Tubby Smith and GG Smith couldn’t do it, but with a new coach High Point is going dancing

Tubby has been gone for years and yet people on here still take shots at him constantly. He still comes to our games and still gives money to charities in Lexington. Tubby has one Championship which I believe is the same number Cal has. Did Tubby ever get beat in the first round by St Peters or Oakland?

But the question is - Did Tubby make UK better or worse?

And the age old question if Tubby could've won a title without Pitino recruiting and developing should be answered now, considering how much of a failure he was post-UK.

If not for UK, nobody would know his name nor would he have come close to cracking into a final four. But many praise him like he walked on water cause he was a nice guy. Nice guy, yes. But a good Div-1 coach, no.

Most overrated coach in NCAA history.

Tubby greater than Cal

Tubby did really well at Tulsa and Georgia. I also don’t believe Pitino wins that title in 98 because he knew the talent void he left and didn’t have anything else coming in….long term Pitino would have regrouped.

He did very well until his last two years.

John Vincent Calipari would like a word sir.

Every UK coach has 1 title except for Rupp.

Cal and Tubby have nearly the same win percentage overall and in conference. And one had waaaaaay more talent than the other.

Tubby never missed a tourney. Cal missed TWO. If it weren't for 2009-2012, Cal wouldn't have near the accolades.

Both coaches have given tons of money to the Commonwealth, but Tubby has always been more gracious to the fans. Every player Tubby had has spoken highly of him and a lot of player's parents have said he was tough but would have never thought a bad thing about Tubby Smith.

Hating Tubby Smith says a lot about someone as a person, and none of it is usually good.

I'm not so sure I would say Tubby is the most overrated coach in history.

In my mind, Jim "eat yer boogers" Boeheim sits at or near the top of that mountain. Put Roy on the Mt Rushmore of over-rated coaches too, get him a coca-coler while we're at it. Hell, I'm tempted to put Dean "holier than thou" Smith and his UNC** squads chiseled in stone on that mountaintop. With the talent for all those years and considering how much cheating went on, how the hell did he not win more titles ? Calipari deserves his face chiseled on that mountain too, if you ask me. CCC - great recruiter, hella bad at x's and o's and in game coach ultimately proved to be a failure (with his one and done philosophy as well as results, considering the talent he acquired here )

At least Smith won with Jordan
and Cal won with Davis

but I could have done that too.

For my money, Smith, Williams, Calipari and Boeheim sit atop the mountaintop of most overrated coaches ever. That thought might surprise and even be scoffed at by some. But it's my 2 cents.

Smith and Boeheim I agree with. Cal too. Roy not sure. But all had mega talent for years and less titles than they should have.

True. I could understand ole' Roy not being on the list, but my disdain for UNC** needs outlet. Put Alford up there instead of Roy, I'll be satisfied with that. 😉 Honorable mention Tom Crean, but that would have to mean he was actually RATED as a coach, at some point, to be OVER rated (right?) Maybe when he was at Marquette ? on second thought .... naaaaah

Tubby inherited Oz. Cal inherited a dumpster fire and had to start from scratch. Not really a fair comparison, but if you insist on comparing, how many final fours do they have? How many different programs have they each taken to the FF?
Also, what's the head to head record between the two?

Come on, I get you like Tubby but comparing him to a legitimate coach that's taken multiple teams to the FF isn't worth arguing about.

Talk to me when you do.

And he was gifted a title.
Have to disagree with you on this. Pitino might win it all in 1999 or 2000 if he got his type of recruits, but I think that 98 team loses to dUKe in the Elite Eight with Rick. Tubby was gifted a talented crew, but he pushed all the right buttons that postseason. He could never recruit that type of talent, but he sure made the most with what he had, especially in 1999 and 2003-2005.

As much as I can't stand Ol Daggum. The man has 3 titles. More than anyone not name K, Wooden, or Rupp in CBB history (tied with Calhoun and Knight). Hard to call that overrated

Dean Smith I agree with. Bastard waited until he beat Rupp's all time wins to retire. And he was a cheating POS.

Head 2 Head is closer than you think it is. Cal's winning percentage is like .774 and Tubby's is like .760. Some of you forget how BAD Cal sucked in his last 5 years. Their SEC records are damn near identical. Cal's is like .752. Tubby's is .750.

And remember. Cal has Top 5-10 draft picks nearly every year. It's no question in my book who did more with less.

With Cal it's all or nothing. We've seen and experienced that. Technically, Cal has only taken one program to the FF four. Us. His other two were vacated. Now, granted, that's probably not fair, but that's what the record books say like it or not.

Yeah, anyone ranking Tubby over Cal just hates Cal a bit too much IMO. A title and 4 final fours is more impressive than a 1 title and 1 final four. It just is.

It's all about national titles and final fours here.

I'd rank them 1. Rupp 2. Pitino 3 cal 4 hall 5 Smith

If someone wants to rank hall ahead of cal fine but I give him the edge due to the 4th final four. I don't think 1 and 2 are up for debate.

He won it with a team Pitino couldn't win with. Point of fact, the '97 team was stronger than the '98 team. But Smith lead the '98 team to the most dramatic finish in NCAA tournament history, while Ricky flamed out in the Championship.

Calipari comes to my mind as one of the move overrated. Guy couldn't win without top tier talent, and that didn't change at UK.

Stop it with the most overrated coach in NCAA history.

Tulsa has 4 Sweet 16’s in their history. He has 2 of them.
Georgia hasn’t been back to the Sweet 16 since he took them there 30 years ago (1 of 2 in their entire history).
He took Minnesota the furthest they have been in the tournament in the last 35 years.

His inability to get past the Elite Eight those other 3 years at UK is obviously a big let down. Regardless of what anyone thinks about 1998, he was the coach that brought home a title.

Was he a great coach? No, bit I don’t hear many people even trying to argue that. Was he a good coach…absolutely.
