Tubby Smith has agreed to be the coach at Memphis

Wasn't it 2adulters who said that he knew Tubby personally and Tubby told him that he was going to finish his career at Texas Tech? Well, so much for inside information. Take it all with a grain of salt.

I think Tubby is trying to maneuver his way back to UK again. Cal jumped from Memphis to UK. Tubby is following the same course.:D

Cal,"Tubbs, I'll see what I can do but you know as well as I do that UK isn't for everybody"

Memphis has tried the 'young up-and-comer' thing and we were lucky to get a "velvet divorce" from Pastner with GaTech.

Tubby has an NCAA title, and has taken 3 different programs to NCAA Sweet 16s...he took an 8 win Tech team, and had them in the NCAAs in year 3.

in 2016 he earned the "Legends of Coaching Award" and was named Big XII Coach of the Year.

64 isn't old.

just get Penny Hardaway or Tony Madlock (former Tiger, experienced asst coach) to be your first chair asst coach.

Pastner's a tough act to follow.

Any Memphis talent sticking around should be rewarded nicely with an NCAA matchup with you know who, in the first 2 rounds.

Tubby will get enough talent to win games in the AAC. Much like a Rondo landed in his lap at UK, he will get some solid players from the Memphis area to land in his lap. @015 class had 3 memphis area players 2 in the top 100 and the other top 150. 2013 class 3 Memphis area players all in the top 60. So that's 6 four star players right in your back yard, and if all have stayed (not sure if they are still there) will be on this team.

No he won't win a national championship or win games like a UofL or UK fan expects, BUT in the AAC he will win some conference titles and advance to the 2nd weekend of the NCAAT every once in a while. Also with Uconn looking to leave the AAC will get that much weaker.

They have to win first....at least one...

just keeping Keelon Lawson (Dedric and KJs father) on staff would help lock up the Memphis kids for Tubby...Keelon won a State Championship at Memphis' Hamilton High, and knows every local HS coach and player.

Tubby has also gotten Memphis kids before...Austin Hollins comes to mind.

My thoughts is that's the idea behind this hire. Let Tubby handle the X's and O's and let the Lawson guy get the area talent. I think he will do very well at Memphis, to good a coach not to do good in the AAC. He won't do Calipari good at Memphis, but he will do very well.

Tubby could do really well at Memphis if like others have said he would hire a great recruiter. Heck I would take the Texas Tech job myself. I love the state of Texas. Just wonder who Texas Tech will go after ?

3 million a year! Five years

Pretty much doubles what he was making.

I don't see OTS getting down and dirty in the Memphis recruiting/AAU scene. Seems like a bad fit.

Who do you think Memphis could have got? What direction could they have went?

I hate to agree with someone named "cardsfan", but this is exactly the detail people are missing. Why do you think Memphis had to hire Pastner last time? Tubby is a good hire for a team that needs to stop the bleeding and set the foundation going forward. It even took Cal 6 years to get Memphis to a Sweet 16.

CUSA? is Tubby going to MTSU?

the AAC features UConn, Cincy, Memphis, Temple, Tulsa, SMU, etc...CUSA has uh....um....er...yeah!
Yea.. your right AAC.. Which is several teams from CUSA.. Bout the same thing.. It'll be a lot easier for Tubby to win in that league than the Big 12. Which is why he's bolting.. I actually think he'll do very well.

If he was smart, he would go grab Penny Hardaway to come be an asst. He could really help with the recruiting in the Memphis area, and around the country for that matter.

Penny has never recruited a single day in his life. There is no way of knowing if he could be effective. Tubby needs to keep Keelon on staff, and you can't have a staff full of coaches that arent recruiters with OTS as the HC.

Atleast memphis fans won't have to put up with flash cards now. Just the tubby bug eyed stare

Power 5 to me is a football thing. The National Champion just came from a non Power 5 conference.

Oh but in the future it's going to mean everything. When this breaks into a traditional power 4, anyone not a part of it will essentially be D2. The money will all be with the powers. The shifts just started happening in the last 5 years. It takes time to fully take effect.

First of all, you don't need to tell Uk fans about "Tubby Smith's national title". We will tell you about why it even happened. Keep those stupid talking points for the memphis org board.

Memphis will run a clean program, make a few NCAA tournaments (maybe), and thats about it. If you are expecting anything more, get ready for disappointment.

His press conference was so tubby. Same stories same false hope. He said he had to get out there and start recruiting. Lol

also, hiring Penny could be a disaster as you need to keep Keelon happy. You might end up with a staff full of non recruiters, and let me tell you, Tubby can't recruit worth a damn. You need a PROVEN recruiter that tubby lets lose.

Get ready for the real meaning of "walking in memphis".

Just don't see this as a good fit, hope I'm wrong.
