of something like this with him and he hasn’t been in any other sort of trouble during his time here. Does his ass deserve to sit and do some soul searching? Yes. Does Cal need to have a heart to heart and let him know what he expects out of his PG from here til the end of the season? Absolutely. Does he deserve to be kicked off the team and people wishing he leaves no matter what? I don’t think so.

Nope. IF you have a bad night and cause UK to struggle...apparently you are a bad person and bad kid.

IF the comments by AH and Cal are verbatim then it seems to me just a heat of the moment thing and no big deal. I would guess that it’s not the first “lip” from Hagans and that Cal is OK with it.

And Hagans knows it’s Cal’s way or the highway so he went back in.

More concerned about Hagans thinking he needs to “be the man more” for his NBA future, which imo is not very bright. He’s a developing 4 year college PG, slow-developing at that.

Have to agree with this. He isn’t the first and won’t be the last in the Cal era that starts going rogue and playing “me ball” as the season winds down. Dude is forcing everything.

I'm just not feeling the outrage like some are.Clearly Hagans was in the wrong and Cal let him know either do what I say or go to the locker room and don't play at all.Ashton went right back in.Seemed to be a heat of the moment thing and I can remember a list of Cal players who jawed back and forth with him and he dealt with it fine.

Uh, im not gonna tell you I've coached ball before, but this sounds like a little more than just some firey coach player banter. Refusing to go in the game isnt that. At least to me.

But he did go right back in when Cal was firm with him.

Well, this loss was eerily similar to the Georgia home loss debacle on Senior Night under BCG in 2009 and we all know that team had serious issues and turmoil. Florida is going to kick our ass Saturday. Hearing this news and going into the SEC Tournament reeling is really bad and it just sucks. If this is true (and I don't doubt that it is), I don't know what the hell should be done about it or if there's anything that can be done about it right now. Ashton Hagans needs to look at himself in the mirror and man the **** up. I'll be shocked if he's a Wildcat next season.

I have felt for a long time that Ashton “thinks” he’s a lot better than he really is. Awesome defensive player most of the time but his jump-shot and decision making are suspect most of the time. There are times that you can see it coming that he’s gonna drive the lane no matter who is in front of him, and tries to split two or three defenders, usually ending up in a charge or getting stripped.

I told my dad on Sunday I think Hagans problem has been the emergence of Quickley. It makes sense when he started struggling and now all the more selfish acts that are coming out. Not a good look at all for him right now.
Hagans tries getting the ball to IQ to a fault. If he were jealous that wouldn't be the case.

I believe people are extremely hard on Hagans. He's not perfect but neither is the team. We are night and day better with him playing exactly like he's playing now

Doesn't all of our guards do this? Of course they do. With a stagnant offense late in the shot clock it's all on Hagans to create. That's why people put most of the blame on him.
Our offense is not smooth. Even when we have looked pretty good it isn't

I have a very big problem with it. In the moment or not, you don’t mouth back like that to the coach. Period. Now, after the game? You and coach can talk it out.

But it’s kinda like being pulled over. You don’t hold court with the cop on the street; you can maybe talk with the officer or give a small gripe, but at the end of the transaction he’s in charge. You don’t mouth like that and expect to gain ground. Same here. Hagans should’ve said “yes sir” or say “hey coach, I’m not feeling it tonight. Let one of my teammates have a go.”

Arguing with your “boss” so to speak will get you nowhere.

Now, if Cal has fostered that, that’s on Cal- but I sure as heck don’t like it.

Anybidy with eyes and half a brain can see Hagans is an issue right now. I like the kid. And he’s done some good things- but he’s consistent as dog with ADHD sniffing for truffles in a squirrel sanctuary. THAT’S why his draft stock is plummeting. Not because he’s a bad player or he’s not good enough. He’s just not consistent. He will have a great steal or defensive play only to drive into three people and force a TO.

1 + -1 = 0

And that formula PERFECTLY describes Ashton Hagans right now.

Well sure, at the end of the shot clock he’s gotta do what he has to, there’s no time to do anything else. I’m talking about when he does it early in the possession. First possession of the second half tonight was a prime example. It just seems to me that sometimes he appears to be intent that he’s gonna shoot on that possession no matter what. In the tournament those bad decisions and empty possessions will get you sent home. Ashton is our point guard, the quarterback, and his decision making is more important because he has the ball more than anybody else.

Oh lord. Now it's being reported that Ashton got into it with the strength coach.

Never get into it with the strength coach.

Well his name was on the agency list that got raided by the fbi... the one connected to adidas.... and do we trust adidas or that agency? no...... I would of said trust hagans....... but after this.. I dont know.

But even then....... I bet it has more to do with him feeling pressure to get to the NBA and forcing things and being frustrated............... its just after this spat... it makes me wonder. thats all

I am no rocket scientist but if you were point shaving I don't think you'd want to be sitting on the bench the last 3 minutes of the game.

Can't believe I am responding to this crap.

This is the kind of stuff that doesn't need to be on this board.

If all this is true, I don't like it at all, especially going into the post season. Hopefully, Hagans gets his act together for the benefit of the team.

I want to say I’m shocked we have some here acting like this back and forth between Cal and Hagans is “just heat of the moment back and forth stuff” and no big deal. This IS a big deal if what’s being reported is true. You have a guy who has not been playing well and Cal has been handling him with kid gloves for a month and a half it seems, and even with all that Ashton refuses to go into the game when he gets sat down for a bit? Great teammate dude. GREAT teammate. Exactly the kind of leadership we need from our 2nd year point guard.

You get to choose who you recruit. Coaching young guys isn't that bad, I coach HS and the only thing that has changed is you need to explain the "why" in terms of what we're doing and how we are wanting them to play. But they take getting cussed out as long as you also praise them when they do well, so like anyone they appreciate fairness.

No excuse for major issues in college program like UK--you get to select who you recruit and play. If it's an issue, move onto the next one or recruit over them and send them packing. I laugh at the sensitive guys in college though--what the hell do they think would happen in NBA if they played as poorly as some are? Think fans are going to be "nice". At least in Rupp they don't boo your ass off the court or call you trash...but you have to be good enough to get to NBA to experience that and this dude is nowhere near an NBA player. The **** coming out after this game is a bad look for a guy who has to be about things that aren't stats--leadership/toughness, unselfishness, and instead he's got in his feelings and acted like a spoiled brat.
Gotta defend Cal on this one. SO far Cal has recruited great young men and managed to get them to control what attitude they may have, and they all seem respectful and good young men that stay out of trouble. I thought Andrew Harrison was mentally weak, he pouted a bunch of times when he made mistakes, just like Hagans now. You are bound to get ahead case ever now and then. You never know till they get here and get in bad situations. So, I am not faulting Cal for recruiting Hagans, but I dont think coddling him is helpful either.
