35 year wind down?Tubby was winding down. Good for High Point. Always nice to see a school make their first ever dance.
Talk to me when you take 5 teams to the tourney, and have a title.35 year wind down?
Talk to me when you do.Talk to me when you take 5 teams to the tourney, and have a title.
With all backups they subbed in all 5 bench guys with 15 mins left down 15 and never put the starters back in.15 down to a 12 point win is a hell of a swing.
With Tubby sitting behind their bench for an added TV storyline. Bank on it.High Point expected to be a 13/14 seed type team might be Kentucky's 1st round opponent
But the question is - Did Tubby make UK better or worse?Tubby has been gone for years and yet people on here still take shots at him constantly. He still comes to our games and still gives money to charities in Lexington. Tubby has one Championship which I believe is the same number Cal has. Did Tubby ever get beat in the first round by St Peters or Oakland?
Gifted a title? Lemme guess. He just rolled that ball out huh? The fans that crap on Tubby but kiss Cal's ass are the worst.Talk to me when you do.
And he was gifted a title.

And the age old question if Tubby could've won a title without Pitino recruiting and developing should be answered now, considering how much of a failure he was post-UK.
If not for UK, nobody would know his name nor would he have come close to cracking into a final four. But many praise him like he walked on water cause he was a nice guy. Nice guy, yes. But a good Div-1 coach, no.
Most overrated coach in NCAA history.

Yep; and the headlines will be Can Mark beat his former coach's last stop? With Tubby sitting behind their bench for an added TV storyline. Bank on it.
No one is gifted a title. Do I think the players started leading that team, yes.Talk to me when you do.

Smith and Boeheim I agree with. Cal too. Roy not sure. But all had mega talent for years and less titles than they should have.I'm not so sure I would say Tubby is the most overrated coach in history.
In my mind, Jim "eat yer boogers" Boeheim sits at or near the top of that mountain. Put Roy on the Mt Rushmore of over-rated coaches too, get him a coca-coler while we're at it. Hell, I'm tempted to put Dean "holier than thou" Smith and his UNC** squads chiseled in stone on that mountaintop. With the talent for all those years and considering how much cheating went on, how the hell did he not win more titles ? Calipari deserves his face chiseled on that mountain too, if you ask me. CCC - great recruiter, hella bad at x's and o's and in game coach ultimately proved to be a failure (with his one and done philosophy as well as results, considering the talent he acquired here )
At least Smith won with Jordan
and Cal won with Davis
but I could have done that too.
For my money, Smith, Williams, Calipari and Boeheim sit atop the mountaintop of most overrated coaches ever. That thought might surprise and even be scoffed at by some. But it's my 2 cents.
True. I could understand ole' Roy not being on the list, but my disdain for UNC** needs outlet. Put Alford up there instead of Roy, I'll be satisfied with that. 😉 Honorable mention Tom Crean, but that would have to mean he was actually RATED as a coach, at some point, to be OVER rated (right?) Maybe when he was at Marquette ? on second thought .... naaaaahSmith and Boeheim I agree with. Cal too. Roy not sure. But all had mega talent for years and less titles than they should have.
Which is what greatly coached teams do.No one is gifted a title. Do I think the players started leading that team, yes.
Tubby inherited Oz. Cal inherited a dumpster fire and had to start from scratch. Not really a fair comparison, but if you insist on comparing, how many final fours do they have? How many different programs have they each taken to the FF?Every UK coach has 1 title except for Rupp.
Cal and Tubby have nearly the same win percentage overall and in conference. And one had waaaaaay more talent than the other.
Tubby never missed a tourney. Cal missed TWO. If it weren't for 2009-2012, Cal wouldn't have near the accolades.
Both coaches have given tons of money to the Commonwealth, but Tubby has always been more gracious to the fans. Every player Tubby had has spoken highly of him and a lot of player's parents have said he was tough but would have never thought a bad thing about Tubby Smith.
Hating Tubby Smith says a lot about someone as a person, and none of it is usually good.
Have to disagree with you on this. Pitino might win it all in 1999 or 2000 if he got his type of recruits, but I think that 98 team loses to dUKe in the Elite Eight with Rick. Tubby was gifted a talented crew, but he pushed all the right buttons that postseason. He could never recruit that type of talent, but he sure made the most with what he had, especially in 1999 and 2003-2005.Talk to me when you do.

Also, what's the head to head record between the two?
Come on, I get you like Tubby but comparing him to a legitimate coach that's taken multiple teams to the FF isn't worth arguing about.

I have an uncle who thinks Crean is a better coach than Tubby.
He won it with a team Pitino couldn't win with. Point of fact, the '97 team was stronger than the '98 team. But Smith lead the '98 team to the most dramatic finish in NCAA tournament history, while Ricky flamed out in the Championship.Talk to me when you do.

Arizona shot 41 FTs to our 17. I am sure that had nothing to do with it.
