May Day transfer portal observations

The spring transfer portal is closing, so it is likely that our spring roster attrition may be complete now. As of this morning, Coach Stoops had filled 82 scholarships on our 2024 roster. So three more 2024 scholarships are still open. Transfers already posted in the portal can declare a decision when they wish.

Here are some players in the spring portal who UK's coaches unsuccessfully recruited when they were hs seniors. This is not intended to be all inclusive, but some of these names are interesting. (Some aren't.)

Cristian Conyers, DB (TN)
Jonathon Denis, OL (Miami)
Andrew Dennis, OL (IL)
Jason Essex, WR (IA St)
Nigel Glover, LB (OH St)
Amir Herring, OL (MI)
Jaylen Johnson, DB (Memphis)
Tony Mitchell, DB (AL)
Koy Moore, WR (Auburn)
Davon Townley, DL (PA St)
Gavin Wimsatt, QB (Rutgers)
Tommy Winton, WR (E TN St)

I can't see Stoops being interested in most of these players now. But he was interested when they were in hs, so you never know. Dennis, Essex, Herring, Mitchell, or Moore might get UK's interest.

Basketball Clip 3. BYU at Kansas (6/23)

This was BYU's first Zoom look of the night. They actually run four players in the action with three off the ball on the left side of the floor, and Aly Khalifa handling at the top. Trevin Knell is the first cutter. He comes off a pair of screens from the corner, but instead of coming for the handoff he short curls to the lane off the second screen. This is because Kansas is switching every screen, and they have a defender waiting on the top side of the second screen. Before he gets to that player Knell curls. That defender should have stayed with him, but he stays instead. Knell is wide open under the basket. #15 Richie Saunders was the first screener. Now he is the second cutter. When he comes off a screen he is picked up by two men. Kansas is lost, and they know it. Johnny Furphy scrambles back into the lane to find Knell. #25 Nicolas Timberlake should have gone with Dallin Hall because he is the only defender left, but for some reason he drops into the lane and covers nobody. Hall is wide open for the pitch into a three-pointer. All of the movement without the ball totally confused all of the automatic Kansas switching on this possession. But the short curl by Knell against the switch put the Jayhawks on skates right off the bat.

FB Recruiting Two guys considering UK and Mizzou

UK has been zeroed in on Brody Lennon, TE from Ohio, for a long time. Really good athlete, pass catching prospect.

He visited Mizzou over the weekend. Kentucky has liked Lennon for a while and I have felt like they have a great shot. However I can tell you that Mizzou and Penn State also have some confidence. I think it's tough to tell how that one is going to play out. He does visit UK this weekend so as long as he doesn't commit to another school before then they still have a very real chance at worst and maybe better.

The other kid considering both UK and Mizzou is Shaun Terry, the receiver from Ironton who recently decommitted from Notre Dame.

I have never heard that UK is the leader for Terry. I did hear today that Mizzou seems to be in a strong position. Not saying he goes there but I know interest in Mizzou seems to be high.

Matt Jones regarding the NIL at UK.

I saw he tweeted out that if it hadn't been for a handful of bigtime boosters stepping up to fill the gap that UK's roster would be severely hurt. He also said that isn't sustainable long term and UK Athletics and it's partnership with JMI has to change or UK sports will fall behind. What about our contract with JMI is causing the problems and is there no way out of the contract or is Mitch just not trying to get out of it? I know we have been retroactive when it comes to NIL from the beginning.
