Zion to Duke

Would Coach Antigua sealed this deal had he been here? Recruiting has not been the same since he left..

I’m not saying the Duke degree isn’t valuable.

I’m saying it’s irrelevant if you are a basketball player who is well connected.

Those guys get the opportunities they want because they are basketball players.

If they keep their nose clean and get their degree, there are oodles of people willing to help them out. That’s true whether the degree is from UK, Duke, UCLA, etc.

Being a famous basketball player trumps where the actual degree comes from.

Who has the larger alumni base? UK or Duke?

The answer to that question explains why the UK degree carries significant value for the UK basketball player and they can carry that degree anywhere they want to go.

Your holding up New York as if it’s some impenetrable palace and a Duke degree means more. And, I’m saying, not if you played basketball for UK. There are plenty of connected people in New York who would jump at the opportunity to help out a UK basketball player.

I am from the middle of nowhere Kentucky. My parents were nobodies who came from nothing.

I graduated from UK. I work in DC and spend much of my time in Manahattan. Most would consider my job a very good one.

If I wanted to be in New York, all I have to do is wag a finger and it’s done.

I’m no one.

Now, imagine if I was a UK basketball alum?

Ha. Go down to wall street and ask anyone you see whether a Duke or a UK degree is more valuable. Ny-NjJ connections with Duke are well known. Not sure why you'd argue that.

That’s not what I am arguing. The Duke degree, in and of itself, is more valuable than the UK degree.

But the UK degree held by the UK basketball player carries significantly more weight than the typical UK degree.

It’s as if you think there aren’t people on Wall Street who are UK alumns.

And that, frankly, is ignorant.

Wait are some of you arguing about degrees? We are talking about superstars, millionaires..these top guys could give two shits about a degree

And continuing with your anecdotal ststement...there are UofL grads and Murray grads and OkSt grads on wall st too. Their boss however went to Duke.

Exactly.

But if these superstars happen to need to fall back on their education, their contacts are much more valuable than where their degree is from.

So what?

Do you think Zion Williamson is going to be the boss on Wall Street?

All he needs is a hook-up.

Sounds like you have fallen for the Krzyzewski sales pitch.

The 1 or 2 kid in the class does not need Cal or K to get them into the league as a lottery pick. If I am going to spend one year in college and do not have the family tie to UK..or being a Kentucky fan....it makes sense to go to Duke.

If your focus is one year, then the caliber of education is pretty irrelevant. In fact, talk to co-eds who go to Duke, and they will tell you stories of illiterate basketball players, etc.

Now, if you are bright, but doubt you will actually play in the NBA, and you are preparing for a career as a hedge fund manager, then sure, go to Duke. It’s the smart thing to do.

But for most of these kids - it’s going to be their name recognition, not the perceived quality of their degree, that is going to carry them.

In fact, what is most likely for those whose basketball careers don’t go as planned or desired, is doing something near where their school is located, in a primo job, set up by an alumn.

And that is where being a UK basketball player carries immense weight. We have a massive, dedicated fan base eager to help out a “celebrity.”

Some kid who goes to Duke and gets a 2.6 may get a job on Wall Street, but at some point, brains have to kick in. If he doesn’t have them, he’s not destined to go very far.

That degree is not more valuable for him than the UK degree is for 4-year UK basketball player who is well known.

What are you smoking they wil kill us

Duke’s hype will be greater than their quality as a team. They will be an amazingly talented but young team who will struggle on the defensive end of the floor. They will probably struggle early and either drop a few games that they shouldn’t or look suspect in their wins like they did much of this year. In conference play they will win a bunch of games but probably drop one to UNC and then lose on the road to someone like Boston college, Pitt, nc state, or Georgia Tech. Whichever one of those scrubs ends up being their first true conference road game. Come tourney time they will get a high seed, make it to the second weekend and either choke it away or advance to the final 4.

The main point that I am trying to make is that they aren’t going to be like the golden state warriors where it is a given that they will win it all. Their regular season and conference run, as well as their lack of D, will be similar to what we are seeing with Bagley and co’s team this year and then come March they will be one of about 10 teams who have a legit shot at winning it all. I would be surprised if UK wasn’t in that group of 10 as well.
