Hello everyone. I last posted on here when my team, Cleveland State, played Kentucky in November of the 13-14 season. the UK fans at the game were very kind and hospitable to my group that went. I will never forget your fans giving Cleveland State a standing ovation as we exited the court. I wanted to return the favor of sorts and offer a tour guide of Cleveland, of sorts. Feel free to ask me anything at all about what to see, places to go, or anything!

First, I think everyone going to Cleveland will be pleasantly surprised. We aren't the city that got dumped on for years anymore. The politicians have gotten their act together and the city has come a long way. We built a brand new convention center, which impressed the Republican national committee and they selected our city to host the RNC next July. I think the best kept secret in Cleveland is the restaurants. There are a ton of great restaurants, and most of them are run by local chefs that are well known nationally.

Restaurants - any restaurant downtown is going to be more expensive. There a several great steakhouses - the chain restaurant Morton's, as well as Hyde Park steakhouse, XO steakhouse (which I have been to), and Red the Steakhouse, which is the best one from what I have heard. If you want to head to the suburbs they have the chain places like Outback, Longhorn, and Brown Derby. Ruth Chris steakhouse is also on the East side of town. Blue Point is a very good seafood restaurant. Cleveland Chop is a little fancier than normal, but won't break the bank and offers a good variety. The local chef's restaurants are some of my favorites. Chef Michael Symon's restaurants B Spot (burgers) and Lola Bistro (variety) are excellent. Chef Rocco Whalen's restaurant Fahrenheit is a little away from downtown but excellent and worth the trip.

East 4th street, which is right next to Quicken Loans arena where the NCAA regional games will be, has several upscale options. Greenhouse Tavern is run by another local chef and I have heard very good things about. Zocalo is a popular Mexican restaurant. There is also a Vietnamese restaurant that the name escapes me. Several bar and wine bar options here as well.

The bar scene is pretty good. If you are looking for nightlife and club-type places, West 6th street downtown and West 25th street a short trip from downtown are both filled with night clubs and bars. Velvet Dog has a rooftop patio and is one of my favorites. Barley House has a nice atmosphere as well.

There are many bars right near Quicken Loans Arena as well. Panini's bar is a popular spot and has great sandwiches. Clevelander bar, Thirsty Parrot and Wilbert's are close by as well. Winking Lizard is near the arena, and is more of a sports bar. Harry Buffalo is literally across the street and has a nice bar, and offers bison burgers as well.

We have a full casino right near the arena too. Blackjack, roulette, craps, one floor of poker rooms and a couple floors on slots. I can give recommendations on what slots seem to have paid out best for myself. If you plan on gambling at all while up here, the casino offers free parking when you earn 15 tier credits at the casino, and the parking garage itself is connected to the arena by a walkway and is ideal for gameday.

Anyone looking for shopping can find several malls in the area. Southpark mall in Strongsville on the West side and Beachwood mall on the East side are regular malls. There are two very upscale shopping areas. On the west side, Crocker Park and on the East side, Legacy Village.

I also highly recommend our locally brewed beer, Great Lakes brewing, on West 25th street which is where the brewery is. They have several different really good craft beers. We also have Cleveland Whiskey which is distilled locally and is available in many local stores. 100 proof whiskey.

I'll probably think of more to add later! Feel free to ask and questions and welcome to town! Hope your stay is enjoyable and UK leaves Cleveland 38-0!

One thing I forgot to mention, is everyone will love the video board at Quicken Loans arena. It is brand new this year, and the largest scoreboard in the NBA. It is huge and crystal clear picture.

Delux 289, I agree with your post. In addition to being a Kentucky fan, I am also a huge fan of the Cleveland Browns. I attend a couple of games each year. I also visit the dowtown casino a few additional times per year. As you point out, there is much to enjoy on a visit to Cleveland.

I was expecting literally 80% UK fans downtown this weekend, but with West Virginia making it and them being closer than Lexington, maybe 67-70% UK fans. I could have had lower level tickets to all sessions of the regional for $250 each last year through my priority being a Cleveland State season ticket holder. I bet those seats are selling for over $500 right about now!

As far as hotels, we have the usual hotel places downtown. Hilton, Sheraton, Renaissance, Comfort Inn, Marriott, Doubletree, Hampton Inn, Ritz Carlton. Two brand new hotels just built within the last year are the Westin and the Metropolitan.

Also an FYI for your fans - the greater Cleveland sports commission just announced the free and open to the public practice times for each team at Quicken Loans arena on Wednesday. Wichita at 12:00 Noon, West Virginia at 1:00 pm, Notre Dame at 2:00 pm and UK at 3:00 pm if any of your fans want to go.

Thanks for the info! Also, congrats on getting LeBron back and clinching that playoff spot! (If you are a Cavs and/or LeBron fan, that is.)

Very excited about the Cavs. I was mad at LeBron for a year when he left but I got over it. Ecstatic now that he is back. Can't wait for the playoffs! The 4 years without him were really rough for the Cavs.

Rocky River is a nice suburb on the west side. Right on Interstate 90, only 10 minutes from downtown. You might have to go slightly West of Rocky River on I-90 but there are a lot of chain hotels right on the interstate. Courtyard, Super 8, Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, etc. Crocker Park shopping mall is close to there. There is also a cool place called Dave and Busters close by. It is huge and has a lot of pool tables, TVs to watch sports, and a huge arcade.

Also 10 minutes south of downtown on Interstate 77, Rockside road is a really good place to stay. Some nice hotels, tons of restaurants and some shops there. Also in a great location near many major interstates if you want to get around town easily.

Quick question about a restaurant not on your list: We had someone recommend Urban Farmer and we made reservations, so have you heard anything negative? Reviews looked pretty good. Just trying to see if I should change my steak game really quickly before things get booked up this week.

Delux... No mention of the Velvet Dog? I'm disappointed, lol. But everyone going, have a great time. Cleveland is a fun city.

My mistake. I just read your OP and saw you mentioned it. Thanks again!

Nice

I might even rethink my plans to be in Tampa on business this week and weekend over on the beach

......

NOT!

Excellent post and gracious invitation, thank you. Also, if you haven't been to the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame its pretty cool and a good way to kill a few hours.

Great Lakes beer is the best!! Hands down my favorite beer right now. Anyone here who likes good beer has to try it. and get to the brewery if you can. My favorite of their beers is the Eliot Ness. I just had a seasonal Irish Ale last Saturday night at my neighborhood tavern and it was wonderful. I am lucky my local grocery carries it.

I worked for a group that had its annual convention in Cleveland about 10 years ago, and even then it was well on its way back. We had a great time there. One great thing is the city has New York caliber restaurants but you don't have to pay New York prices.

Serious music fans should not miss the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's great. Cool location and building, and its collection of records and artifacts is awesome.

Cavs are playing the Sixers on Sunday if anyone wants to stick around and see Nerlens in action. He's playing really well now.

I knew I forgot to mention something! Yes, I have heard really good things also about Urban Farmer steakhouse! It is connected to the Westin hotel on St. Clair Ave.

If I was a UK fan and making reservation for just one steak meal, or two, here is my rankings in order, from everything I have heard, or been to myself:

1) Red the steakhouse
2) Ruth Chris (in Beachwood, East side)
3) XO steakhouse
4) Urban Farmer
5) Morton's
6) Hyde Park
7) Cleveland Chop

Burgers, Johnn'y little bar on West 6th has amazing burgers. And like I mentioned earlier, B spot is awesome

And for any fans of some adult entertainment, we have strip clubs downtown in the flats. Actually a pretty nice setting right on the Cuyahoga river. The most strip clubs are on Brookpark Rd which is a little south west of downtown.

If anyone likes cigars, we have a few cigar shops downtown. West 25th street has Cigar Cigars, and on St. Clair Ave. there is Cousin's cigar.

I recommend staying in Streetsboro, a classy little suburb of Cleveland. The Taco Bell there is really nice. One rule, you must have a line beard and a pick up truck to stay at their motels.

+1 on Great Lakes beer. Everything they make is good, my fav is the Edmund Fitzgerald porter. Delicious.

I won't be there, but that's darn nice of you. With Notre Dame, UK, and WVU all being close I'd say your city is about to get some college basketball fan visitors. We've been talking a lot about the place in recent weeks. No, not saying anything bad just the whole NCAA geography thing, and who was going to be sent where.

Is the train good to ride? We're staying in Beachwood. Are we good? We do a lot of business in Ohio but have never been further than Akron. A friend told us to eat at Lucky's, what do you think? I REALLY need a gyro, got any recommendations downtown?

I agree my friend...

while I'm not able to go to Cleveland, this is hands down the classiest poster I've ever seen from a visitor on this board. Thank you for the hospitality for those who can go.

I won't hold that against you and welcome back!

There is no doubt. Although West Sixth's Cocoa Porter ain't half bad either.

It's been years but Cleveland is fun as long as you stay far, far away from the local NFL team.

I forgot to mention many of the things to do around town!

The West Side Market has been around for a long time and is famous. It has local produce and meat vendors selling their product. It is open on Friday and Saturday this week when you all would be in town.

We have a pretty good aquarium, a very good art museum from what I've been told, and the rock n roll hall of fame is always coming out with new exhibits that are interesting.

For live music, the House of Blues downtown has a different band every night and does bring in some big names a few times a week.

And I can't forget to mention, if you or your significant other enjoy going to theater shows/musicals, we actually have the second largest performing arts center in the country, Only behind Lincoln Center in NYC. They did a huge renovation on Playhouse Square last year, and the area is really nice, highlighted by a chandelier hanging over the street!

Also near the theaters at Playhouse Square is the Hofbräuhaus, a German themed bar/music place that is always packed with people.

We have a country music venue opening on the river in the flats in a couple months but not done quite yet! There's also a new hotel called Aloft along Lake Erie and the river that is new as of last year.

Also today the Cleveland Plain Dealer mentioned that UK fans will be watching at Corner Alley, a bowling alley downtown on East 4th street: http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2015/03/5_things_kentucky_fans_should.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
