2024 National Signing Day Thread

IMO, that's the death knell of college football. Just go out and buy a team every year. Without any changes to the current system, we may be looking at MLB as the Yankees/Dodgers/large market teams spend large sums of money and almost always are in the hunt (they don't win it every year, of course). So, we'll have 15 programs that spend, spend, spend and mostly end up in the CFP every year while most other programs are minor league feeder teams. Whoopee! Can hardly wait for that.

Ohio State spent 20M on this team according to an article on ESPN. Still lost to Michigan and I guess is out of the playoffs. That's mind boggling. I have no idea where the money comes from nor why.

Must be some kinda tit for tat thing where the university somehow directs business back to the donor. Don't see how anyone can justify it otherwise.

Crazy money being thrown around the last couple of days. Anyone able to hold a class together is way ahead of the game. UF is offering big money for anyone who will answer their phone, Fsu offering a RB 1m a year, Mich still spending huge money.

Pretty sure thats why Quise signed with Missouri

I don't disagree with you at all. UF got their cash collected to fire Billy and UF started to play better, they decided to keep him and spend the 26m+ on this class. They been flipping kids for 2 weeks, 4-5 kids from FSU alone, come after one of UGA QB commits yesterday. Been after everyone willing to talk.

Billy can coach and will be a player next year trying to get a 12th position in the playoffs.

They've got the money to spend. Hope they have "Old" Al Davis type success with that.

Folks, I don't think teams spending large sums of money is going to have the lopsided affected most think it will at first glance.

Even if it does, what change does that bring to CFB? Bama, Mich, UGA, Florida, OSU along with the other handful of top tier teams have always been the top tier teams. So basically, it's status quo.

Those programs have always spent insane amounts of money to attract and hoard talent, but instead of players getting some they spent it all on stadiums, facilities, support staff, private chefs, nutritionists, chiropractors, massage therapists, etc...

We got ASU, ISU, BYU, Boise St, SMU, IU...all sniffing conference titles and playoffs.

We got South Carolina, Missouri, Ole Miss, AnM, all making noise in the SEC and pretty close to sniffing title game and play offs. Mizz and Aggies are historically middling B12 programs. SC and Ole Miss don't have any more money than we do, probably less.

Top tier programs will maintain top of their depth chart with money. Again, that's not a change. They were going to get those guys in any era of football with any rules or lack thereof.

What they're not doing any more, and it's already obvious, is hoarding excess talent and burying it down the depth chart and with redshirts.

So yes, big boys can spend big money on the top layer. However, kids who traditionally would sit for years and maybe even spend their careers as backups/role players/special teams are spreading out to go get some cash.

Then there's the portal. All it has done is speed up the ability for kids to move around and get some money as well as playing time.

Again, in past eras, big dogs were able to hoard talent because of the aforementioned reasons but also because talent couldn't move around as easily.

So, a kid would commit to a big dog. Alabama or UGA is way more attractive than UK or SC. The pitch worked. Now said kid gets redshirted because he obviously can't play right away over the guys in front of him. Year two goes by maybe he played some special teams. Year 3 he's number 2 or 3 still. Got buried. Recruited over and/or guys in his class just ended up being a bit better.

Has been historically hard for all those types of kids to move as soon as it becomes clear they're not going to get the run they thought they were. Now, shoot, a freshman can play and get paid. Or if after a year he reads the tea leaves and decides to move on he can. Doesn't have to wait to graduate, and/or meet other specific criteria, in order to be able to move.

FSU has offered one of UGA's RB commits 1m a year. Coach is desperate, but don't see how a RB is your answer when your OL sucks. They offered your Wallace kids brother 800k as a LB, But he stuck with Arky.
Yea. The nfl figured this out years ago. Don't waste money on first round rb pick when you can get a quality OL in the first and then get more yards with a 2nd or 3rd round RB pick.

It'll help the middle and hurt the bottom. You're right that the rich are already rich. Teams like us and Scar can fill gaps that we never could before through recruiting. Teams outside of p5 who aren't winning at a high rate will find it impossible to keep really good talent.

That's exactly where the change is. The status quo was getting chipped away at gradually until the money came in. Kentucky had 2 10 win seasons after the early signing day and transfer portal got started. Then the money tilted it back in favor of the (always) big spenders.

Michigan bought a title and got Harbaugh a new NFLA gig just in time after a long period of suck.

OSU has bought their way onto the cusp of a playoff.

Its only a matter of time before USCal and others get back in the mix due to money.

If you're not spending top dollar for OL it doesn't matter what you have behind it in terms of titles. I can't think of a team whose OL sucked but had great QB, WRs, and RBs that won a title. Just doesn't happen or is an absolute rarity in the NFL.

All starts with the OL. We need to take a page from that book and go get some great OL. HS and portal. Open that checkbook for some great prospects and find them an incredible coach.

Not running the ball this year WHEN WE CLEARLY SHOULD HAVE really cost us this class. Couldn't have chosen a worse time to double down on ego
Well, when UK did choose to run, they ran right at "immovable" players and tried to outrun speed defenders. Makes no sense.

Gotta play Moneyball, IMO. The big boys are going to spend like crazy to get pass blocking OL. We should be just looking for road graters.

Some high schools openly recruit. Of course that didn't help Boyle County this year. I loved it, though, what a bunch of arrogant jerkweeds.
My former softball team beat them in the elite 8 three years ago .. after they attempted to intimidate us in UKs warm up facility . Was a sweet win for sure .
