Very Real Scenario Regarding Sumrall (Bad)

It won’t surprise me at all if Stoops stays another year just because he has no other options and doesn’t have anything else to do. Meanwhile a bigger school hires Sumrall and UK will have missed its chance.

Personally, Id love IU’s Cignetti but he just got an extension that doubled his pay so that’s probably out the window. But he would seems to be a lock to turn your program into a title contender based on what he’s done everywhere he goes. Sumrall would be my close second choice though. I can only imagine how pissed BBN would be if Jon gets hired somewhere else because Stoops doesn’t leave.

I’d say that’s a very real scenario that will probably happen. Stoops isn’t going anywhere as much as some think he will. I can definitely see Sumrall moving to a higher level program after this year.

The only options CMS has at this point are walking away or maybe a G5 gig if he still has any desire to coach. Maybe DC/AHC type of role at another P5 if he's got the itch but just wasn't to deal with all the other shit.

He's not getting hired away by P5 anymore.

Summerall most likely will be a leading candidate for a lot of good to even great jobs this offseason.

What is the job Sumrall is expected to take? Florida isn't coming open and I'm not sure about Auburn yet. Asking because I just don't know.

Hopefully he's content to stay at Tulane and not leave after only 1 season and know that the UK job is his in the very near future.

We may luck out and Sumrall not get a P4 job after this year because there don't appear to be many high profile openings. I could see Auburn opening but that would be 3 coaches in 4 years and that is not a recipe for winning.

Why would Cignetti even consider a lateral move like that in the first place? He’s 64. IU in the Big 10 isn’t much different than us in the SEC and they are a power conference that’s actually better than the SEC so far this year. Cignetti is not realistic. If he leaves IU it will be for a traditional power. Michigan, Penn St., Auburn, Florida, etc. Not Kentucky.

I think Stoops could pull a Calipari and make a move to another P5 program, but it would be more of a lateral move type situation with a pay cut. I know people will say he’s stupid for that and he won’t leave his fat payday. Cal did it, Tubby Smith did it back in the day, it’s not unheard of when a coach knows he’s not wanted anymore, fans start revolting, ticket sales drop, NIL funds and resources dry up. I think there are a number of programs who would love to have Stoops and would gladly bring him in and give him more resources to succeed. Think of a program like Michigan St., Pitt if their coach leaves for greener pastures, obviously Iowa if Ferentz hangs it up. Kansas if their coach moves on, etc.

Most former players who go into Coaching dream of a return to their alma mater.
I have not spoken to Jon Sumrall since he left for Troy, but he was happy his three years in Lexington, and proud of having once led UK in tackles.

Even when not at UK, he was close with John Schlarman and Neal Brown, having Coached with them.

Jon is from Northern Alabama, and knows the mantra of Bear Bryant: “When Mama calls, you pick up the phone.”

You never know for sure, though. NFL could poach a high profile guy. Who would have guessed Oklahoma and Notre Dame would have opened at end of '21?
