This team needs to have a zone defense in its Arsenal !

Thanks, it was just an eight grade tournament........but we weren't supposed to win.
(one of my 8th graders started varsity the next year)

Hey coaching is tough at any level and for you to get everyone on the same page to win a tournament in a short time is great.

Its like Cal not spending more time scouting our opponents. He chooses to focus on his team and play sctrictly man-man.
Playing zone would be about changing things up on our opponent. Say for instance they go on a small run and you switch to zone. It forces the other team off balance and requires them to run a different offensive set.
As other posters have already stated, being one dimensional is easier to prepare for. Zone in situations would have certainly helped us in previous yrs. However, Cal won't abandon what got him there (man d) despite an opponent knowingly struggling against zone.

Someone posted that they didn't play zone at the next level {NBA}. If I'm not mistaken the NBA does allow for zone defense. If its been disallowed it had to be just recently.

I've been wrong before, but could you explain how Duke proved me to be wrong? Just curious

K tried man last year, and they ended up getting beat down in a few games, he switched to more zone, because it fit those players better, and Duke won a natty.

I watch a lot of college basketball, and I watch as a fan of the game, not just a cheerleader. I firmly believe had we played some zone against Whisky, we would not have ended up with Booker trying to guard Kaminsky and we win that game, easily.

'Cuse plays man D as often as we play zone and they are still putting guys in the league'

....BINGO!! That's my point....if Cal is so overly worried about prepping players for the next level, it shouldn't matter if he has them play zone at times while they're at UK.

...I'm not sure.....don't really watch NBA, but I do recall a few years ago that there were calls for 'illegal defense' if a team appeared to be in a zone rather than man to man.

Yes, I remember at one time they would call an illegal defense. I think it was about 7-8 years ago or maybe longer they allowed the zone defense and I thought it was still being used.

Maybe someone else has information about this. Thanks for replying to my post.

Adolph hated playing zone, too, but he hated losing, more. The 1-3-1 saved his bacon on many occasions.
