Tubby Smith has agreed to be the coach at Memphis

^ oh, I agree...we tried the young 'up-and-comer' thing with Pastner...he was the Arizona wunderkind who spent a year under Cal learning the shady side of recruiting Memphis...it worked pretty good for 5 years (130-44 record) but the last 2 seasons were very underwhelming...we also had a mass exodus of players the last 2 seasons...I wish him well at GT as he could have held our feet to the fire over his buyout...he gave us the 'velvet divorce' we all wanted with GTech.

But even then he failed to get past the 1st weekend of the tournament.

I hate that the NCAA changed the naming of the rounds of 64 and 32 for a few years. I just looked up Memphis's NCAA records to check (because I so badly want a Cards fan to be a liar... jk), and they made the "third round" twice. Thankfully I noticed it didn't say Sweet Sixteen or I might have give Pastner more credit than he deserved.

You might be right. Rick winning in 98 is absolutely not a given. 1997 should have been won, but we had lingering injuries. Tubby did out coach K by a mile.

That was a loooong time ago. Tubby had UK, and he was younger, with great players left by another coach. It is what it is.

People in Memphis like to see a team play fast. They've been dying for it since the Cal days, and even Pastner is faster than Tubby. All of my Memphis friends want to know when asking me

1. Can he recruit....
2. Does he get fast with certain recruits.....

Seriously, what would you tell them?
True, but at the same time Memphis fans need to know their role. They act like they are a top 15 program....theyre not.

Memphis has 3 Final Fours (73, 85, 08), 6 Elite Eight's, and 11 Sweet 16s....I'm seriously not concerned with the NCAAs vacated records as Wiki, ESPN, CBS, etc all show Memphis' full NCAA record.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/history/_/team1/6587

It's not exactly UK or UL numbers...but, The 70s feature an NCAA runner-up with Gene Bartow and Larry Finch...the 80s have a Final Four with Dana Kirk and Keith Lee...in the 90s Larry Finch returned as coach to lead Penny Hardaway and Elliot Perry to a Sweet 16 and Elite Eight...and of course what Cal did the 2000s

Memphis basketball has 4 decades of success, and is a known hoops power/name...we are much more than John Calipari.

Not much to point to in the way of accomplishments. And, no, you are not a "...known hoops power/name."

That's beyond laughable.

Memphis fans.

Unbelievable. Living with them is like living with an ugly fat wife while she wears spandex and glitter everyday.

Good try, but you are making comments like that on the wrong message board. I think the minimum requirement for people to recognize a "known hoops power/name" here is 3 titles (and even those aren't a given), not 3 final four appearances. Memphis has had moments worth being proud of, but you are not going to impress anybody here. Memphis certainly has history, but Kentucky fans measure success by a completely different standard.

edit: I'm not saying this is a reasonable standard to measure by, but just telling you how it is. You're arguments are going to fall on deaf ears.

I second this. I lived in Jackson with Memphis fan roommates during Cal's last several years at Memphis. I admit it, I was jealous of their momentary success (and apparently Barnhart was too), but they really thought they were a Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, or Duke level program. They were really just 89-90 and 90-91 UNLV wannabes. Great teams, but footnotes in history.

top-15? nah...not YET!

I would say Memphis is a top-25 job...and by that I mean #24 or #25

So, a top 25 team has losing records to Tennessee, and been to one final four.

fun facts******

Kentucky has more elite eights than memphis has tournament appearances.
Kentucky has 3 fewer final fours than memphis has tournament appearances combined.

And also, Memphis fans like to peddle this "top 25 program nonsense. In reality, it's not even close. Sagarin and ESPN teamed up to name top the 100.

******more fun facts for Memphis......

Memphis comes in at 61. All time

Teams the rating system has ahead of Memphis.

Utah
Cincinnati
St. Johns
Kansas State
Depaul
USC
Missouri
Tennessee
Alabama
western kentucky
UAB

St. louis
Houston
St. Josephs
Nebraska

and two spots ahead of Wyoming.........

When a case can be made that Those schools are historically better than you, I'd just sit down and be quiet. Root in silence.

^ yes, that's if you remove our 2 vacated Final Fours...I have to roll my eyes at that.

Damn, S&C.

I can tell you're the lone Cat in a sea of Tigers.

You went all :boxing::chairshot::uzi: on Memphis' program.

It's like me with Cards fans in the area I live in.

I went to UM, and have had to deal with their filth for years. I'd actually pull for them when UK wasn't playing if it weren't for their fans. If our fans knew how pitifully awful they were, they'd pray for tubbys demise. I hope the suck forever, which they will, and die. (As a program). They're mainly scum, on level with UL. Imagine what you deal with being a UK fan around Louisville people. Now imagine they have no title and one final four. seems funny until it never ends with them.

Memphis isn't a top 25 program maybe top 50. If not for Cal and Rose nobody under the age of 30 would know who they are.

Tubby was the best coach a program like them could have hoped for.

49 hoops programs better than Memphis? well, we will agree to disagree.

we aren't a blue-blood like UK, UCLA, or Duke...but folks know who Memphis is, and who Tubby Smith is...It's a good hire IMHO.

I agree its a good hire. Tubby always seemed to be better as being a big fish in a small pond. He did well at UK but the job was a bit to big for him.
