What qualifications/accomplishments should they have to be a qualified candidate?

Whose coaching tree should (‘nt) they be from?

Step 1. Get rid of current coach.
Step 2. Give job to best available coach.
Step 3. Move on from JVC.

Mine is same as always. A coach who puts the success of the program first and foremost by a long shot and is motivated to do whatever it takes (within the rules of course) toward that end. Someone who wants to win every game and does everything necessary to win them. Give me that and I'm happy and invested - even if the results aren't significantly better than they are now.

Demonstrated success an alot of hunger.

My choice is Chris Beard.

Ifctaking a flyer on potential then Golden or Wade

I do Ask Donovan an Vogel first but likely neither is a chance.

The best of the best.

Here’s my issue with us fans, including myself. Just one year ago, every realistic coaching list on this board contained Nate Oats, Chris Holtman, and Eric Musselman. Oats had the best team in the country last year and completely choked. Holtman just got fired from Ohio St. Musselman had one of the worst teams in the SEC this year. One year later and nobody wants any of these three and now we all pretend they were never desired.

The very night we lost, hundreds and hundreds of people on here were ready to give Bruce Pearl a blank check until a few hours later he chokes after we did. Now nobody is mentioning him now either.

People keep saying that this guy or that guy can’t be any worse than Cal. We shouldn’t want a lateral move. Every men’s basketball hire this school makes should be well thought out and planned so it’s a home run hire.

And one more thing, I’m sure this postseason caught Mitch off guard. We had a ton of ups and downs this year but the potential was there like we haven’t had since 2017. I really believe this year caught him off guard and he’s likely still stunned at how it went down.

A non-salesman, non-sharpie. Tubby and Sutton were my ideas of what a coach was. Someone who has a life outside of hoops, who even resents the demands and says "no" to all the clubs and speechifying. The guys who live and breathe hoops freak me out. Even Rupp had a life outside of basketball -- he had a farm that he ran.

One thing we forget, being #1 happens to teams.......not very much unless you look at Rupp's era or an early UCLA.

We are probably extremely lucky to win a championship with calipari.

Not many coaches get that opportunity, even the great coaches might get there once or twice in a career.

we lost to a team that probably has not won in the tourney ever before unless you say they beat a 16 seed to open the tourney.

Oakland deserves to win a little don't you think? If you believe in balance, yin and yang, etc....

I have watched this board for years today I’d like to post as a fan. Leaders that fail, have one primary flaw… they believe the way they have always succeeded, will always work.

My mind has changed over and over since the Thursday first round loss.

Cal’s primary flaw is he puts the players over the program. It made sense to me when we were winning, great players that succeed brings the program along with them. Ok… I guess.

Problem is, the “players” and the game has changed… it’s older. Talent over experience used to matter and that’s how I would always hire people. The game today is different. Couple that with the name on the jersey and a coach that screams at them non-stop, pulls them for the slightest error, and leans into getting them into the game (when the should be on the bench) just to get them into the NBA.

I have zero doubt he cares deeply for his players, but the Kentucky brand comes with immense pressure to perform, 18 year old kids vs 24 year olds, and a coach that still thinks “Bigs” matter as much as they did 8 years ago.

It’s the “Lone Wolf” syndrome Look up that definition, that’s his relationship to the Kentucky “business”. In Business, the Wolf is fine as long as they perform. When they don’t, managers/AD can be quick to move on them.

So… right or wrong, my personal opinion is that the AD needs to have a hard conversation, lay out his expectations beyond just winning (obvious), Cal needs to be put on a “Performance Plan“ that focuses on the small stuff. If you can’t execute on the small stuff (TBD), then the big stuff (winning) stands zero chance.

As AD, I bring him back for one more run. If the small stuff changes the big stuff changes (winning), it’s a win win. Fact: we need more time to secure a coach. There are none out there imo currently. Mitch needs time to find one that can give use a good run.

My opinion, just sharing it for what it’s worth.

The problem is there isn't one. People keep thinking there's a Cal circa 2009 out there if we just look hard enough and there's not.
I know there’s not and that’s what I’m saying. I don’t agree with hardly anything Matt Jones says anymore but I heard him in an interview since we lost and he was asked who he wanted and his two were Brad Stevens and Jay Wright. Neither are coming here!

He also said he did not want Scott Drew and I happen to agree.

A coach that can coach the talent he has; Kentucky will always attract some talent.
I don't care if he has the personality of a rock.

My list:
1. Good recruiter and really knows how to navigate the portal.
2. All in on NIL.
3. Fun style of play.
4. Around 50 or younger.
5. Most important, all in on winning. Puts the university and the name on the fount first.

For me this is every thing Nate Oats is. I really like Todd Golden but he might be to young right now.

Nice post but what is the small stuff? Am genuinely curious

I want someone that cares about winning games for Kentucky and not hearing about the NBA crap all of the time. A coach that doesn't cater to the NBA scouts and GM's with the pre-season pro day so the players can get feedback about leaving Kentucky within 6 months. This program has become a pitstop for the NBA and it's Cal's fault. If Cal loves the NBA so much maybe he can get another job in the NBA and not get fired this time. I want someone who understands that Kentucky basketball is a way of life.

Cal is 65 and his last several years have not been up to par with his previous coaching and this year his lineup decisions seemed like early Alzheimers(I'm not making fun of that; it runs in my family and I took care of my Mom). He isn't going to turn things around and giving him another year is just putting us another year away from being a contender.

I get it… my perspective is based on someone that wants His legacy intact. It’s also very-much based on giving Mitch time to find a good Coach. I’d prefer to basically give Cal one more year, on a “performance Plan” and let it be know that Mitch is looking for his replacement behind the scenes.

Uptempo offense, full court press, trapping defense. Great in game adjustments. Continue to recruit high ranking players but supplement those with 4 year players that want to be here. Always take the few very best recruits from our state even if they aren’t 5 stars.
Damn sounds like someone I know

Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt. Brad Stevens. Jay Wright. Dan Hurley. Greg McDermott.

Humility. Understands human nature. A man's man. Speaks softly but carries a big stick ala Teddy Roosevelt. A leader and teacher in all things but doesn't stray too far from the ultimate goal: 100% focused on WINNING GAMES. Not a braggart or blowhard. Treats the CEO and custodian the same. Not a buddy to the players...more Adolph Rupp than their friend and invitee for dinner. An assassin who knows this is war (Saban). No-nonsense. High energy.

We do not need to "knee-jerk" ourselves into a situation where we hire the flavor of the month or even week. We all have ideas who might be a fit...if Calipari leaves, we should examine our choices very carefully to ensure the "great fit" as opposed to "good fit."

No Bruce Pearl. No Todd Golden--yet. No Greg Kampe. No Kenny Payne. No assistant on our staff. No Mark Pope--yet. Maybe Beard at Ole Miss. Maybe Williams at TAM. Maybe Shaka Smart. Maybe Billy Donovan. Maybe Scott Drew. Maybe even Rick Pitino to breath life into us a second time. Maybe Fred Hoiberg.

One who puts Kentucky first instead of the NBA.
Values experienced players and will retain them at least 3 years.
A previous Final 4 run would be nice but a young coach that has won big at a small school winning their conference and been to the Tournament is a minimum requirement.
Is hungry and motivated to win. I don't want a coach with a foot already in retirements door.
Be an excellent Xs and Os in-game coach and don't employ as bunch of yes men on the coaching staff.
Bring an exciting style of play on offense and defense like Pitino's 90s teams.
Be a great recruiter that will get the talented freshmen and aggressive on the transfer portal.

That’s what needs to be discussed between Mitch and Cal. To me it’s, Kentucky first, interaction with the fans, self-awareness with the fans, weekly meeting with Mitch (or whatever MB wants), improve relations with boosters, yelling at players like he has been- reduction in anxiety/stress especially with Freshmen), call in show that asks serious questions, assistant coach’s that are tasked with dissent to challenge his decisions specifically- he has to defend- that’s this persons specific role, written recap after each game- what went wrong how to improve. This is typically what’s done in the Business World. The small stuff accountability. He has lost the right to do it his way. Now he has to defend his decisions. Hope that makes sense.

I nominate you to be included in these negotiations. Please proceed directly to UK without haste!

I am not being facetious.

1: Prioritizes College wins and maintaining/building the Kentucky historical standard

2: recruits to needs and strategy….not just go get the highest ranked and try to fit square pegs to round holes w a diff strategy/makeup yearly.

3: willing to adjust in game. Have multiple zones prepared if needed. Zone/man trap press early when needed instead of waiting for the final 2 min.

4:force the opposition to play your style instead of just trying to win with however the other team dictates they want to play.

5: Don’t have to be the fastest team in the nation; but upper 50% tempo. Preferably between 60-80 percentile.
