*What a weird five games. UK could be 5-0. UK could be 0-5. Every single game has been in doubt with 3-4 minutes remaining.

*There's a ton to bitch about tonight, but once the emotion wears off, people will (might) appreciate what UK was able to do (to a certain extent anyway). Kentucky scored 21 straight points to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. Unfortunately, that won't erase the first 54 minutes from the memory bank.

*I think the tone was set early. Westry could have made it 7-0, but he dropped what would have been an easy pick six. UK was driving on their opening possession, but the Badet fumble at midfield ended that drive. Then after an Eastern turnover, Towles was picked on a deep ball. Too many mistakes early.

*The defense really struggled at times. Missed tackles. Probably half a dozen whiffs on potential sacks. Only 5 TFL. Just a very, very, tough performance to watch if you're a Big Blue fan. Mostly, I'm still stunned. EKU ranked 90th nationally in total offense. AT THE FCS LEVEL! This team was shutout and shutdown at NC State. Tonight, they completed 19-32 passes and ran for 180 yards. No way EKU should have put up four touchdowns and 363 total yards.

*Hats off to Cory Johnson. One man can't do everything by himself, but Johnson damn near did. He had half of UK's TFL and half of UK's sacks. Johnson had 8 tackles and 11 assists, insane numbers for an interior lineman. Flannigan and Forrest also had double digit tackles, but it seems like each had just as many whiffs.

*Towles did what Towles does...he mixed in some nice play with some awful play. I'm not saying Kentucky should change quarterbacks, but unless Towles opens the Auburn game on fire, I'd get Barker a series. Just see how he reacts. We have no idea what we'd get in Barker, but we know what we have in Towles. He's a 4th year junior with nearly 20 starts under his belt. He's a talented QB, but his inconsistency is beyond frustrating.

*Stoops did say he thought about replacing Towles tonight. I wonder if that might lead to Barker getting more practice reps with the long break until Auburn.

*Towles had his issues, but he wasn't alone. The OL continues to struggle. Just no consistency. You have to wonder how much that affects Towles. Then again, the UK QB misses on throws that are basically catch and throw. Shannon Dawson is lucky he has all of his hair, because he's gonna start yanking it out soon!

*Like the defense, I thought the offense had one real standout. Dorian Baker came up huge! The TD on the quick hitter in OT when he had to beat two guys to the goal line. The tough catch on the fade route in regulation with the game on the line. Just really big plays! Bone had a nice night as well.

*Offensively, I really wish UK would throw more quick stuff and run more screens. Anything to slow the pass rush down. I know Swindle was out tonight, but it isn't like he's a lockdown tackle.

*Austin MacGinnis should be back for Auburn. Missed him tonight.

*Cats have their third sellout and biggest crowd of the season (63,380). Apparently, about 20K spent the 2nd half in the concession line (LOL).

It isn't often when a win feels like a loss, but tonight kind of feels that way. Hats off to the Cats for manning up and coming back from a late 14-point deficit, but damn, how in the hell do you dig that kind of hole against EKU? Yeah, UK is young on offense. Sure, EKU seemed to have a lot more energy. Still frustrating, and really there's no excuse. This is what happens, however, when you let an inferior opponent hang around. UK is lucky the outcome was positive.

Bottom line, Auburn visits in 11 days...another likely sellout and UK's first THU night home game in school history. As the Auburn game gets closer, "how" UK beat the Colonels will matter less and less. At the end of the day, 4-1 is 4-1 no matter how you got there. Still, Stoops and staff have a lot to fix. Glad they have a little extra time to do it.

GBB!!!

Auburn may not be what most experts expected, but a win over them would sure look good on paper and put the Cats in a nice spot in the bowl hunt.

Absolutely Smashcat.

Auburn had another rough go of it today. San Jose State's -4 TO ratio probably cost them a victory.

GBB!!!

Get ready to see the read option from the Tigers. We had the hardest time stopping the running back on that cutback run off of the QB read. Everyone in the stadium knew they were going to run that play on 1st and a lot on 2nd down and the Colonels still got 4-6 yards each time through 3 1/2 quarters.

Would love to know why we couldn't stop that play?

It all but clinches a bowl spot. Charlotte is pretty awful...I mean if you give up 70+ to MTSU your D is not great. MTSU has scored 10, 25, and 13 against the 3 power 5 teams they have played so not like they are a juggernaut on offense. So if UK beats AU to get its 5th win, a 6th is all but assured if they just SHOW UP AND PLAY HARD.

I really don't understand why we take so many chances on defense, it seems like every defensive play we have players blitzing from every direction. Most of the time we don't get to the qb and then we leave a hole that is take advantage of. Just play some solid defense at least half the time without all the blitzing.

Congratulations sir. You are the first person to ever ask why we blitz so much. And were not talking this year. This is in the history of the board. Been here since Guy Morris.I never thought I'd see the day.

Kentucky has had trouble playing solid straight-up defense, and that is why they have blitzed so much in the past. Maybe that will change in the future as the defense gets stronger.

The game might have been a sellout on paper, but noooooo waayyy on earth was that crowd bigger than the Florida crowd. Saw a ton of people out trying to sell tickets. I think a lot of the empty seats were season ticket holders who stayed home due to the weather. Students didn't even fill their space by a long shot.

I think I heard one of the announcers say the Auburn game is already sold out. Does anyone know if that is true?

Completely agree with Erik. Ugly game, but guys made plays to win the game, and a win is a win. Move on to the next...

Agree that they need to run plays that get the ball out of Towles hands quicker. He seems to be at his best when he doesn't have to read over the defense. Also puts less stress on the O-line.

In a week that we should of gotten up early and been able to rest starters and get young guys some snaps, we turned it into a dogfight and now need the bye week to get healthy. This is gonna cost us a game later in the year.

That's 2 games we were clearly more talented and we could of gotten some experience for some guys. Squandered opportunity.

Now the Charlotte game these guys need to take care of business. We Can't Have A MELTDOWN like last year. Staying fresh is the key and not having to fight 10 rounds when a first round ko is there for the taking.

I agree with you UKErik, "it felt like a loss". A very frustrating game to watch. I still can't get over how easily EKU ran through our defense. After the Mizzou game, I thought our defense was improving. Thank goodness for Johnson and Flannigan. Go Cats!!

UKErik, just another example of why you are one of the top posters on this website, on ANY forum.
Last night was beyond frustrating. Even infuriating. But I'm still with Stoops, this team, and the direction in which I think we are slowly headed.

Bottom line is we WON the game. Our' greatest college team ever assembled' Basketball team almost lost last year to COLUMBIA, that ivy league juggernaut, but managed to eek out a narrow win. Point being no one cared when we made it to the Final Four last March.
Same thing here, get to a Bowl game, and it looks just like USC and Mizzou a W in the win column !

How many times has UK outplayed a superior opponent only to lose at the end? Feels good it was finally our turn to be on the other end of that.

In past years, we often looked tired and gassed near the end of the game, especially on defense. This year it seems we save our best energy for the end of the game. We successfully ran out the clock against SC and Missou and successfully marched on the consecutive offensive drives for TDs at the end of the game and in OT last night...and the defense seemed strong at the END of the game. Partly conditioning and partly the quality of players and subs.

Auburn has shown a lot of poor QB play in the bits I've watched

I have a feeling their QB will look a lot better when he visits Lexy
UK just has a history of giving it up like that

Should be a good game -- very winnable and for some reason I see Auburn and UL in same 'grade' of difficulty and both as POTENTIAL WINS (should wins)

My early prediction:

Kentucky 27
Auburn 23

UK finds a way to get it done again - Boom comes up strong

Dawson crafted one of the worst game plans in the last 3 years, including all of the Neil Brown fiasco's. He has been woefully inconsistent so far, but last night was awful. Perhaps a big reason is he continually asks more of Towles than what he is capable of doing.

And not sure who called the high risk corner route, but Baker saved Towles and Dawson's butt with that catch.

This staff was outcoached last night by a wide margin. The players deserved better.

We are starting to see the makings of a respectable football program. Go Cats!!

I think it is ludicrous to even mention playing Barker. This obviously drives Stoops insane as well. Everyone PLEASE stop with this. We have a quarterback, and he's a damn good one at that. Support him!!

I would liked to have seen Barker get some in game reps in case he has to come in for an injury. EKU should had been an opportunity for him to get some experience.

High risk? Perfect throw and catch on that one. Baker is our best, most NFL ready WR and he's born to catch those endzone corner routes. I mean are you mad that it worked or what? You act like it was a crazy flea flicker or something.

I'm sure part of why Dawson's plan didn't work well is lack of execution. Or did you think we were sharp and executing well?

I think Towles tries to be too cautious throwing into tight windows in zone coverage... In doing so, he chokes the ball and is late/behind inccurately with every throw. When he's in a 4-minute or 2-minute drill his rhythm is better and the ball is zipped directly on his target.

The first half, our backs weren't picking up blitzes, our line was abused and we had receivers falling and dropping passes.

That said, we have some good pieces but we certainly aren't an elite team. We are still REBUILDING.

I'm glad the coaches have a Fellini film room of horrors to prep a read/option team in a week and a half. I agree with Wyvern. Stoops will have these guys' undivided attention, we will get healthy, get BOOM back and we pistolwhip Auburn.

UK 33
AU 17

After the game I kind of felt like the coaches were so intent on there not being a fight on the field we didn't fight on the field! Well not until 7:39 to go.

The point stands, but your revisionist history is a bit hazy on the actual game. UK was up double digits with 8 minutes to go and up 15 with 1min30 to go. That is in no way eeking a win out in basketball, so epitome of apples to oranges but I digress. The main thing is the point stands though as no one even remembered that game when UK annihilated UNC that very same week. You are exactly right that if/when (when for me) we get to 6+ wins and go to a bowl no one is going to care about how we won those 6+. We can win them all by 1 point or by 20+ points and it won't matter.

Exactly, I know they pulled away at the end, but Columbia gained confidence by hanging in there especially the 1st half. UK simply was looking ahead to UNC, which they handled rather easily. The EKU game will help players and coaches stay focused on the task at hand. Auburn will be plenty tough, make no mistake, and if we can pull out a win, the good season will continue to roll on. Enjoy the wins, because we have had many close losses over the years !

I also thought EKUs up tempo offense gave us alot of problems. Pretty smart coaching decision there. It really affected us when we couldn't sub guys in.

Another thought, how huge was that FG block Hunnegein(sp)? Didn't think much of it at the time but man that was a huge play in hindsight.

To put things in perspective eku only averaged 3.5 ypc. Tough game no energy but we have proven we can win every game left on the schedule. I hope towles has more tough games where he throws for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Thanks 3kidsandme. It sure felt like more than 3.5 ypc. Go Cats!!

Hate to admit it, but after that last EKU score, I couldn't stand it any longer and went to bed. In my defense I was watching the game on a lousy You Tube video. Started watching late and couldn't get back on Rivals to find the stream, really felt good to see the final score on TV when I got up.

If anyone is interested, there will be a replay of the game on the SEC network at 7:30 AM Monday. Got my DVR set.

Even though this was an incredibly tough game to watch for the first 3 and half quarters, this game will pay dividends going forward. Because of the success EKU had with different things offensively and defensively, we will be more prepared especially against Auburn! In fact, I believe we beat Auburn now because of the lessons learned!

Respectable is going to overtime against EKU?

I swear, some of you are certifiably insane to take a desperate OT win against EKU as a positive thing. It was probably the worst UK football game I've seen in 30 years. That is actually how awful the coaching and playing was vs. EKU.

If UKErik says it, it's ok with some of you. But if me or other UK fans say it, we are somehow debbie downers.

Wake up.....the playing, attitude, and coaching was horrendous against a pathetic, outmatched EKU team. We have triple the talent level of EKU.

Nothing is positive about that dumpster fire on Saturday. Some of you seriously act like beating EKU at home in overtime is a "quality win".

No, but it is A WIN. I'm not going to get too worked up about it because the guys have mostly played well until tonight. I mean I'm pretty sure that 14pt lead EKU was the first time all year we've been down that much. I will let the coaches worry about getting things fixed. Perfect timing for a bye week.

There's nothing to really feel good about this game except for that glimmer of hope at the end. But like I said at the beginning, it is a 'W' and we'll find out when Auburn comes to town if they learned a lesson or are just regressing.
