Anyone Here Have An Electric Car?

Oh, it's more than just limits on charging EVs. These "progressives" are showing us how it's done in a socialist state...

“The top three conservation actions are to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles, and turn off unnecessary lights,” according to the American Public Power Association. During a “Flex Alert,” residents are encouraged to reduce energy consumption from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm — the hours in which “demand for electricity remains high and there is less solar energy available.”

When I lived in San Diego back before 1995, they asked us to save our bath water and use it to flush the toilet.

Having a bathtub drain plumbed to a toilet tank would be fun to see. I guess the tub has to be above the tank.

I think the idea was to bail the dirty water from the tub into the toilet. More motivated people could pump it into a storage barrel, I guess. I don't remember the details. I lived in an apartment back then and saw it as a hell of a mess effing with that dirty water and didn't bother.

This problem is what you get when you build massive cities in a natural desert. If they didn't have man-made canals bringing in water from afar, they couldn't begin to support the enormous population, and it has been over capacity for successfully doing that for many years. Of course it is all blamed on climate change, which is bullshit.

Unless we embrace nuclear power again in this country we won't see widespread electric vehicle usage. If we would embrace nuclear it would be a great move for the country. Lowers our dependence on foreign oil, much cleaner, etc... but he libs would never allow that. Nor would the lib nimby's.

Electric vehicles should be an option. Not a requirement. Some people really do not belong in the West. And really do not belong governing in the West.

Why do people keep posting these things? This is for a twelve-year-old Chevy Volt. It is 1) a plug-in hybrid not an EV. It runs on gas just like a Prius, and 2) a car that was early in the battery technology cycle. The reason the battery is expensive is because they stopped making the part years ago. They didn't sell many of them and batteries are in short supply and hard to find. This is basically a "go away" quote because Chevy is holding onto their batteries for warranty work. An independent shop that works on Hybrids would probably replace it with a refurbished battery for about $7-8 grand. A quick search on youtube will find videos of people replacing and/or repairing these batteries themselves.

Electric cars (there really IS no such thing, as I've said before), ironically, have a larger carbon footprint than a car that runs on an internal combustion engine. So, drive a battery car if you want to, just don't go around running your mouth about doing it for the environment. Because you're actually making it worse. LOL

According to MIT, even the dirtiest battery powered vehicle is cleaner than an Internal Combustion engine. And since the technologies for producing batteries and for generating energy continue to improve, that gap is going to continue to grow.

Batteries produce electricity. EV's run off electricity. I didn't buy mine to go green. I bought mine mainely for less maintenance and convenience of charging at home.

I’m just thinking about me getting ready to go to work and my wife drove the car yesterday and forgot to plug it in so now I have to charge it for 45mins to get to work. The whole “coolness” of an EV is fading fast. Seems like a hybrid would be much better.

Hybrids are fine. If that is what you want then go for it. But let's take a look at this question. How far away is work? If my wife brought my car back on empty I am going to have to go find a gas station and fill up. That is probably going to add at least an extra 15 minutes to my trip. Depending on how far away work is I could just charge for 15 minutes at home and get enough juice to get to and from work.

There are going to be pros and cons to every system. The failure in that scenario wasn't the car, it was the person who didn't charge it.

I am buying one next year. Have garage to set up home charging. Probably never use a charge stations. 2.6 mile commute all city from Bellevue to Downtown Cincinnati 22 stop lights. My current gas car sucks at. $7500 tax credit available in 2023 motivator to replace current 45K car that likely has plenty of life left. And geek out on the tech and Regenerative braking etc. To me if you live in city and able to charge at home it is a no brainer.

The problem I see is people want instant gratification. They want electric cars now to be infinitely better than gas powered cars. And to them, if they're not, they never will be. They fail to see the improvements over the years, that technology changes and things, like batteries, get cheaper and more efficient to produce. This thing about it being bad for the environment is a worn out, debunked talking point.

I, like most People, fear change. I was afraid to buy electric 10 years ago. I wasn’t 2 years ago. My E car is the best car I’ve ever driven in every way, except traveling over 400 miles. Still not a big deal, but you’ll have to recharge for 45 minutes while u get lunch. I drive 400 miles 6 times a year.

Pros-

-never waste time at a gas station (500 minutes a year)
-smoke any car on the road
-save time in traffic hitting 60 in 3 seconds
-hear your music more efficiently
-never get an oil change (4 hours a year)
-drives better than a beamer, Lexus, vette, truck, whatever

Did you have a charger installed in your garage? How much for that? And what do you do if you move?

Yes, it’s a 220 outlet in the carport. Same as a washer/dryer outlet. It’s very easy. Cost is around 500 bucks.

what would I do if I move?

If you move, do you have to move the charger? just trying to figure the extra charges.

My bad, I thought you had to buy a special fast charging unit?
You can get the Tesla fast charger for 500 bucks. Probably worth it, but not necessary. Fast charger-charges at 55-60 miles per hour

220 outlet charges at 24-30 miles an hour.

I went out to pick up a pizza this evening. While stopped at a red light, a black Tesla (no idea what model) was to my left. When the light turned green, it came out of the hole like a Sox & Martin Pro Stock, except the front wheels didn't leave the ground and it was gone out of sight when I turned into my destination about 100 yards past the redlight. I've never seen anything come out of the hole that quick that wasn't at a dragstrip. BTW, bonus points to anyone who has ever heard of Ronnie Sox & Buddy Martin.

Jd-you won’t believe how quick they are until you get in one. It’s uncomfortably numbing at first

Have you seen any of the Tesla vs videos on YouTube? They beat pretty much anything off the line. They're interesting to watch.

I'm not completely sold on the technology. I simply don't need a lot of it, so I'm several years away despite living in the city. But I also acknowledge that the one device that puts the most carbon into the atmosphere is the internal combustion engine. For me, my 4 cylinder is clean enough for now.

No points for me but I'll give you Don Prudhomme, Tom McEwen and Hot Wheels.
