Trust the staff with Mintz.

Has nothing to do with Ryan Harrow, I do not know how good he is but Coach Cal must have seen something or he would not be coming to Ky.
My point was and is, do not get your hopes too high and expect things from this kid that he can’t deliver on.

I think the key to his success is by how much the Cats do NOT need him to be great. If the freshmen are true studs (especially Boston and Clarke), and Haarms brings toughness and inside presence, and Brooks and EJ take the next step, and Askew can be a solid starting PG...then the Cats just need Mintz to play a Dominique Hawkins or Mulder role. Asking or needing more of him may be where the Cats run into some trouble.

I see Mintz in a similar role as Sestina: leadership/experience off the bench. Now if Askew struggles, we may need him to be a little more than that. Hopefully Askew is ready to be our main PG.

Whitney, Juzang, Vanderbilt, Diallo, Green, Wynard, etc. The list is long and now you want us to trust the staff? I hit no problems getting him, but so far Reid was the only one that helped us very much. I am in wait and see more, but trust in staff 100%? Nope.
Did your mother drop you on your head when you were a baby, now you just can't see anything positive? Cal has signed a couple of guys that turned out ok

Why even try to explain something to someone who can't grasp it? You can't cure stupid if they aren't willing to at least try

We thought we were getting Quickley back...EJ & Johnny too.

We then were left with Askew and Johnny(if no IQ). Didn't feel great about Askew, but a good amount of talent and he could be guided along. Then Johnny leaves. We now have 0 returning scholarship guards.

It's 2 scoring wings and combo guard Devin Askew...and wing Allen on the bench. You'd rather have another high end guy running point to challenge Askew...and now we don't have really any true guard outside of Devin.

Well we then bring in Mintz. He's filling a void left by Johnny as a reserve guard...and also that then bumps Askew into Quickley's role....and Mintz is filling the role of Askew and Johnny. He can fill a leadership void that Nate left.

If Mintz is just a reserve guard? Great and I trust the staff, but he's not good enough to be relied upon for big minutes. He's like a Fresh Kimble or Darius Perry for UofL...great if he's a reserve..but not the guy for big minutes.

When he played big minutes at Creighton, his analytics were awful. He was one of their worst players. "But he scored 9.7 points a game!" He scored 9.7 points on 8.2 shots per game....shooting at a 41% clip from the field. He missed an entire season, they were better without him. He was healthy enough to come back....but the coach and him knew he wasn't really good enough and would hurt their current rotation.

Here's the 2 things I'll trust the staff on

1. They think Devin Askew is special and will handle the point just fine. Mintz will be a good backup

2. They have their eyes on another player to come in and compete with Askew to play point.

But you can look at the numbers and watch their games...Mintz just isn't a guy that can win a title playing big minutes. He's a good locker room guy and good reserve, he's not good to play big minutes.

Did your mother teach you to respect others and not to judge, lest he be judged and insulting people that have different opinions is not nice?

Good student. Had a 4.5 grade point average in high school and offer from Yale.

He led the Big East in assist to turnover ratio as a sophomore. How could his analytics be that bad?

The people who don’t like the Mintz pick-up (minus the obvious trolls) are those who believe every team should have 13 Top Five recruits.

That’d be great if games were 400 minutes long and teams averaged 600 shots. But in the real world, it is an unsophisticated and unrealistic way to construct a team.

Dude, you’re always insulting people. Stop whining like a little schoolgirl.
You started this crap with me. I am discussing UK basketball on a forum, I never called you out, you hurled insults at me. If you think I am whining, then you need to re-think that. You may disagree with my takes and that is fine, but when you and others resort to insults, you lose. Be an adult, act like an adult. Stop acting like you are in the sixth grade. Once again, you strike at me, expect returning fire and if you can’t handle it, stop insulting other posters. Nobody agrees 100% of the time with everybody else. You need to learn what adversity is.

As others have said, the list of amazing players dwarfs the list of disappointments, but even your list of busts is pretty crap.

Juzang was a good player who actually fit really well in Cal’s system and that I would have loved to see return.

Vanderbilt was amazing, he just got injured.

Diallo is an NBA player who finished his college season as a very respectable defender and with good stats overall.

Green was a great shooter and a good player for us, he just wasn’t a good point guard fit for Cal’s system, but he’s still going to be a solid college player elsewhere.

Wynyard was recruited as a bench player from the very beginning. He was recruited over every single season. It’s silly to call a player a whiff by the staff when he’s the lowest ranked guy on the team and the staff is filling his position with superior players every year.

So, basically your list is Kahlil Whitney. Amazing work.
Nice post. The truth hurts some agendas.

It is fine to have different opinions, it is fine to be negative. When you are negative 100 then it throws up red flags.

If being an “adult” means spending my time on a messagboard waxing negative 100% of the time, then no thanks. You should probably take a break. Go out, enjoy life. You may even get laid in the process!!!! Good luck Mr. Negative.

Seems like a lot of you are underwhelmed with the signing of this kid, I get it. But try and give yourselves some peace of mind. There are A LOT of grad transfers out there, and I'm sure there'll be more in the portal as we approach the summer. There are guys with more impressive stats out there as well. With that said, there is a reason Cal and staff targeted Mintz specifically.

I guarantee you this has been in the works for longer than we know. I'm also damn sure that Cal isn't closing his eyes and going after whatever random player his finger lands on. He wants Mintz for a reason.

Trust. In. Cal.
I agree I’m one who question this but I’m not an evaluator of talent I will leave that to the coaches. Hope the young man comes in and contributes right away he sounds like he has the will drive and work ethic

That is only in your mind because that is how you want to see posters that are not 100% pumping sunshine. We could say the same thing about you that you never see a problem with guys leaving for the draft without getting drafted or so many transfers, or that we can never seem to build a stable roster. You are 100% ok with that evidently as you never criticize that. Some of us are not happy with that and state our opinions. Again, I can respect your views on that and we can debate it, but there is no need to insult other posters here.

Evidently you don’t know what acting like an adult is, according to your latest post. Here is some info for you, don’t want to read what I post, skip over it or put me on ignore. Calling me out with insults will only hurt you in the end.

Cal plays the best player.

Quade was ranked higher than SGA, Quade eventually gave way to SGA.
Did he start at Creighton? I have never concerned myself with who starts, but more so who is one the floor in crunch time.

If we get Haarms and return EJ, our depth situation suddenly looks pretty elite.

Mintz, Allen, Fletcher, Brooks, Jackson, and Ware off the bench. Even if three of those guys don't pan out immediately, you still run a legitimate 8 man rotation.

Would EJ returning hurt us with Haarms, ya think? Honestly not sure which guy would help us more, EJ or Haarms.
