Video of all 5 of Travis' fouls. Spoiler - they were all bad.

I'll always believe that the team has to be good enough to beat the other team and the refs. With that out of the way, these refs were terrible. How is that Travis has one foul in the first half, and suddenly collects the rest in a matter of minutes. He would look at a player funny, and they'd call a foul. I understand taking a charge is supposed to be a part of the game, but Williams takes it to a different level. The only solace I take is that he won't be doing anything in the NBA.

I think that when a ref makes a bad call, they try to even it up on the other side.

That's where I think the evening ends tho.

I mean guys.......since Cal has gotten here most years we have made more free throws than our opponents have taken.

We have feasted at getting fouled and getting to the line lol

Most seasons, offensive rebounding and getting to the line IS our offense.

How much of that is because of the talent disparity in most games? I doubt you will see that kid of difference in game vs Duke, Carolina, Tennessee, etc where the talent is equal. And that's where officiating enters the equation.

Exactly this. Travis' first foul came at the 17:27 mark in first half. His next foul at 12:03 in 2nd half. Then he gets 3 more fouls all the final 5 minutes of the game. I can't recall ever seeing something like that before.

I'm not normally one to blame officials on a loss. And yes, we probably should have won this game even despite them. But my God, this one was truly awful. I went back and made a "highlight" reel of the 5 "fouls" on Reid Travis. I would contend that every one of them was a bad call. Maaaaybe the first one. And perhaps a no call on his 4th. People only want to look at the last 1 or 2 calls. But every bad call matters against one of your most important players. There is no way you will convince me that we lose this game without Reid.

All that being said, although I'm frustrated with the loss, I think we actually played great today (aside from the final 3 minutes), and definitely are playing well enough to contend for a title. Excited for tomorrow to see who we will be beating next week!

OMG!!!!!

So it stands to reason, since Cal makes it an emphasis to pound to ball inside, we SHOULD be taking more free throws than our opponents.

What I would like to know however, is the splits between non conference games and conference games. I bet it’s a lot closer in sec play. Which is the problem. When we get into conference play the officials job seems to be more to even the odds than it is to actually call the game correctly.

The block on Reid...I can’t imagine how frustrating that is. He tried giving them what they wanted and they still tagged him. Reid didn’t make any contact on that play. Williams sticks his arm into Reid and Reid, back pedaling, falls over and they call a foul.

Smh...again, why are we doing this? Why do we give time, money and attention to this shit sport?

That's the most frustrating thing to me. It honestly makes it hard to be a passionate fan. If only we could ever just watch the game and know with confidence that the best team is going to win. Doesn't that sound like a dream?

I came across this article from a few weeks back about officiating: https://www.tennessean.com/story/sp...versy-brings-up-bigger-ncaa-issue/2976001002/

While it stems from the Anthony Jordan/LSU/UT controversy, the writer makes some other good points: “. . . Officiating is a difficult job. College football and basketball officials need to be better. They need to be held to higher standards. They should be more accountable, made available more easily after games to answer questions. And they should be paid accordingly and have human workloads. . . Even with all that money flying around and with all the impact these officials have on the outcomes of games.

Even with all the gambling money that surrounds college athletics — money that’s going to take leaps in years to come. The math is easy to do here.

If you haven’t read it, check out ESPN.com’s piece from last week on how Tim Donaghy fixed NBA games and made an estimated hundreds of millions for multiple gamblers. It’s one guy, one glimpse, but it shouldn’t be ignored. And he wasn’t scraping for money. . . .
But this is a reminder that the people who employ these officials should give more to them, expect more of them and know more about them. Others sure are watching.” END QUOTE

This is one of the very few articles calling for greater transparency on the part of officials.

Easy fix: get rid of the charge call.

Let the ball handler initiate some degree of contact (not excessive). Players guard in the post at their own risk.

Falling backwards in the post = no call.

99.9% of the time any situation where the defensive player falls backwards is due to a flop anyway. Even a firm elbow in the gut or chest wouldn’t cause a guy to fall to his ass. At best, the kid would be knocked backward a foot or so. Wouldn’t fall to the ground.

Will never happen, but I hate seeing bums like Grant Williams rewarded with bs fouls because of acting skills. This is basketball, not drama club.

He did push off for that one .

In today’s pre-Game 1 press conference, when asked about late-game mishaps during the SEC Tournament vs. UT, Cal replied, knowingly, that there were things he couldn’t say (i.e., regarding officiating), and said, “Go back and look at the tape, you may have a different opinion. . . .”

Here’s the clip (queued):

When things are compiled on tape, people do take notice, they can’t refute what their eyes see and can judge for themselves.

Still shaking my head. Sec officials have screwed UK so many times one loses count.

Yes, I heard that. I was nodding right along with him. What kindof sucks is I feel like trying to make something of this, to get these officials to take responsibility, but hell, even our own fans basically just say "quit crying about the refs. Gotta win that game." etc. etc.

I'm sorry but we shouldn't have to beat a team and the refs. And for the record there have been several games this year that I felt the officials actually did a great job. And not just in our blowouts. It's understandable to miss one here and there, but to see this level of incompetence at a high level in our sport should outrage everyone, not just our own fans.

I was watching with someone from cuba that had never watched basketball, doesn't know about any team or school and they said to me after the game, " it seemed like they cheated and the refs were paid....is that normal? "

Lol, true story

You all think that's bad? I actually took a video of all those calls and sent them to my friends, but also took videos of many more instances. By my calculations the refs accounted for a minimum of 15 points in TNs favor in final 6 minutes btw. But since idk how to post the videos on here, I'll do the next best thing and give you the game times of when they happened if anyone else wants to take liberty to check what im talking about and do it feel free. It gets bad folks all in all I took 17 videos of all egregious calls in TNs favor but the op posted many of em.

Also what y'all dont realize is on Travis 5th foul it was actually a clear hook on grant Williams which is his go to post move, I've seen refs make that call every time all year yet somehow grant Williams uses it 5-6 times a game and he NEVER gets called for it. Travis' 4th and 5th each should've been Williams 5th foul, after Travis 5th Williams hit corner three when he should've been on bench fouled out. But oh well here's the game times of the trash calls for anyone wanting to check, this was also just a quick scan of trash calls I did this very quickly probably many more I didn't see because I just kept hitting the 30 second fast forward button til I saw bad calls.

1st half

15:23-pj called for over the back, thing is he does swipe for the ball, but he also doesn't touch the ball or player and still gets it called, had to sit final 14 on bench cuz of said trashness.

12:24-Schofield walks up a freaking storm and no call, this one is truly comical and one I want everyone to see.

9:50-They call a very questionable walk on EJ at the corner 3pt line, but there's no way in hell you can miss the one on admiral which was egregious as can be then call this a walk when IMO that's not a walk on EJ at all.

2nd half

14:26-They call a foul on EJ, but it was a block and all ball.

13:57-Grant Williams does that go to hook spin move which should be an offensive foul to create space for open layup

13:29-Quickley goes to lane for floater, contact, no call. I'd have no issue with this no call at all as long as they call it same both ways, numerous examples of them not calling it same both ways all game.

12:20-Shortly after the no call on the quickley shot, they call a foul on quickley as the TN players drives the lane and throws up a miserable layup attempt, quickly was backpedalling and going straight up, you cant ignore the contact on the quickley drive a couple plays before then call this a foul on quickley, you just can't have it both ways. There's no way in hell this should've been called a foul regardless, very egregious call.

Then the OP posted the KJ charge on Williams flop and the 3rd, 4th and 5th calls on Travis all of which miserable calls.

0:12- Scramble for loose ball TN players gets it and going out of control bulldozes Ashton hagans running full speed while hagans tho not set, was in legal guarding position and the TN player was also very out of control. My favorite view on this call is when they do the replay from the camera inside the backboard, that's the best angle you get on this call. No way in hell would they (maybe these refs would) call this a foul on hagans the first 39 minutes of a game. Instead of TN FTs while already up 2 it should've been UK ball down 2, this IMO was a horribly horrendous call, hagans is clearly in legal guarding position and the player just going out of control bulldozes him going full speed, you can even see the TN player feels like the call is being made on him at first because he knew he had fouled, just feel like they didn't want to reward us on the clear offensive foul by giving us another chance at the win. No way in hell is this not called an offensive foul tho in the first 39 minutes by any officiating crew.

Showed the clip to my brother who doesn’t follow hoops too much anymore , he was quite shocked and said “ they obviously wanted that guy out of the game “

Don Daily, who infamously refereed the game vs UT, will be on the whistle tonight for our Sweet Sixteen matchup vs. Houston.

Perhaps we should have this video on hand and tweet it out with #MarchMadness and appropriate hashtags every time there’s a bad call. . . .hopefully there won’t be any, though!

Go ‘Cats!

Cal has been robbed of at least 3 National Championships at Kentucky by scheming cheating refs. He didn't even need Duke levels calls, just non-biased officiating and Cal has 3 more.
The OP’s post is about an SECT game, not an NCAA tournament game. Even if we presume the ref gripe valid, in NO way whatsoever did that loss cost us a national title.

Why this dead thread was revived three years later is beyond me. @HerrosHeroes being a weirdo is the only apparent explanation.

LOL, what in the world? Was randomly scrolling through posts and see one of my own from 3 years ago. Thought I was in the twilight zone. After last night's vandy game I guess it is somewhat appropriate to be bringing back up. That 2nd half had some of the worst officiating I've seen in a long time.

Maybe someone owes some money to Vegas and has to repay some debts every now and then.

LOL! We were discussing in another Thread last night that 2 of the 3 officials from this 2019 SEC Tournament loss to UT—Steven Anderson and Don Daily—were also on the whistle vs Vandy last night. The games did have some unfortunate similarities…😉 Glad we won yesterday! Go ‘Cats!

I would argue last nights game wasn’t lopsided though. Vandy didn’t get any favors either. It was just awful.

I haven’t been following the news, did Reid Travis ever face life in prison for his brutal assaults on Grant Williams that night?
