Ugghh....Cal getting hammered on Twitter!

Why cant people grasp that freshmen dont have time to learn all the x's and o's so Cal sacrifices it in order to have massive talent on the team?

If Cal went to a traditional system... his old system before DDO and one and done, you would once again see the Jr's and Sr's and a return of the strategies , X's and O's that made Cal dominant at UMass and Memphis.

Cal's one and done is obviously superior to his 4 year player methods and its not even close. I wish there was a way to download plays into the players' brains within 3 months..... but unfortunately thats just not the case. So its not Cal being ignorant to play calls.... its that he knows the odds of a plays success without players practicing that play are very low so thus, he sacrifices on that aspect and just goes with what he can get done in 3 months with freshmen players.

I so wish.

Here's one from the main board from June 22

"UL fans..... pick one........

1. Cal gets credit for lottery picks and blame for guys who dont pan out.... or

2. Cal just recruits these guys and a couple of months doesnt make a difference thus players who dont pan out were just ranked wrong and didnt have it in them in the first place

You cant have your cake and eat it too here..... you cant both ignore his lottery picks and blame him for guys like Skal etc... using the same logic."

here's the link https://forums.rivals.com/posts/21395383/

I have a lot of posts but here's one to start off. Its going to take a while to sift through my tons of posts here on this board so give me some time.

The good news is that no one watches espn anymore...so most realize that USA didnt gold medal in international competition, since forever.
A little more concerning to me, is that he still wants to let players work through their poor play rather than adjusting (in big games)

Here's another one from May 4th where I dont mention Cal by name but I'm obviously defending his one and done methods. (if I didnt like the man.. then why am I defending him ?"

https://kentucky.forums.rivals.com/posts/5895447/

"I'm perfectly fine with flooding the NBA with talent year after year. its setting UK up for future success when these guys are 40-50 years old and have their hands in the basketball cookie jar across america. Maybe then we might be handed titles the same UNCheat gets."

Here's another one from April 24th where I defended Cal in a colorful way lol

https://kentucky.forums.rivals.com/posts/5874436/
"Why on earth wouldnt Cal of asked Diallo to play? Of course Cal wanted him to play... I've heard Cal mention that the decision was Diallo's .... twice actually.

Some of our posters are giving vaginas a bad name......... Yeah Cal is going to sabotage the entire team because F**k you.. thats why. right?? right? lol sheesh"

"2010 - lost due to a fluke horrible shooting game (also Higgins officiated)
2011- we werent even supposed to be a final four team
2012 won
2013- didnt even get a chance thanks to an injury to Noel
2014- Over rated players in high school who shouldnt even of made the title game
2015- this time we kinda blew it........ but then again ... (Higgins officiated)
2016- did the best we could (Skal played so bad it was like he was throwing games)
2017- nightmare row and lost on a last second shot to the 1 team better than us.

You see 2011 and 2014 and think those are blown years because we were so close....... and COMPLETELY ignore that the team had to play above their heads to even get to that point. I suppose you would of preferred for them to lose in the 2nd round or sweet 16 which is where they were projected to be????"

I think Im done for now proving that I like Cal as our coach. If i didnt love him as our coach.. I wouldnt be taking up for him so much like I do.

Yea the crystal ball did not predict Duke for Wiggins, Murray, or Coleman. Only for a brief time did Duke lead for Green. The best example would be Knox.

Duke insiders seem confident with Reddish (more so than with Knox but less so than guys like Carter and Trent) but they also acknowledge the time spent with Cal this summer could affect things.
Crystal Ball actually had Knox buttonholed for UNC. But that example still reinforces the same point. The guys at Crystal Ball are just guessing, like the rest of us. It doesn't bother me at all that Crystal Ball currently predicts some desirable players as heading to other schools. They will, for sure, be wrong on a lot of them, if not most of them.

Knox Crystal Ball was 87% Duke with Duke leading for almost a full year. It's not hard to look this stuff up.

Name me a coach that wins without great players. Also, what is your definition of a great player? Cal won at Memphis and UMASS. He had some good players, but he wasn't exactly knocking it out of the park on the recruiting trail. Nobody has won at those schools since Cal left.

Mark Few and Brad Stevens come to mind but I didn't intend to knock Cal with my post and I don't want Mark Few or Brad Stevens as the UK coach. I said I'm happy to have him and hope he stays. His recruiting is insane (as in great) and he has a contender almost every year come March. As far as great players goes he's had too many to list i.e. John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, KAT, and almost every player he signs. His Memphis team that lost to Kansas had that game sewn up and lost and our 38-1 team wouldn't have lost without Cal's loyalty to his players taking precedence over X's and O's. You can't pick and choose my comments over my entire message. He's a great recruiter that has us knocking on the door every year and I'm happy to enjoy the ride. I just think freshmen phenoms are great and he's the master but he's made a few bad coaching moves (by his own admittance) that has cost us a game or two. But as I said, his overall body of work is great.

Matt Norlander on CBS sports has a really good article about Cal bashers, some of you need to read it and back away from the ledge.

It's not good because USA basketball has been dominating Intl play for many years. Cal has wanted a chance to coach one of their teams and he got it and it didn't work out too well.
It won't hurt recruiting but it will shine a negative light on Cal and fuel his haters and will give them plenty to bash him with.

So if it doesn't affect recruiting, on a practical level, what does it matter?

Cal had Derrick Rose at Memphis and Marcus Camby at UMass.

While I expect it will have no lasting impact on UK's recruiting, I wonder if it might effect his recruiting efforts of any players on the U19 team?

Maybe his style needs modified. I don't want excuses for not winning it all.

It hurts Cal's legacy. Any chance of him being the modern day Coach K is now gone.

Lets face it, the GOAT would have never lost this game.

The "GOAT" lost when he coached at this level back in 1990. The "GOAT" is smart enough he'd not have taken this job. He'll stick to coaching NBA guys and the "GOAT" was a Kobe Bryant performance away from losing the Gold Medal game with 2 of the top players of all time on the same team (Kobe and Lebron).

I say this as a non UK fan who is critical of how 19U team was coached.

Shouldnt a coach always be looking for ways to improve? Or modify things to change with the ever changing landscape?

As far as winning a title......... With the NCAA putting Higgins and Sirmons in our way just about every year......... I cant fault the man for not winning another title. Its corrupt as hell. its an excuse and it sucks using excuses but it sucks even worse when those two officiate.

Wouldnt Wooden with 10 titles be the Goat?

Let me guess, you're one of those fans who went out on a limb and became a Duke fan after the '92 title?

Hilarious. What's even more hilarious is what will become of your program when K steps down.

71 next February, and counting...

Stop blaming refs! The refs DID NOT make us have 3 shot clock screw ups.

We obviously don't see eye to eye on a regular basis but the above post is an excellent point.

I wondered if anyone caught Cal's quote about the loss:

“R.J. (Barrett) had it going. I told the team after the game, I needed to try some different things – go zone, trap pick and roll, trap him,” Calipari said in a postgame statement. “I kind of rode it because I thought we would figure out something, and that is my mistake. That’s not these kids’ mistake.”

It's absolutely baffling to me that he thinks "we will figure something out". I just dont get that. He's the coach. He's supposed to figure it out for them. He's supposed to coach them in the game to "go zone", or "trap pick n roll". Why would any coach in a big game just leave it to a bunch of kids to figure out? Did he leave it to them to figure out in 2010 against WVU? Was it them figuring it out that led to three straight shot-clock violations in 2015? I just don't get that at all.

I would venture to say that Cal has hurt his chances of ever being the Olympic coach.

Yeah, if this hurt him anywhere, it might be here.

Finishing in third place when you've got BY FAR the most talent doesn't exactly send the right message for your first audition coaching the USA in a major FIBA tournament.

And, frankly, the team did not look well-coached compared to how Canada played--very poor defense, guys out of position and looking lost, no noticeable adjustments to deal with Barrett, etc.--just a really weak effort by the USA team all around in that game.

But, oh well, it's over, and I doubt Cal had much chance of ever being the Olympic coach anyways.

But I still prefer Cal. with this flaw vs any other college coach (who ALL have their own FLAWS)

Yeah it does matter........ its not life is over type matter but it definitely is we're going to be f*cking annoyed by haters for a year now type of matter. and for Cal...... this will hurt in recruiting... bank on it.

We will see.

Rival coaches do care and they will hit that note until the key is a stump. Power of persuasion ... Say something enough and people might just believe it. Look it up... psychology is a helpful tool in everyday life.

I doubt it but you seem to have bought into it so somebody believes it. It's seems more of an overreaction to me.

Mike it's the same guys after every bad game or loss. This is easier to predict then the weather, lol.

So let me get this straight, are you saying that coach K is the GOAT? Seriously? The word "Lehigh" comes to mind. That is far worse than this USA U19 team losing to Canada.
He had the "greatest collection of talent ever" and lost to South Carolina in the second round last season. He totally mismanaged that squad.

You going to confuse him jeff with all those facts, plus he's an ACC fan, lol.
