While browsing Twitter today, two Star Wars (I am a huge fan) bloggers that I follow, who both have credible sites, were fighting like cats and dogs, accusing one of stealing info and not crediting the other. However, it seems to be occurring more often between the two and I couldn't help but be reminded of the Matt Jones/Marc Maggard feud. Who here remembers that ordeal? It was around ten years ago if I remember correctly and for me personally, it provided a lot of comedy. I remember checking KSR back then to read disses against ole "Frosted Tips" more than for UK insight. It was also discussed quite a bit on this board and was related to the recruitment of some players (Patterson/Lucas, Eloy Vargas, etc). I just figured I'd see if any other RR members recall those "good ole days" lol

I was a regular premium member with some good access inside of TBK in those days. Man recruiting info was so much better. Not just Maggards contacts, but the guys he recruited to the original roundball were awesome as well. Guys like Brooks Hansen etc.

The saga with Jones was just Maggard trying to gain the edge by explaining Jones isn't really the same type of "expert" his site (TBK) was made to be. I never had a problem with either until Jones started lying about recruiting info he clearly couldn't get and Maggard turned into one of the biggest aholes I've ever seen in message boards.

I remember it.

From what I gathered, Jones stole a lot of "premium" info from Maggard and Maggard convinced a bunch of dolts to give him money to get inside scoops on the BCG recruiting trail. (WHAT AN HONOR!!)

Then Matt went on to do what he's doing now and Maggard had the Mexican comedy thing and the bar in Bowling Green or something. Have no idea what happened to that dude.

He's a wedding singer in Nashville, I believe. Heard he's doing well.

I was in my first year of posting when that happened. Maggard just had the look of an asshole and con man. He used to post on here and probably still lurks. Always giving people a taste then demanded them to pay. Still can't believe people were that naive to pay for that.

I thought maggard was doing wedding photos now.
Either way, he lost that particular war.

One of my favorite sagas ever.

Too bad Spears isn't around (officially) to weigh in on this. Good ole Frosty Tips was fun to kick around while he was here. My favorite was when Maggard claimed that Eloy Vargas was prohibited from playing for UK due to some SEC rule (which he never cited to), and that Kenny Paine would not be joining the basketball staff. Then when he was wrong, it was because he was "wrong on purpose" and that he fell on the sword for the "good of the program"

Man, those were the days.

The thing is, it was cheap as hell. I think I payed 7 bucks a month for most of the time. And the information was extremely good. Maggard was a scout for college basketball coaches and had great contacts around the AAU scene. Then he pieced together connected guys from other programs and around the country. He worked for Pearl, Matta, Donovan etc.

I'll never forget the poythress recruitment when Hansen thought he had the goods and was telling the board poythress to UM was close to a done deal. He went on to say he wouldn't be wasting a trip for nothing and was going to the announcement for his site memphisroar. Maggard laughed and said something along the lines of " lol....LET'm drive."

Long story short Brooks was turned away at the door by the coaches and poythress committed to UK. Maggard had the best info I've ever seen. And I can't stand the guy, so I'm no fan.

Oh I agree with you but he was an ass. He came across in such a horrible way that people finally got turned off. He could of been good had he gone about it a different way.

Who all bought a life membership from frosty tips and frosty tips Jr

Hi Jr

He was connected and even more so when Gillespie was here. He was really close to the assistants and I believe Jeremy Cox in particular. I became very skeptical when he started offering $500 "lifetime memberships." Seemed like something someone would do that was about to take the money and run.

I was off work when the 'Cal to UK' thing happened and just so happened that I bought a 10 day membership to Maggard's site maybe one or two days before it all shook out. He def had sources, at least at that time.
I was on his premium page the day the deal happened and it was like being in the room with some of the dealmakers. By contrast, this site was deleting posts that were passing along info from MM's page. As a result this page was a good 2 hours behind all day long.
Nearly wore out my F5 button!

BTW, if any of you are truly missing MM (I never had a problem with him), his old TBK podcasts can apparently still be heard on iTunes LOL!

I try not to.

Having been involved in a few, I can say first hand that internet/message board/chat room feuds are ridiculous and not worth the time and effort, and is just a bad look for everyone involved (including outside observers that jump in and take sides).

Man, those were the days.

Haha holy crap I forgot about "wrong on purpose"

I won't go into specifics but just before maggard started his infamous site he was popular here and seemed okay. At the time I was a part-timer in marketing on-line businesses (I was successful at it but decided later it wasn't what I wanted to do full-time and needed to go full-time to make the dough I wanted to make.) and contacted him...he kind of laughed me off with some full of himself comments and I promptly dropped it. The funny part was, I wasn't going to charge him a dime. I was going to assist him because he seemed to be a UK fan. (I still have the emails.) The last company I worked with went from about 50k a year to near 500k about two years later. (I charged a small percentage as I was perfecting the techniques.) Just an aside but I always laugh about that as he had a heck of a chance to have it made....he made some bad decisions all-around and they seemed to compound quickly at a certain point....

Was Maggard the one who scammed some people on here over cars or something? Or was that TCCAT? My memory just ain't what it used to be.....

OT~ speaking of TCCAT, yall remember the Randolph Morris commitment when TC was texting "secret info" from the Taco Bell crapper when he ate sliders and got the shits? [roll][roll]:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: now that was classic!!!

For a couple of years it was high entertainment. Jones obviously won this particular war. His sources got stronger and Marc went on to the life he's living now.

"Wrong on purpose" will and should live on in infamy.

Though Marc did get Jones really good once towards the end of everything. Never forget Maggard planting the fake Mamadou N'Diaye "scoop" to see if Jones would rip it off ... and he did. A lot of people got a good laugh from that one.

I was a mod on tbk. Oh me some of the things killed me. Like being wrong for the program. Bunch of who haw. Pheonixcat and Nj were the people in the know in my opinion. I still keep in contact with them. They still provide lots of info. Nj called Cal to here when mm was not. Jones was and is a joke. He would not just steal mm info but he steals everyone's.

He just wanted to make sure everyone was "Respecting your Program!!!!1!1!!!"

Was the dumbest thing I ever saw. But he was scouting some of those prospects, so I guess as far as business goes he was playing it smart. He also used that slogan and was hostile to lots of opinions because he wanted his site to be the alternative to Rafters.

Jones has the same attitude toward UK fans though. Just as arrogant and smug, he's just got a personality to manage it without most of his followers realizing he thinks you're trash.

:joy::joy:

One of my first memories from this board was the good ole days of TCCAT posting recruiting updates from Taco Bell :joy:

I appreciate all these posts and stories recounting this particular era of UK fandom, fond memories for sure. This feud certainly etched its place in history among The Door, Perry Stevenson's pop tarts, the South American point guard, and all the other things from that time. Although the late Tubby/Billy G period was far from our best basketball-wise...it sure provided a lot of entertainment.

You forgot the "I ran into Ramel Bradley" and the guy selling knockoff jerseys at Applebee's.
