So you take a guy who couldn’t get on the field at his old school and bring him in thinking he’ll be a top contributor here

I don’t get it

I wonder why academics never seems to be an issue when athletes transfer. At one time that was a big concern.

When was the last time any school declared an athlete academically ineligible?
Well, UK was trying to get Louisville transfer RB Peny Boone in school but admissions said no. That was just another reminder that UK doesn't care about football. What other SEC school (besides private school Vandy) would deny a big transfer? Answer: none.

That just isn't the case, if a transfer doesn't have the credit to be eligible, or enough transferable hours no one is taking them. Lots of those type kids are done once they hit the portal. In spite of what some may think, schools aren't going to risk their accreditation for some football or basketball player.

Publicly?

Several years, I would assume, as privacy laws have tightened the last 20 years.

Every year, virtually every program “silently” loses players, often at a 20 percent clip. And these losses used to carry some controversy, as good students who did not measure up athletically were being shed. We don’t hear the bitchin’ and moaning from the press, as now almost all schools practice this.

Hell, the turnover at all schools is so large, a kid is lucky to get any mention, at all, of the circumstances.

Well I do know the staff really wanted him and admissions said no. I can’t imagine if Kirby really wanted a kid that admissions would say no.

Transfers like Levis, Wandale, and Davis worked pretty well. Bossman Fat, Dare too.
All those guys had played. I think where it gets really iffy is guys like Brock, Jantzen Dunn, Tanner Bowles, Ben Christman, etc who were 4* and absolute takes in HS but haven't played a lick in 2-3 seasons. Just hard to know what we're actually getting.
Although on the inverse, sometimes the FCS or G5 kids look good at their level though and just can't make the leap athletically. Portal eval isn't always cut and dry

The NCAA showed they don't care about that when they refused to sanction UNC.

The athletes that took the bogus classes were certainly not in good standing once those classes were removed from their transcripts, or they were given an F. They were likely not even full time students during at least that semester in which they played and took the classes in question. Many of the high profile recruits only take 12 credit hours per semester. Drop one class and they weren't eligible.

That's why they stopped the investigation.

Dunn has been hurt, Bowles is no longer with the team, Christman had knee surgery but is on XP/FG unit.

Using the portal makes sense, just have to have strong eval. Get an older, more experienced player who already has time on college S/C program. Overall I think UK's portal experience is a plus but yes, there's been misses. Doubt if it's anymore than others have endured.

Then you would be incorrect, after the last president and his good buddy Jim Harrick pulled their tricks UGA is not putting academics at risk for an athlete. Now if you are talking about X about of dollars to build something you would likely be correct. UF is another place with academic integrity. AU, not so much, they were put on probation and about to lose their accredation because of an independent study for football players, but was discovered by regular students and taken by practically every studen. There was no syllabus, no meetings, but a 100% grade of an A. The conference isn't out to get a member, what would be the reasoning

Yeah I think eventually we’re going to see things settle down. Last few years have been Wild West via all the changes and things every football forum and the sports world in general have exhaustively talked about. Extra year of eligibility due to Covid and portal rules loosening key among them.

What we’ve seen is just not sustainable and really .500 at best in terms of pay off with talent and performance/results. Maybe worse, we’ve regressed in the high turnover portal era of the past few years.

You should hit the portal for emergency need of depth and maybe a unicorn. Other than that, I think Dabo is right and more programs will trend back to recruiting and developing guys that fit their culture and systems.

At least AU had guys who could read, TN didn't even have that.

Grumpy, did you notice TN has turned loose the Big Orange Propaganda Machine pissing and moaning about Sat's officiating? 🤣 TN is the last school who should bitch about officiating. Trying to cover for Chumlee's pissy coaching and the $8M QB's choking.

Peny never made it at UofL, he wound up at UCF and has gained a whopping 208 yards on 34 carries this season. Don't think he's a very good example of a miss.

I'm trying to find out what happened with him. He hasn't played since October 5 against Florida, and he doesn't appear on their injury report. Did he opt out, quit, get in trouble, etc.?

Of course they did, the face mask happened as soon as contact, he pull his helmet half way off and finally off. Anyone other than a vol knows a pitch forward is a pass, doesn't matter if it's underhand. Of course they want to complain about holding, ignoring their LT's te unique was to grab our guy by the neck on the way by. They had the fake injury while leading the charge to get it out of football. And that DT tiptoeing off the field hoping to get a delay on us. But trash is gonna trash. You do know they would beat us 9 out of 10 according to many of their posters. I am sure a couple will reply to me, but I have them on ignore and won't see it.

But the best part was watching their whiney little b!tch of a coach look like a bum and answering questions while picking his nose

Chumlee's offense is simple, he wants to spread you out, run quick before you get a look at it it is very dependent on his guys being able to out athlete you. They have a good RB who has to be accounted for but at the point the 8 million dollar man is also known aa Overthrow Nico.

But if he can't out athlete you, and you can control his run game, he is going to stand on the sidelines with that Chumlee clueless blank stare on his face because he has yet to make an adjustment in 4 years as a vol.

Rowland alluded to this and staff was concentrating on guys from lower levels who have shown they can play.
Finally. It’s different if it’s a young guy. I can see that. But getting juniors and seniors who’ve never or barely played ain’t it. Especially if you need them to start and not just be depth pieces

That's a perennial UK problem that is self created. If their course catalog matched up with hundreds of other schools across the country, none of this would be an issue.

A friend that uses to post a bunch once told me about a young woman from Lexingon that UK encouraged to transfer in FROM Northwestern University, offering her a scholarship to do so. I don't know the degree program. But got her to transfer in to UK. Cleared everything. Got her I to classes, and then notified her they wouldn't be accepting at least 3 classes she took AT NORTHWESTERN, because they didn't match up perfectly with the courses UK had in THEIR catalog.

Think about that. It's complete horsesht.

Her parents were furious. Her dad was a huge UK alum, booster, and fan, but he told them to gfy after that. She transferred back to NW at semester break. NW accepted all of her UK credits without question even though they clearly didn't match up with their catalog.

That whole UK admissions dept needed an overhaul decades ago. It's a frkn JOKE that a school not ranked in the top 25 of someone's degree field would SOLICIT a student to transfer in and then REJECT credits from a TOP 5 school for a student with at or near a 4.0.

You have to wonder how many potential UK athletes have been slow-walked into the program or denied because of that dept. Boone was likely a casualty of that.

To be fair, we should have mentioned Seth Raynor who in two seasons is pretty clearly the best PK we have ever had at UK. Seventeen straight FGs, a school record, and I think he also set the longest FG made in school history, 55 yards. Had he been here in 2022, I feel certain we would have been 8-4 or 9-3, kicking directly cost us at least one, if not two games that year.

He’s stayed eligible in college and was admitted into UL and UCF but not at UK. Again, if this were basketball and Pope wanted him, there wouldn’t have been an issue.
If Pope wanted him then grades wouldn’t be an issue. So you think Pope recruits dumb players? You must know a different Coach Pope.

Agree on Raynor but some of our problems were the snapper was awful that year. I think Raynor missed a point after or a FG but it was a bad snap.
