Tubby Smith has agreed to be the coach at Memphis

just keeping Keelon Lawson (Dedric and KJs father) on staff would help lock up the Memphis kids for Tubby...Keelon won a State Championship at Memphis' Hamilton High, and knows every local HS coach and player.

Tubby has also gotten Memphis kids before...Austin Hollins comes to mind.

If you think Tubby is going to be able to "lock up" anything recruiting related you are about to disappear longer than that last dry spout form 2004.

First of all, you don't need to tell Uk fans about "Tubby Smith's national title". We will tell you about why it even happened.

Memphis will run a clean program, make a few NCAA tournaments (maybe), and thats about it. If you are expecting anything more, get ready for disappointment.

funny, he took Tulsa and Georgia to three Sweet 16s...took a crappy Minn to 3 NCAAs, and an NIT runner-up (and look at them under Pitino, 8-23)...took an 8 win Tech to the NCAAs in year 3...and earned the "Legends of Coaching Award" and the Big XII coach of the year in 2016.

everyone wants to credit the 1998 title to Pitino...but no one wants to credit Tubby with the Elite Eights he earned in years 6 and 8 after Pitino left.

I'd be happy with a Sweet 16 or Elite Eight before he retires here at Memphis.

Wonder if vitale will shout from the rooftops that tubby got a raw deal and it will set the program back ten years when he leaves

Dude, my bad. I forgot we were discussing memphis.

Tubby has advanced once or twice in the tournament since leaving UK. Those elite eights were AT KENTUCKY. That title was with RICK PITINO RECRUITS.

You don't need to worry about what he did here, at Georgia, or Tulsa. Thhose days are LONG gone. Like I said, you might make a few tournaments. I guess thats what your program is good for. Congratulations.

Cal is doing great, btw. He says hi. The secretary made me a snow cone yesterday while we looked at highlights of Bledsoe and big cuz.........I had tigers blood flavoring........it was great.

I see 'adult swim' is over...have fun kiddos, watch out for warm spots in the pool.

Anyone who doesn't get the secretary and snow cone comment, Memphis fans trash cal relentlessly, saying he robbed "their" recruits, lied to the city, and took everything including the snow cone machine and the secretary.

They still talk about it. Trust me, their fans are getting exactly what they need. A dose of reality. Memphis is a shit program, and now they finally get it.

BTW, in case anyone is wondering, here is Tubby's last 11 years........

Tubby Smith, last 11 seasons as a head coach
214-156 (.578) overall record [19-14 average record]
82-112 (.423) regular season conference record
10-11 conference tournament record
NCAA appearances: 6 (3-6 record)
NIT appearances: 2 (4-2 record)
Points per game average: 68.9

Good for Tubby! Memphis? Not so much. I can't believe they couldn't do better than Tubby freaking Smith. If this hire was made 10 years ago, i might have thought it was a good hire. Today? Nope! The man knows how to coach. Coaching won't be his problem. He will win some games with the weak conference he is now coaching in. He will most likely even take the tigers to a few tourneys during his time there. If you expect final fours, you can forget about it. The man just doesn't know how to recruit, or doesn't care to even try. I'm not sure which, but if you can't recruit in college basketball, don't expect to eat at the big boys table. Surely the tigers could have found a young coach with upside? At 3 million a year i never want to hear the same ol bs about Tubby being a great man that doesn't care about money. He obviously cares a great deal about money. Who doesn't? We all do. To pay Tubby Smith 3 million dollars a year to coach your school? My god! Pastner was even worse than i thought. Good for Tubby! I'm just LAUGHING OUT LOUD at the tigers.

Memphis isn't a crappy job like TTU...Tubby's first 14 seasons:

343-120 (.741)

NCAA record: 27-11

Actually, Memphis is a pretty crappy job these days. Calipari taking it because he had to makes your fans feel like it's a higher profile job than it is.

Theres a reason you were turned down 7 times before having to ask a first time bum to take the job in Pastner.

theres a reason you just hired a washed up 64 year old coach on his way out.

"Theres a reason you were turned down 7 times before having to ask a first time bum to take the job in Pastner."

I agree, no one wanted to follow Calipari...Pastner was correct during his first press conference at Memphis "I guess I'm a little crazy to follow coach Calipari. I mean, I want to be the guy who follows Josh Pastner" (he thought it was real funny...he got blank stares from the media and fans)

but he was right...

You will find out in time. I hope Tubby does ok, but I have a feeling we all know where this is headed.

If Tubby wants to get off his butt and rectuit Memphis hard he might get a top 25 team put together. That is a big if with the way he recruits but I will say he is a better coach then Pastner.

I'm just waiting for Tubby to say they are going to press more. That was the universal blatant lie he vomited up every year at UK.

Yup i remembered that every year about his pressing and uptempo lies etc... Memphis fans will demand an uptempo offense etc...

I like Tubby. I also think it's a step up from Tech. Except for blue blood schools, most schools would be happy with Tubby. I'd like to play Memphis off and on. Then again, we'd probably smash them most times.

Tubby is a coach who takes teams and makes them decent. And I mean that both ways. He took Tulsa, Georgia, Minnesota and Texas Tech and took them from bad to decent. He also took UK from greatness to decent. I expect him to make Memphis decent too.

I personally think it's a great hire. People didn't like his style of play here..but he's a great defensive coach and he can get a lot out of 3 star players. Memphis is a much better job than tech with a lot more local talent. He should do pretty well.

I wasn't a huge tubby fan while he was here, but I've always found great irony in the fact they don't want to give him credit for the 98 title bc it was Rick's players...yet I don't know if Rick would have won with that team...I've never understood why they haven't put more heat on pitino for losing the 97 title then...you know considering he had all the same and better players on that roster. Tubbys 98 tourney game against Duke was one of the best coaching performances I've still seen...coach K could not organize whatsoever.

It's a good hire for you guys.

You might be right. Rick winning in 98 is absolutely not a given. 1997 should have been won, but we had lingering injuries. Tubby did out coach K by a mile.

That was a loooong time ago. Tubby had UK, and he was younger, with great players left by another coach. It is what it is.

People in Memphis like to see a team play fast. They've been dying for it since the Cal days, and even Pastner is faster than Tubby. All of my Memphis friends want to know when asking me

1. Can he recruit....
2. Does he get fast with certain recruits.....

Seriously, what would you tell them?

He'll get them to the tournament...

I'm not sure what the big deal about him moving from job to job is...why stick around? He's not some young pup with 8-12 years to kill trying to build a program...

Last time he stuck around somewhere he was ran out...he probably realizes he left here about 2-3 years to late...after that last elite 8 he probably should have seen the writing on the wall and rolled out...no shame in it...

Coaches should move around more often than they to...especially older guys who have been at a place for a while...whether they've accomplished great things or not...too many stick around and go stale and that isn't good for coach or program...

.

Some embarrassments of UK fans in this thread. Yeah lets argue about how bad Tubby was again. You got to have some damn good time on your hands.

I think this is a good move for Tubby. He will likely do better as a big fish in a smaller pond.

Why fight tooth and nail to just be a bubble team in a power conference when he can probably be a regular tourney lock in a second tier conference.

I hate to agree with someone named "cardsfan", but this is exactly the detail people are missing. Why do you think Memphis had to hire Pastner last time? Tubby is a good hire for a team that needs to stop the bleeding and set the foundation going forward. It even took Cal 6 years to get Memphis to a Sweet 16.

Memphis had a good run in the 80's and 90's for them, although they only reached 1 final four. After Cal left his last 4 years they only lost 1 conference game and reached 2 elite 8's, final 4, and sweet 16. If the best they could have done after that was getting Pastner, no way they could have got better this go around. Memphis has lost 24 conference games the last 3 years, Cal lost 25 in 9 years. Memphis is a worse job than it was when Pastner got it, Tubby was a homerun for them and the best they could have done IMO.

Memphis has 3 Final Fours (73, 85, 08), 6 Elite Eight's, and 11 Sweet 16s....I'm seriously not concerned with the NCAAs vacated records as Wiki, ESPN, CBS, etc all show Memphis' full NCAA record.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/history/_/team1/6587

It's not exactly UK or UL numbers...but, The 70s feature an NCAA runner-up with Gene Bartow and Larry Finch...the 80s have a Final Four with Dana Kirk and Keith Lee...in the 90s Larry Finch returned as coach to lead Penny Hardaway and Elliot Perry to a Sweet 16 and Elite Eight...and of course what Cal did the 2000s

Memphis basketball has 4 decades of success, and is a known hoops power/name...we are much more than John Calipari.

I didn't mention the 73 title as it was before my time and had no memeory of it. I just remember when they were in the old Metro and played UofL yearly. Yes you made a finals in the 70's but missed the torunament more than you made it.

Honestly you ask kids today about Memphis and they will say Cal, and this is coming from a UofL fan. These kids today could careless about the past. A current UofL player was asked whose his favorite Cardinal of all time. The kid said Fransico Garcia, point being most today could care about the past in the 70's or 80's.

As for getting a young coach, what young coach would want to come there? You guys went that route with Pastner last time and seen how that turned out. I think Tubby is the right hire, he will have excellent success for Memphis there. He will win the AAC a few times, get to tournment, and maybe get a sweet 16.

^ oh, I agree...we tried the young 'up-and-comer' thing with Pastner...he was the Arizona wunderkind who spent a year under Cal learning the shady side of recruiting Memphis...it worked pretty good for 5 years (130-44 record) but the last 2 seasons were very underwhelming...we also had a mass exodus of players the last 2 seasons...I wish him well at GT as he could have held our feet to the fire over his buyout...he gave us the 'velvet divorce' we all wanted with GTech.

Tubby is still riding his disappointing and average tenure at UK to many unearned riches.
He will likely disappoint the Memphis fans.
