Top 3 Candidates After Cal?

200.gif

My first choice would be Frank Vogel. I know a couple of boosters whom would have influence that also would recommend Vogel. Doesn't mean barney would listen.

After that there is no clear, easy choice. It's going to be several years before Cal leaves so someone that no one is even thinking about right now could emerge as next. I would love to see a legacy coach at UK. But they need to win something first. I had hopes that Pel would be that guy. But he's not. I had hopes that Travis Ford would get to a FF somewhere then get a look here. Seems that ship has sailed too.

There's some really good young coaches out there proving themselves now. Cal turns 65 next month. I've always thought he's coaching until 70. There's a good 5 years for someone to emerge.

Someone young.
The UK job ages you in dog years.
Cal looks bad!
But I guess it depends on if you’re winning.
Saban had a more stressful job and is older than but looks much younger than Cal.

Throw NIL in with the stress that’s already there and you need young blood.

Nobody's list is going to look the same. The only coaches people would agree on wouldn't come to UK or start coaching again (Wright, Hurley, Stevens).

The fact no one can agree on even a short list of replacements tells you finding a good coach to replace Cal will be tough and a little bit of a gamble. I'm fine if people want on from Cal, but you can't deny there's some risk involved.

Saban does not look younger than Cal. Period. And Cal acts way younger. Saban is very grandpa like. Cal is not

Nobody ever seems to come up with a couple home run replacements. Cal was a sure fire hire.

Cal’s a tough act to follow and he combines a ton of attributes.

Self and Pearl could step in and win plus handle the high profile.

I kinda like Gates at Missouri but it’s a gamble. Dusty May as well.

Cronin is feisty enough to hang in. Beard? Willard? Ford? Still like Pel and Padgett. Pope is doing well and a terrific person. Maybe roll with him?

Jay Wright and Dan Hurley probably aren't options, so:

If Cal retired after this season...

1. Scott Drew
2. Tommy Lloyd

If we get another 3+ seasons of Cal, add these names to the watchlist:

1. TJ Otzelberger (Iowa State)
2. Lamont Paris
3. Mark Pope
4. Danny Sprinkle (Utah State)
5. Dusty May (strong IU ties, but worth watching)

I’m waiting for someone to say, “Pitino on a 3-5 year stint.”

Nobody wants the UK job, nobody wants the money, nobody is leaving their current job, nobody can handle the stress of the fans, nobody this, nobody that…

Did I cover all the Erin’s excuses why nobody is coming to UK after Cal? We might, with an emphasis on might, get a failed washed up High School coach, but I’m not even sure then! Or is that setting my sights too high, Erin’s?

He said after Cal, so it's kind of impossible for it to be Cal. So your post, as per usual, is a bit redundant.
And it doesn’t matter who we get as we will get an immediate improvement to actual coaching and game management. Recruiting is another story and remains to be seen how that will go but cal is one of the worst in the game today when it comes to actual coaching. No need to reply, that’s my opinion and I know you don’t agree and that’s fine.

2. Tommy Lloyd
It's funny you mention Tommy Lloyd, because if you go read Arizona fans' thoughts on him this year those thoughts mirror exactly what UK fans complain about with Cal.

  • Lloyd has himself an Edwards situation on his hands with Kylan Boswell. The fans are pissed he's starting and getting so many minutes while playing horribly. To the point where I've heard "If Boswell starts next game Lloyd needs to be fired."
  • They complain about Arizona coming out flat and not acting like they want to be there.
  • They complain about awful three point defense.
  • They complain about how every game some random player on the other team has a career night and how Lloyd never makes adjustments to stop him.
  • They lost to a 15 seed last year.
I think Lloyd's a good coach, but I think if he came here people would realize the grass might not be any greener.

Arizona fans would trade Tommy Lloyd for Cal in a heartbeat.

How about we wait until Cal leaves to have this discussion (for the 2,000th time)? Last year it was Musselman and Oates who were the obsession of the posters here.

Mark Pope?!?! Seriously? If that dude didn't go to UK everyone would laugh at that suggestion.

Pat Riley, Dwayne Casey, Brad Stevens, Erik Spoelstra, Billy Donovan...any other nonsensical names you want to throw into the mix?

Cal isn't going anywhere. 400 wins, $40 million to buy him out! Who's gonna pay that, fakefans? Best coach since Rupp! Look at all the draft day banners!

Waited too long so the best, would have been Dwane Casey.
Vogel, Pope, or Tony Skinn. In my opinion, for many reasons, we have an opportunity with the first two to bring back the Kentucky and Winning Championships focus that is badly needed with Vogel or Pope. If Barnhart or whoever is hellbent on not hiring someone with UK connections, a young very respected, and up a comer, then I offer Tony Skinn.

Pope has never won a conference championship, a conference tournament, or an NCAA game. He's 51 and has been a head coach for 9 seasons. Outside of the fact that he went to UK, please tell me a) how he is championship focused and b) even remotely qualified for a place like UK.

Vogel underperformed in LA and has been a complete failure so far for PHX. I like him but again, if he didn't have UK ties, nobody would be naming him as an option.

This is bonkers land talk.

1. Why?
2. Couldn't do it at Texas.
1. Good coach, good guy. Has worked his way up.

2. He has Marquette looking solid.

I can't see many other names out there that would immediately jump ship for UK. Hurley certainly isn't coming here since UCONN is a good basketball school.

This. I'll never understand the Vogel fascination among some here. There's only one thing on his resume that makes people want him at Kentucky, and that's not even a legit qualification, IMO. Some here actually need to look at, and understand, his HC resume. Hard pass on Vogel, easily.

I'm not sure he is a good coach based on results so far.

And these threads always amuse me. Most of bbn is irrelevant for the new search. It's barnies world and we all live in it.

Erik Spoelstra Is a possibility, he is about to be canned by the Heat. Would he want to work more and deal with kids I don’t think he wants to leave the NBA and someone will pick him up.

What? Spoelstra just signed a 8 year $120 million contract extension. Riley loves him, and rightfully so.

My list is ever evolving. Recently, I have been impressed with the teams of Lamont Paris. I like Mike White a lot. There are just so many good young guys out there but coaching here is a totally different animal. Some people can't deal with inheriting a program that comes with immediate, intense, no honeymoon pressure. Thankfully, Chris Beard will never be hired here. With the pressure, he might start biting people. He would have to be on a really short leash.

Vogel underperformed with a title? Vogel turned Indiana into a great team. He coached at UK as an assistant under Pitino. If there is a slam dunk hire out there right now it's him.
