Auburn Interested In Sumral

Boy, the Hugh Freeze hype train derailed in a hurry. As we all know, success as HC at one place does NOT ensure success anywhere else. Hiring a HC who turns out to be a winner is, at best, a 50/50 flip of the coin. No one was super excited about Stoops being hired but he's done a solid job. Likely he's plateaued and should turn the reins over to someone else. But no one is a guaranteed winner at UK. No one.

Stoops has too large a buyout, no other school wants him (ex. Cal) so we are stuck with him for a few more years. We should just hope he can turn it around next year and we get to another bowl game, it’s going to be tough sledding. IMO

Need to stop with the buyout being too big. Schools wouldn't make buyouts that big if they didn't have the ways or means to work something out. The number could be negotiated down based on performance. The amount will likely be paid out over a period of years as well. And if you bring in somebody making roughly half the amount he was making (as somebody like Sumrall would be initially) then you have some of those dollars that would have gone to Stoops via salary freed up. Just pointing out that people need to stop panicking over his large buyout number. There are ways to get it done if push comes to shove.

It's time for Stoops to move on. Let's hope someone actually comes after him in the offseason. The time to bring Sumrall in is NOW! We wait and he goes to another school and we keep Stoops for a few more years. At that point UK has most likely missed it's opportunity. If he goes to Auburn and has success, I don't see him leaving to go back to UK. This is a move that schools make in the SEC who place winning at the top of the priority list. Of course, the "loser's mentality" section of the UK fanbase will still want to keep a coach with barely above a .500 winning percentage because "we just can't get anyone better". Those people need to get over it. If you're serious about winning, you find a way to make this happen.

believe buyout to just go to another school is 4 million owed to UK. the buyout if UK were to fire him is 44 million.

either way it doesn't matter because the shine has worn off. nobody better will want him after the past 2 years

Auburn is not getting rid of Freeze, he will at least get one more year . Auburn has the 5th best recruiting class in the nation coming in next year, along with flipping Deuce Knight a highly rated QB from Notre Dame. Auburn still has room to move up even more, they won't take a chance losing any of those commits by firing Freeze now.

Mitch isn’t pulling the trigger on Stoops and he isn’t going to another school. We have him for another season and that is going to be a Fact, all the moaning and groaning isn’t going to do anything but give us acid reflux. I would love for him to step down but he isn’t and everyone knows it.

I could see auburn jumping in if we sit on our hands too long. I think both Jon and his wife’s family live near the area. He has built a reputation down in those areas. I would think he could do really, really well recruiting at Auburn. We need stoops to take that early buyout as soon as possible if that auburn job is going to open up.

You do know those kids are committed to AU because they have a booster willing to spend more money than everyone else. That has always been Freeze's recruiting tool. He is a whiney fellow who can't be trusted. Not sure they would lose anyone as long as they NIL didn't change with a new coach.

The big thing is they fired their last coach after 2 years, if they fire Freeze after 2 years who would be willing to go there.

I think your first sentence is true, but I'm not sure the rest of it is true. You can just hear it in his voice. You can see it in his mannerism's. Something is different. He's made a ton of money at UK. He's doing well in his business venture off the field as well. I would not be shocked if he and Mitch worked together and negotiated a buyout paid out over time and put out a statement together.

I don't think it's as clear cut as you think it is.

Thank you. There are about 5 or 6 on here that just keep saying it over and over again. Maybe they want him to stay. lol

Appropriate it's Auburn since they are the ones Stoops used as leverage to get the extension. I would think the but for Hugh wouldn't be much less

I think Auburn will give Freeze at least one more season.

I think AU money guys are tired of paying buyouts. They paid gus 25m+ not sure what they paid Harsin and would owe Freeze about 40m. So near 100m in less than 5 years. Plus they are spending big on this class, 20m+.

I think it's unlikely that Auburn or UK fires its coach (though I'm hoping for some negotiated departure here b/c Stoops seems like he's done). It would be a major bummer to lose our guy to Auburn.

Heard someone on KSR say that Stoops will probably use this two-week period to decide on the future. And these Sumrall rumors just prove he will not be on the market long. UK's window to be in on him will be very small.

I have to believe Stoops is toxic after the aTm circus. No school is going to want him after that fiasco, optics would be terrible.

This.

I sense something is off with him outside of loosing. Would not be surprised if he stepped down at the end of the year.

He doesn’t look great either, definitely doesn’t look like someone who is enjoying coaching and it seems to be taking a toll on him physically.

Coaches expect to be successful. CMS is making a little over 9m a year. He gets fired and the clear number one guy is Sumrall, who likely has an agent, most likely Jimmy Sexton. Do you think he comes for 4.5m a year when he is being considered for 2-3 other jobs. Napier, who had roughly the same resume is making 6m+ and on the verge of being fired. Arkansas will be looking, maybe a 2nd Petrino run. But Sumrall will likely have a small buyout, and he might come for less than CMS is making, but I don't think he will come for half what CMS is making,

I still put it at a 90% chance Stoops steps away. I think he will take this week to really gauge some key players and see what they are gonna do and then he most likely steps away. Coaches almost never stick around when it gets super toxic and that's exactly where it is heading next season. My biggest concern is that Mitch doesn't hire Sumrall and gets some dead beat like Brad White and were hit.

I think if Stoops let Mitch know ahead of time he was stepping down and Mitch could get most of the feeling out process done by the end of the season with Sumrall, we could make the move fast. This would allow us to keep a ton of the talent on the team and coming in. I also heard it referenced the other day that we have about as big of an NIL pot for this coming year as we have ever had. Mass exodus plus the money to replace them, this is the absolute IDEAL time to make the change.

I bet he would.

I bet he would.

Maybe he would i don't know him, but starting pay in SEC for no head coaching experience is that. His and Napier had similar resumes and Napier is 7.2m. Kirby is a UGA grad, an no head coaching experience, but he didn't short himself on Salary.
