Your Criteria For A New Coach?

40-0 every year with spectacular offense, even more spectacular defense & rebounding. Plus a hot (10+) wife/girlfriend.
Let’s just hire the Grand Canyon Women’s Coach. It’ll make the season watchable no matter what

1. Identified as a man his whole life (unless you guys really want the Grand Canyon coach)
2. Good people skills
3. Genuine
4. Good recruiter
5. Knows the modern game but still believes in old school rebounding and defense

1 is the most important and the rest are not in a particular order

I don't know if there is a standard criteria.

Rupp was a high school coach who sat on the bench at KU.

Joe B was a good ole boy who might have played and was an assistant for Rupp but his record prior to UK was average at best.

Eddie Sutton was actually a pretty solid established coach in the SEC. Didn't work out here, but then he goes on to have a HOF career at OSU...

Pitino, okay at Boston U, not so hot at NY, 1 hot year at Providence...does what he did here...who knew?

Tubby, I think has the ideal resume. HC for 6 years, in the SS 3 of them, prior to UK. Clear his star was rising. If you can take Tulsa and UGA to the SS, you can coach.

Billy G, decent resume, kind of hot name at the time having made a little noise with Aggies and before that having essentially turned around and saved the UTep program very quickly...didn't work out here.

Cal probably the biggest name and best resume out of all of them. Lived up to it starting out. Yet here we are, going on a half-decade of not advancing, and full decade no FF sniffs.

Cal will be back and we will hear all kinds of stuff about how he’s “motivated”, “changing”, “ other coaches can’t handle pressure here”, “uk fans are dumb if they want him gone”….. shit like that

No Dogs on game night
All recruits start on other end of bench
AD's name doesn't have "fart" at the end of it.
Players required to wear thornbushes around the waist. They'll keep their hands up.

I have watched this board for years today I’d like to post as a fan. Leaders that fail, have one primary flaw… they believe the way they have always succeeded, will always work.

My mind has changed over and over since the Thursday first round loss.

Cal’s primary flaw is he puts the players over the program. It made sense to me when we were winning, great players that succeed brings the program along with them. Ok… I guess.

Problem is, the “players” and the game has changed… it’s older. Talent over experience used to matter and that’s how I would always hire people. The game today is different. Couple that with the name on the jersey and a coach that screams at them non-stop, pulls them for the slightest error, and leans into getting them into the game (when the should be on the bench) just to get them into the NBA.

I have zero doubt he cares deeply for his players, but the Kentucky brand comes with immense pressure to perform, 18 year old kids vs 24 year olds, and a coach that still thinks “Bigs” matter as much as they did 8 years ago.

It’s the “Lone Wolf” syndrome Look up that definition, that’s his relationship to the Kentucky “business”. In Business, the Wolf is fine as long as they perform. When they don’t, managers/AD can be quick to move on them.

So… right or wrong, my personal opinion is that the AD needs to have a hard conversation, lay out his expectations beyond just winning (obvious), Cal needs to be put on a “Performance Plan“ that focuses on the small stuff. If you can’t execute on the small stuff (TBD), then the big stuff (winning) stands zero chance.

As AD, I bring him back for one more run. If the small stuff changes the big stuff changes (winning), it’s a win win. Fact: we need more time to secure a coach. There are none out there imo currently. Mitch needs time to find one that can give use a good run.

My opinion, just sharing it for what it’s worth.
If you think it is possible to rehabilitate a 65 year old professional with an ego the size of Texas, your plan will work out just fine.

If not, you will have a 66 year old rehabilitation project that is totally unwilling to change or listen to anyone but his inner self.

When you are perfect ( in your own mind), there is no changes needed. Just dig in and prove everyone else wrong.

That is Cal.

1. Sex as on birth certificate.
2. No open sores over 35 mm x 35 mm.
3. Not John Vincent Calipari.

Cal won at UMass with 1 star and 4 hardworking journeymen.
He won at Memphis with 2 stars and 3 hardworking journeymen.
I think he believed more stars = more success.

I don't think basketball works well with more than 2 stars.

We can argue about who we like the best or what they need to have on a resume to be a good hire but the bottom line is this.

Well currently the lineup stubbornness and not really preparing much specifically for other the team’s scouting report is bad. Let’s not do those things next time.

First someone who can actually coach and make in game adjustments.
Second, someone who is on campus teaching the sport to his players.
Third, someone that can judge talent in the portal and in high school and get them on campus.
Four, someone that does not schedule way too many mid major games in the early season.
A coach that teaches the tradition that the players are representing.
More than a pulse, which we barely have now.
