Just a random thought while waiting to fly home on a Sunday.

Tom Izzo passed Bobby Knight for the all time Big 10 wins record (thank you for that) and he’s having a big comeback season after some middling years.

But my question is when Izzo does hang it up in a few years do you think Oats takes the job or stays at Alabama because it’s always been rumored that he wants the MSU job when Izzo retires.

Honestly, if I’m IU I sit down with him, pass him a blank check and say “ fill in the numbers”.

Going from Fred Flintstone to Buzz Lightyear at Mich St?

Talk about a culture change!😆

Oats will end up with MSU. Hes been waiting that job out for a few years now. I know people that know him and they all say the same thing.

And I hate it because hate the Spartans and their fans.

That’s my assessment too but I also wonder how much longer Izzo wants to go and if someone like IU made just an obscene offer would he jump.

I can understand taking the UNC job over UK.. and I'd even say IU is near us based on history and their fanbase.. but I just can't see MSU being all that desirable after Izzo leaves. I wouldnt leave Alabama for that, especially if it's true that he doesn't want to leave for his kids/divorce/whatever.

The people who know say he wants to coach at MSU. That’s his dream job.

Really.. Michigan St? Does he have ties there or something?

I mean he turned down Kentucky which is a better job for a lot of money. Is MSU going yo offer anything close to what we were?

Did UK actually ever offer him the job? I thought the alabama buyout pretty much turned that option away for UK.

I thought it was Drew and Hurley and then Pope.

Oh that may be the case. Still, I have to imagine someone had relayed to him what sort of pay range to expect from UK. And it seems he just didn't have much interest at all. Or maybe we had no interest in him? But I don't believe that part

I thought only Hurley and the Baylor coach were offered the job. When was Oats offered?

That could be true but I think Oats still must have had an idea what this job would pay. And as I'm recalling.. he never gave much inclination he wanted the job, so maybe we never offered.

But.. there had to be some conversations. Someone had to have put a call out to Oats or his agent at some point.

You said he turned us down. You can't do that without being extended an offer. Kentucky never even showed interest. The fact you said it as fact was quite impressive though.

Yeah I remember that and based on some other stuff I’ve read the last couple of years makes me think he wants to be Izzo’s heir at MSU. It’s obvious he holds Izzo in the highest regard.

Wouldn’t that be a culture change from just the on court play style!

if oates and pearl realize how important it can be to have one of the best teams in the country be your rival, that you play 2-3 times a year, they wouldn’t go anywhere. not if ff’s and championships are what they want. when it comes to fortitude for winning, you can’t put a price on the proximity to that kind of competition and what it can do for you in march.

not only is it the best league, but it’s the best head to head going. it won’t always be that way, but for right now, it just feels like one of them is going to the ff, and will probably have a great shot at a title. you’re only going to get 2-3 years of that level probably, but you don’t leave that.

on the other hand if you’re a huge ego coach, why stay somewhere where you can’t get most all the glory in the state, and be the power guy for a historic blue blood. i could see oates cashing in, but imo it’d be a mistake to move anywhere just yet.

The SEC and the Big 10 are in a Cold War so this idea of the SEC will be this or that for all time isn’t what I see. I see two superpowers who will throw hundreds of millions of dollars at football and basketball and when one looks like they have an edge the other will come right back.

And no offense Football will always be king at Alabama. One down year or two and people will forget all about it. Hell this is a pattern for Alabama Basketball I’ve seen play out for the last 40 years albeit Oates got them to a FF. But a couple of early exits or middle of the road conference finishes even great coaches have from time to time Bama fans will lose interest.

Tom Izzo made Michigan State basketball king at that school. I think based everything I’ve read and know about Oats he’d go especially when they have two billionaire donors who have an open checkbook.

i never said “all-time”. not even close. where you getting that? i said if he wants to win right now, he needs to stay. you can throw all the figures you want. he’s in position right now to secure a top notch resume for decades to come. if he gets another ff at a football school, he’ll stay in demand whether he fails or not in his next position.
