UNC's Roy Williams Retiring

We’re UK not one of the sweet 16 teams. Should we lower our standards to theirs?
Cal over UK reasoning at its best on display
We are definitely not one of the sweet 16 this year. We need to raise our standard to at least that level.

The Zags would’ve defeated us in the Championship game. Few doesn’t panic or play stall ball. Cal does both.
Zags would’ve defeated UNC if the ref didn’t overlook the UNC player laying out of bounds holding the ball.
The Zags were the best team in 2017 like they are this season.
That UK team didn’t play stall ball though, they actually scored the entire year.

“If“ is the key word here.
”If” Cal doesn’t win on in the next 2 years, then?
I know I’m not holding my breath thinking it’s going to happen.
Calipari will never win another Title at UK until he brings Antigua back to the staff. Or, someone who can evaluate talent. Who knows, maybe Jai Lucas will fill that role but, I'm not holding my breath. There's a LOT of unproductive dead weight on the bench in the form of assistants right now.

Yeah, they had some great shooters, but then went and lost in the 2nd round to Wisconsin.

They had 10 losses that year, I didn't realize that until just now.

As far as Kevin Stallings, he started at Vandy in the 99/2000 season. He went 19-11 his first year, but then went 15-15, 17-15 and 11-18 his next 3 years. It's a tough place to win.
Agree, but even those numbers are way ahead of what woke Stackhouse is doing.

Even though he coached for one of our rivals I will miss him.

- 3 championships
- 9 final 4s
- 900+ wins

heck of a career

Just now seeing this as i have had problems with computer. I hope they have problems hiring someone but i think it will be between Miller and Davis . Roy was a know cheater at Kansas and UNC. Basketball will be better without him. Going to be interesting next year.

The reason UNC always has to hire an insider is that anyone coming in from the outside to a place that is a cheating factory complete with NCAA approved no-show classes is going to turn and walk away if they have an ounce of credibility.

Any school accused of anything by the NCAA should laugh at them and tell them to go pack sand until they do something about North Carolina.

Lol @ his retirement speech. "I never thought I was ever the best man for the job"

What is it about college basketball coaches that always seem to have an element of "used car salesman"? I feel like you don't see this in the other sports as much..

But Roy, Self, K, Pitino, and yes even Cal.

Reports that the big reason for Roy to hang it up THIS season, was the departure of Walker Kessler. That this was the final nail in the coffin.

Roy Williams would still be coaching if he actually had a serviceable team next year.

I’m probably in the minority but I always liked Roy. Actually met him once and he was as nice a guy as could be, even though he didn’t have to be. Wish I could say the same for some of the other college coaches I’ve been around. Roy, Tubby and Spurrier are the 3 nicest coaches I’ve ever met.
You’re not. Most reasonable sane people like Roy.

I just hope the next coach keeps playing like UNC did under Williams. They were an aggressive offensive team.

Watched '95 SEC Championship the other day and seeing Kentucky and Arkansas play made me wonder WTF happened to coaching and what is being sold to coaches at these clinics? Teams were going at it and the goal was to score off the best shot as quickly as possible. Despite game being edited to fit the 2 hr window-I'd speculate there were more FGA's attempted by both teams at halfway mark of 1st Half then most games have today 3/4 through the game.

I mean we just witnessed an Elite 8 game in '21 that was 51-49 and the team who won didn't make a FG for 10 mins in the First Half. That's disgusting.

I hate the way basketball played today is be coming popularized from the infatuation with the 3 to the devaluing of bigs. UK and Arkansas used to be a slugfest. Both teams going back and forth and trying to make the other tap out.

Funny how the zeroes in front of the decimal point has made CBB a control freak's game instead of letting the players get up and down. No coincidence the top team is a team that gets out and plays fast and figures the object of the game is to score more points then the opponent. Tomorrow they will be playing the symbol of what ails the sport in Mick Cronin.

He coaches UNCG. Been there about 10 years. Gets a lot of hype but not really performed to the hype he gets. He may kill at UNC though. Who knows?
Yeah I know he’s hyped up but I have no reason why. Just seems way lower class than they should aim for. It’s easily a top 2-3 job.

Greensboro was an absolute dumpster fire of a program. 35% winning percentage under the last coach and no real history of anything. He’s won 75% of his games the last 5 years and gone to 2 of the last 4 NCAAs from a 1-bid conference. He absolutely has done a great job with less than nothing. And should be rewarded soon with a P5 program.

But feel good stories and on-the-job training won’t get you far at UNC. Repeat his success at a bigger school and maybe down the road. But not now.
