Throwback: Who remembers the Matt Jones/Marc Maggard saga?

Marc asked me to help him start TrueBlueKentucky. I was to head up the FREE information side of the page while he set up a pay side. I hesitated because I already knew he was hard to get along with, but I did it and we ran the site much like this one in its format.....ala.....this message is on a free board but the House of Blue is the pay side. I, with his blessing, would occasionally leak pay side information on the free board. We reached 3,000 members as I remember, most of them free side contributors. Marc had contacts into UK like no one since. Antigua would tell him just about anything surrounding the program and its recruiting. I traveled with Marc to Orlando for the WideWorld of Sports tournament and while I drove he was constantly on the phone with guys like Jim Calhoun, Billy Donovan, Herb Sendek, etc. He knew them all. BUT, all in all, it was an experience shot through with frustration since Marc would often post misinformation. One VERY positive thing about that board......there was a policy of no degradation of the program or each other. It was civil, way more than other like venues. I soured on everyday posting when TBK started losing ground because Marc disappeared. In those days, Jones hadn't cracked the ice to get the type of information Maggard got.

Matt Jones may not have had the sources. But he had the platform. KSR, then, wasn't quite what it is today, but it was still the biggest online fan site, and the most popular. That's why I have a hard time believing UK decided to run a misinformation campaign and asked the tiny TBK website to lead the charge.

I can see UK asking media to keep some information under wraps, but asking Marc to go around being #wrongonpurpose about Eloy Vargas made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I was off work when the 'Cal to UK' thing happened and just so happened that I bought a 10 day membership to Maggard's site maybe one or two days before it all shook out. He def had sources, at least at that time.
I was on his premium page the day the deal happened and it was like being in the room with some of the dealmakers. By contrast, this site was deleting posts that were passing along info from MM's page. As a result this page was a good 2 hours behind all day long.
Nearly wore out my F5 button!

BTW, if any of you are truly missing MM (I never had a problem with him), his old TBK podcasts can apparently still be heard on iTunes LOL!

My memory isn't what it used to be but I still have some random stuff that seems to stick in my head. I've probably spent more time conversing with my fellow cat fans on here and the previous versions of this board then I have with a bunch of my family.

Didn't Rainman leave when they took the Cats Pause name to another site (scout?)? Smokey Pearl had a bunch of different names (I believe BoilerMax was one). I remember him taking about a daughter in the WNBA all the time and maybe some posters said something about that and set him off. I think he started bashing us on other sites. I am not sure 100% on the story though.

I was a regular premium member with some good access inside of TBK in those days. Man recruiting info was so much better. Not just Maggards contacts, but the guys he recruited to the original roundball were awesome as well. Guys like Brooks Hansen etc.

The saga with Jones was just Maggard trying to gain the edge by explaining Jones isn't really the same type of "expert" his site (TBK) was made to be. I never had a problem with either until Jones started lying about recruiting info he clearly couldn't get and Maggard turned into one of the biggest aholes I've ever seen in message boards.

Those days were the best. Constant entertainment.

Heh-heh. Great thread. Yeah Maggard actually had great info for a while. He knew all the behind the scenes happenings of the Terrence Jones recruitment every step of the way.

I'll never forget when he put up fake info on a guy we were supposedly recruiting to see if Jones would put it on his site & sure enough he did. Freakin classic.

Then suddenly he decided he didn't want to do it anymore and stopped posting for a couple months before finally shutting it down, takin the lifers' $500 and providing no product. It takes a special kind of ass to pull that crap. He had so many people plastering his social media sites with complaints that he changed his name to Marc Billingsley. Does wedding photography now. I wonder if he charges $500 for the weekend and once he gets his money, he just disappears after a couple hours.....

Too bad Spears isn't around (officially) to weigh in on this. Good ole Frosty Tips was fun to kick around while he was here. My favorite was when Maggard claimed that Eloy Vargas was prohibited from playing for UK due to some SEC rule (which he never cited to), and that Kenny Paine would not be joining the basketball staff. Then when he was wrong, it was because he was "wrong on purpose" and that he fell on the sword for the "good of the program"

Man, those were the days.

I was barely out of HS knew very little about basketball and would throw out theories about recruiting and other things, and while I wasn’t always wrong, I never knew what I was talking about. But more than once Maggard would boost my comment with fire emojis and suggest I was onto something he had info on. Dude was just way too ate up and even as a teenager I remember thinking he was a goof.

KSR was awesome back then, it’s nothing like it was then now. I understand why Matt sold it but it lost what made it great.

I was a mod on tbk. Oh me some of the things killed me. Like being wrong for the program. Bunch of who haw. Pheonixcat and Nj were the people in the know in my opinion. I still keep in contact with them. They still provide lots of info. Nj called Cal to here when mm was not. Jones was and is a joke. He would not just steal mm info but he steals everyone's.

Can verify this. Knew someone who was a photographer for UK and he even had his photos stolen from Jones. MJ is just lucky enough to build his steps on people who were nice enough to let it happen.

Edit: MM was a turd. He doesn’t fall in the “nice enough to let it happen” category. But plenty do. Matt Jones is a piece of the worst kind of $hit. Matt Jones is a weasel that has taken advantage of everyone he has ever known. Why else would this talentless blob have the stage he does and be able to promote morons like he does. His friends is his next stepping stone… as long as they are dumb enough to not even be a step then they stay his friends apparently.
