What if they gave a CFP championship - and nobody came or watched?

So how come UCLA can't ever get a top flight football team going? They have not been relevant nationally that I can remember since Troy Aikman was their QB.
Culture. It's Hollywood & tech focus, not sports. WC used to be at top of college baseball heap but that's gone by the wayside too.

True, pro sports and other individual sports, plus outdoor activity are just a lot bigger than college sports on the WC.

That being said, Oregon State has won the CWS at least twice in recent years, which frosts me no end because UK can't even get out of a regional, much less win a game or three in Omaha.

But to me, the bottom line is that it is not good long term for college football to basically become a deep south only sport. Eventually will lose a lot of national popularity.

You think football fans all over the country are going to stop filling up their home stadiums, watching their teams on TV, or stop supporting their schools, because the SEC is the best conference? Sorry, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Football is king and that’s not going to change. Baseball long ago lost it’s luster, basketball is barely watchable, and nobody in the southern half of the country cares about hockey. The NFL and college football dominate, and that’s not going to change just because two SEC teams are playing for the championship. Heck, UK is the best they’ve ever been and the Bengals are in the playoffs. I’ve been a football fan since birth, but this is the most excited I’ve ever been. I’m already looking forward to next year!

Wrong. Pro sports are bigger in the areas that have pro sports. It’s not a directional thing. It’s the whole country. The further away from those big cities you get, the more it is about college sports. Try living in New York sometime. Outside of Syracuse, fans in that state barely even know college sports exist.

And the SEC has been dominant since the advent of the BCS in 1998.

None of this is new, as we have just spent the first quarter-of-a-century convincing the world what we all knew was true back into the 80’s . . . the SEC is dominant.

The only real difference in the last ten years is that the lower traditional teams within the conference have leveraged their membership, so that all teams are recruiting in the Top 35 programs in the nation.

The Saban/Kirby dynamic makes this interesting despite being a rematch.

Georgia is HUNGRY for a title. They haven't won one since the 80's (I think). Their fans would trade their first-borns for a Dawgs natty. Alabama is playing for their 7th in a span of 14 years. Kirby being a Saban understudy, this has become a big time rivalry.

Not to mention, Georgia's highly acclaimed defense. Everyone sang their praises all season (for damn good reason), including us. Calling it possibly the best in CFB history. Alabama and Bryce Young shredded it a month ago.

The revenge factor here is significant.

Personally, I am excited to watch it. But I get the OP's argument as well...a lot of bitter people out there jealous of what the SEC has become.

Let the bitterness and jealousy lead to better results for them.

The clarity of SEC superiority surrounds us, and is so commonplace, now, it hardly earns mention. Case(s) in point . . . for the last two years Kentucky has played on a neutral field against a higher ranked opponent who had won more regular season games.

We were favored in both games, and won them.

I don't think any conference in all of sports has been more dominant than modern day SEC football. It's literally as clear as crystal.

What are we betting? I don’t mind buying beers, but if I am betting, I kind of like to know the bet.

Beer and beer only (or wine, or any other drink of your choice). Won't break either one of our budget. I can't drink like I used to (and don't want to either)

Oklahoma was pretty dominant in the 50’s, but no one else was in that conference.

The Big Ten had some runs in the 60’s and 70’s, but no: no other conference has had a quarter century like has the SEC.

Since 1998, it has been split in “thirds.” Bama has won a third, other SEC teams have won a third, and the rest of the country had won a third of the titles.

West Coast schools have won 7 of the last 16 college baseball World Series. But let’s not allow facts to get in the way of a good rant.
But just one of the last seven. That's going from 62% for 8 years pre-2014 to 14%. Just sayin.......

No. What is the bet?????? LOL

Aaaaah, now I understand. My prop is that this CFP championship will draw fewer viewers than any championship game since they went to a 4 team playoff in 2014 (I think). If you can find the Nielsen ratings, I will rely on your research. If we can't find all the records, backup wager will be that I will bet this game draws fewer viewers than the 2018 game. Does that make sense?

Also, do you happen to live in central KY? If not, I may have to Venmo your drinking money to you.

I simply stated a fact that many said would not happen, but did. The last UGA/Bama NC drew the second most viewers, according the an SEC podcast from last week. While I think tonight’s game will be close and college football fans across the country love close football games between the best teams, I don’t do Venmo and don’t live in Central Ky, any more. Regardless of the outcome, I am happy to serve you a fine brew at a tailgate next season.

Oh, there's no way the ratings for this will match 2018. Won't happen.

In regard to the "SEC" national champions over the years, let's just look at this.

BAMA- 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2020
LSU- 2003* (USC got left out of the BCS title game despite being ranked No. 1 in both polls- split title), 2007 (two losses"), 2019
Florida- 2006, 2008
Auburn- 2010
Tennessee- 1998

So 5 different teams have won a national championship since the BCS/CFP era that started in 1998 and Tennessee hasn't been relevant since 1998. So when they chant "SEC", it's all about these teams above in a conference of 14 teams.

Auburn, 2004…NFL players through the roof. Not a sexy team but a team that would have taken, for instance, 2002 Ohio State to the woodshed.

No, it’s the entire conference. Championships, bowl appearances, bowl wins, NFL draft picks, pro bowl appearances, Super Bowl wins, Super Bowl appearances, etc. The SEC conference and it’s players, as a whole, dominates all these categories, and has for a long time.

If UGA wins 2nite, that will be 6/14 winning it all since 98.

Can you do a comparison for other conferences over the same time period? It won't take you long.

I am willing to bet that tonight's game will draw the smallest TV audience in CFP history. Even the Iowa fans we tailgated with brought this up on NYD, no one outside of SEC country will bother to watch another UGA vs. Bama game. I will, but I am a college football fanatic and an SEC fan. Need new blood for sure, but right now, this looks like the old New York Yankees who won or were in the WS every year for decades.

I bet it's closer to the most watched than the least watched.

It may be THE most watched.

Yep nobody has the NIL resources that alumni has. Jimbo didnt just develop more charm overnight, its the NIL
I looked after the AA game. They have (4) 5 stars, (4) 3 stars, the rest are all 4 stars. They have a 28 man class.

It doesn’t change the fact that this sport has no parity so yeah, it won’t take long as it’s the same teams nearly every year. And half the teams I listed above have not been a contender for quite some time.

Again, there’s very few programs in the SEC who have won a title over the last 20 years. Bama (overwhelming majority) LSU, and Florida. Auburn had Cam Newton to give them their only title since the 50s.

Only two SEC teams have won a title since 2011. It’s Bama at the top every year that’s driving this success.

Either way, I hope like hell Georgia wins tonight. 🖕 Bama.

Well, I’m gonna do what I usually do for ratings when UK plays. I’m gonna tune in on my everyday iPhone, my older two iPhones (wifi), iPad, each cable box in the house (5), laptop, and desktop computer. Hope this helps.

I think it will have great ratings. People love college football and 49 states will be pulling for UGA to end the dynasty.

6 out of 14 is almost 50%. Obviously bama is the patriots of college football the past 20 years.

Acc Clemson and fsu.

Big 12 is TX and Oklahoma.

Big ten is osu.

Pac 12 is usc.

The sport overall is definitely top heavy.

Found this interesting that Saban said that if the ncaa doesn’t get a grip on the nil they ( assuming he meant Bama and a couple others) will continue to separate from the pack even further

The NIL just made things more open about the shadiness that is college athletics. The big programs have always bought recruits. Alabama has been notorious for the cars their football players have driven over the years.

The NCAA is on its death bed anyway.

Like, 1/3? That's few?

How many in, say, the Big 12? Or ACC? For comparison sake, so I can understand exactly what 'very few' is, in your mind...
I’m sorry but does anyone else puff their chest about a conference other than the SEC fans who have not won anything? No other conference in sports roots for a conference like this group does. So bizarre.

It’s a top heavy conference who until tonight only had two different national champions the last 12 years which is the same as the ACC did.

Glad Georgia won and congrats to them as it’s simply their accomplishment to brag about; not the fans of Vandy, Kentucky, SC, Arkansas, TAMU, Mizzou, Tennessee, Miss State or anyone else. 😂

I don't understand your obsession with dying on this hill.

It looks foolish. 6 SEC teams have won titles since the BCS/CFP began. I truly don't understand this stance or even why it's an issue.

I’ve heard many schools from every single conference do it. You need to get out more.
