Time for Honesty

Confused What The GIF by Sesame Street

Only got to watch the highlights but KY dodged a bullet the way things ended up going after the season maybe they can strike lightning twice with Stoops too. Win or lose this season will be magical for all BBN. We will never be out of a game with a team full of basketball players who can shoot

Who felt like last night was a breath of fresh air after being in a septic tank?

And who besides me either laughed out loud or had a big smile on their face the way these guys played???regardless of who they played
It was not a breath of fresh air. It was getting our Kentucky basketball program back if you only followed Kentucky basketball when the former coach was running things and you never had Kentucky basketball under Coach Rupp, Coach Hall, coach Sutton, Coach Pitino or Coach Smith, then you don’t know what Kentucky basketball is all about. It’s about winning and it’s about playing team basketball

Coaching changes are scary moment for some people. These people do not like change or fear the unknown.

I believe Pope is the man to lead us for the next decade. His style of play will almost certainly keep the top kids coming. Change can be scary but it can also awaken the sleepy giant.

I’d have to think if any top kids watched that game they would like playing that style.

Should be easy to recruit shooters now
This I just can't imagine a stud high school player who wants to play on the big stage in a free flowing offense not wanting to come and play for Coach Pope. If they come they will make the NBA. They don't have to play for Cal which is a myth. 95% of those guys were going to the NBA regardless of where they played college ball at.

Great thread. I've been thinking about these things quite a bit since Calipari left and Pope was hired. I think BBN collectively sold its soul to some degree when Calipari came on board. I'll be honest, I was desperate to win, and almost at any cost. We all disliked Calipari at Memphis and thought his antics and his recruiting spiel was shady and dishonest, and almost slutty, selling to the NBA types who are more interested in that league than in UK or representing the Commonwealth.

But when Pope came out and started talking at his introductory presser, it was almost like a revival for me. He loves Kentucky and it is obvious. He has a history with UK and he cares about the commonwealth. He wants his players to appreciate, respect, and play with passion for the University, because that's who he is and that's what he plans to teach them.

I think I had forgotten how I felt about Kentucky back in the 1980s, 1990s, and into the 2000s. It wasn't just about the names on the back of the jersey. It was about the name on the front.

Fast forward to last night, it was just a confirmation and continuation of those feelings. Guys playing their hearts out and leaving it all on the court for the team and the university. Yeah, I'm all in with Pope. I'm not expecting miracles but I won't be surprised to see Pope have a tremendous amount of success, even starting in year one.

Calipari was about winning when he came and had a great balance between both goals. After 2015 it became more and more about his own legacy of helping NBA players and not about the school or his own record. I don’t know why but it was evident. After that 2018-2019 season it went all downhill.

Got to watch the game this morning thanks to BWO. Reminded me of the 90's when Rick was coaching. I love that we have a real coach here now, going to be a fun year.
I have a question about Rick’s coaching style, as I was still very young when he left the program. In terms of his interview style/motivational approach, was he complimentary and uplifting of his players the way Pope seems to be? Or more “old school” like Cal where he usually found something to critique?

I’m guessing this is more of a feature of Pope’s personality and maybe a way coaching is changing generally, but I was struck after the game on Wednesday when Cameron Mills asked Pope if he saw some things to show his guys on film where they messed up and can improve. Pope responded something along the lines of, “you’re going to hate me for this but I’m going to focus on the positive tonight. I was really proud of the way we…” etc. It was a breath of fresh air and I bet the players appreciate that too.

Literally the first play of the game I was ecstatic. Dump-down pass into Amari, and Carr slides through a screen set by Oweh for an easy 2. A set play for a layup! I've missed having those the past 15 years.
And first play of the second half, a backdoor lob to Oweh for the lay-in. Easy buckets to start each half. Fun to know that as the season goes on and they get more plays ironed out we’ll see more of that.

Pitino was exceptional at motivation and game preparation, especially in March when it mattered most. He usually had the opponent scouted so well, UK took away most everything the other team was good at. His weakness, I think was in game adjustments, when things didn’t go as planned. He always talked about things they needed to get better at, like most coaches. I noticed what your saying about Pope only talking about the positives and I would guess that players do love that!

Kids will play for money. They are professionals now. The sis-boom-bah school spirit days are over. Well, they were over long ago, but the body is underground and the leftovers from the wake have been thrown out.

There were plenty of Cal seasons that I enjoyed. The combo last year Reeves/Rob/Reed was as fun to watch as anything in years.

That being said, there was always a cloud hanging over, at least since 2015. Always a feeling that Cal would revert to form.

I don’t feel that way with Pope. This is what we are going to do. It’s going to be fun. We should keep getting better and better at perfecting this style.

Not sure what the outcome will be, but I plan to enjoy the journey.

Great answer, teams hated to play UK when Pitino was coaching and Pope looks like he may just bring that back.

It threw me for a loop.

Where are the contested, fall-away 19 footers as the shot clock expires?

Where was the dribble handoff weave?

How come no one dribbled a hole in the floor while the other 4 guys watched?

Where are the 7-foot, 140lb big guys?

Why did we play zone a few times?

What’s with all those 3s?

Why weren’t we force-feeding the post?

How come we didn’t play Garrison, Williams and Carr together?

I felt like I was watching some UK basketball from the 90s. Is that allowed?

Yes. Strategy was used. Thats smart and key to winning.

It felt like the 90s again. One of the best feelings.

Even if this team loses in the NCAA tourney, it will be fun as hell watching them.

The players under Pope plays so loose & free. It's like we've had an elephant sitting on our chest for the last 20 years. Now the UK players & the BBN can finally take a deep breath of refreshing air. UK basketball is fun again.

As much as I love his passion (his fuel), I value his intellect for the game, understanding BBN and his authentic devotion to deliver what he knows BBN desires above all else ... winning at a high level.
