Top 3 Candidates After Cal?

Vogel underperformed with a title? Vogel turned Indiana into a great team. He coached at UK as an assistant under Pitino. If there is a slam dunk hire out there right now it's him.
Vogel inherited a good Pacers team, did ok for a stretch, then got fired. Was pretty terrible in Orlando, then got fired. He hasn't been bad with the Lakers, but his title was in a bubble, so TIFWIW.

Bottom line, take his brief stint away as a UK assistant, forever ago, and his resume would never be mentioned in this discussion.

It’s looking more likely than not with their contracts that Barnhart and Cal ride off into the sunset together.
I actually think it’s more critical after what has taken place to have an AD that can make good hires, doesn’t over compensate our coaches, doesn’t get burned alive on contracts, and knows when to send The coaches packing for under performance.

And it doesn’t matter who we get as we will get an immediate improvement to actual coaching and game management. Recruiting is another story and remains to be seen how that will go but cal is one of the worst in the game today when it comes to actual coaching. No need to reply, that’s my opinion and I know you don’t agree and that’s fine.
Yeah being ranked 10th in the country sucks

1. Dan Hurley
2. Brad Stevens
3. Frank Vogel
4. Mark Pope
5. Scott Drew
6. Billy Donovan
7. Tommy Lloyd
8. Nate Oats
Out of the 8 names you mentioned, only Lloyd is a contender. And I don't expect he would leave the west coast or a very good program like AZ.

Uconn is a blueblood and Hurley has a championship there already. He isn't leaving, except maybe for Duke.

Brad Stevens turned down 10 mil per year from IU, where he actually has ties. He isn't coming back to college to coach.

Frank Vogel had 2 of the best players in the NBA, along with several other very good players and got himself fired. His championship came when they were in the covid bubble. I also don't think he has any interest in coaching CBB.

Mark Pope has never won squat and his teams are usually pretty avg.

Scott Drew has been at Baylor 21 years and has 1 F4 to show for it. It was during the very bad covid season. He has never won the big 12 tournament, and has only shared the big 12 regular season title 2 times. Hell no! The tournament before his title he got bounced in the 2nd rd. The 2 years since his title have ended in the 2nd rd.

Billy Donovan is not coming back to college. He has turned UK down twice, and he is almost 60. Very doubtful he comes here now.

Nate Oats has never been past the sw16 and recruits some very questionable young men and seems to not care that he plays someone potentially involved in a murder because "wrong place, wrong time". Again, hell no!

With Barnhart AD I have to agree. He’s lazy and goes for easy hires, overpays, and keeps coaches too long when they start failing.

The question was who do want after Cal leaves? Simple.
Ignore that poster. He claims he was threatened with a ban for being too anti-Cal (when in reality it was probably just because he's a condescending ass most of the time) so he's just been posting sarcastic, over the top fake pro-Cal things.

Is Jeff Goodman a mod? I hear he’s been threatening to send people to jail 😳

Cheering too much, jail. Cheering too little, jail. You are charging too high prices for scalped tickets, you right to jail. Complain too much about Cal? Believe it or not, jail. Don't complain enough, also jail. Complain, not complain. Buy a ticket to Rupp and you don't show up? Believe it or not, jail, right away. We have the best fans in the world because of jail.

T. J. Otzelberger
Tommy Lloyd

UK may never have a coach again after Calipari. Maybe we should promote Welch afterwards?

Saban does not look younger than Cal. Period. And Cal acts way younger. Saban is very grandpa like. Cal is not
Ok! You definitely have to be related to Cal for that to be offensive.
Does your name start with E and end with N?
Or start with J and end with N?

Nobody wants the UK job, nobody wants the money, nobody is leaving their current job, nobody can handle the stress of the fans, nobody this, nobody that…

Did I cover all the Erin’s excuses why nobody is coming to UK after Cal? We might, with an emphasis on might, get a failed washed up High School coach, but I’m not even sure then! Or is that setting my sights too high, Erin’s?

Flagged for possible Rico sighting.

Last year everyone was crowing for Musselman, LOL

Goin for the ride and will see what happens!

Just find somebody who is great at the Xs/Os and who has a vision for what they want to do.
Oh, they should also have the personality to be a great recruiter while also having the ego
to want to be in the spotlight all the time. All while having no skeletons in the closet.
There should be lots of guys like that, right?

Erik Spoelstra Is a possibility, he is about to be canned by the Heat. Would he want to work more and deal with kids I don’t think he wants to leave the NBA and someone will pick him up.
He signed an 8 year, 120 million dollar extension just this month. They even waited until his divorce was finalized to do the extension so that he wouldn't have to include that in the divorce.

He's as safe as they come.

When the GM personally trains you for the coaching job you're probably pretty safe.
If the GM is Pat Riley then you are also likely pretty good.

Scott Drew would be my 1st choice. Does he even want to leave Baylor? He's a made man there, with zero pressure.

Lloyd is probably my 2nd choice. But again, does he want to leave Arizona? They've been a contender each year under him. Maybe he could do better at UK. But he seems set up to have all the success he wants at Arizona.

If both of those guys say no, I think Sean Miller is the 3rd call, and he probably takes it.

1. Mark Pope
2. Shaka Smart
3. -

Someone who I'd want but has a 0% chance: Billy Donovan.
I'm very pleased to see these names recommended. As between these two, I'd prefer Shaka over Pope ... but not by much, and I wouldn't be disappointed with either one.

1. Good coach, good guy. Has worked his way up.

2. He has Marquette looking solid.

I can't see many other names out there that would immediately jump ship for UK. Hurley certainly isn't coming here since UCONN is a good basketball school.
If we ever get to the point where we have to hire mark pope UK basketball is screwed. Ever took a peak at his tournament resume? He is not the one. Being a good guy actually kinda hurts him. He can't do this job.

My first choice would be Frank Vogel. I know a couple of boosters whom would have influence that also would recommend Vogel. Doesn't mean barney would listen.

After that there is no clear, easy choice. It's going to be several years before Cal leaves so someone that no one is even thinking about right now could emerge as next. I would love to see a legacy coach at UK. But they need to win something first. I had hopes that Pel would be that guy. But he's not. I had hopes that Travis Ford would get to a FF somewhere then get a look here. Seems that ship has sailed too.

There's some really good young coaches out there proving themselves now. Cal turns 65 next month. I've always thought he's coaching until 70. There's a good 5 years for someone to emerge.
I don’t understand the fascination with Vogel. I know he was at UK before and had the one championship with the lakers when they had all that talent but what has he done since then? Is he even coaching now? I haven’t looked him up recently, just really wondering
