The wild wild west of NIL

Duke did a really good job of buying a championship team this year. Must be nice.
well, they don't actually HAVE one yet.....soon we'll know....

I AM curious about all the other blueblood programs tho.....seems like UK, KS, UNC, UCONN would all have just freaking open checkbooks for NIL. Is UK finding that the money isn't as fat as it should be? UNC is certainly feeling that.

i find it interesting that y'all think ESPN might be the money behind duke......why them? i'd say there' more of a chance it would be behind UNCHEAT...

color me amazed at the flow of money.....but not surprised....

Duke has more money than anyone not BYU, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, or Stanford. With NIL, I expect Duke will now dominate every year. Kentucky needs more billionaires.

For all we know it could be Adam Silver. The Nosfaratu looking Duke alum who has ruined the popularity of NBA Basketball would love nothing more than to dabble as running CBB.

The Dook Mafia didn't like hearing how UConn had run the last 25 years of CBB so they are out for their revenge.

Anyone know any hedge fund billionaires that are UK fans? How about Russian Oligarchs that are UK basketball fans? Sounds like that is the recipe for future success.

Are you guys not reading the article linked? It tells you exactly who is funding Duke basketball. 3 hedge fund billionaires mainly but also Coach K created a fund that is a 1 million dollar minimum donation.

What makes you think that? Aside from the Crafts I am not sure Ky really has any big donors. I think we are going to have to get used to just being Ky and a blueblood is not going to suck in the top talent anymore. Its all about money now and unfortunately we are far from the top if some of these donors at other schools really want to buy wins. I hate to say it, but if we want to compete year in and year out we might have to do like Mark Stoops said and pony up lol. The fans might have to kick in 10-20 bucks a year or something or whatever they can afford.

Having said that I feel comfortable that Pope can win with a lot less than Calipari and several other coaches did, so we do have that.

I hate what college basketball has become. Kentucky is a rural somewhat poor state so I can't see how this (NIL) is going to be good for the success of Kentucky basketball. We simply can't outspend the schools with connections like Duke, UConn, and others. Our NBA guys would probably be more likely to support their former coach than Kentucky. Pope did a super job getting marginally talented players to have a good season despite the devastating injuries. Kentucky's future success may depend on great supporting role players, Kentucky native players who play for the name on the front, and a star or two, with Pope's system and love for Kentucky. Kentucky simply can't outspend other top programs.

Ky has more big donors but UL gobbled them up while mitch held back coaches from doing anything with collectives. Once he finally came around, a year late, no one was left.

Better hope the crafts finances stay good. Without them we're insanely cooked.

I don't buy that if they were true Ky fans willing to donate that kind of coin to the program they sure as hell didn't give it to Louisville.

Hate to say this but…….and they ain’t that young .

Who cares. The money spends just the same. UL didn't wait. They gathered up everyone they could.

Exactly. Even beyond financial issues, death could be a major disruption. They probably set up a trust or something but who knows how long those funds would last.

Diversification is incredibly important. Instead of cultivating new relationships, even for athletic department donations, Mitch has just rested on his laurels for years, over relying on the crafts.

Duke’s 3 freshman alone cost over $6 million, with a total team cost probably north of $10 million!

These same 3 billionaires are the ones behind Zion and others, but now it’s legal! With those 3 (and others to a lesser extent), Duke will buy their way past UK and UCLA in due time, and there’s nothing anyone can do but watch.

Mitch probably would have been gone a long time ago if not for the Crafts .

It was reported that “chicken man” had promised to buy pretty much any player that Cal wanted. But Cals lost out on several of his top targets. Wonder what’s going on there .

The only thing I can think of is, the Tyson family started writing checks, and they soon realized besides watching their investments get bad coaching, there was actually no return on their investments!

I don’t care how rich you are (unless you are one of the 3 billionaire nerds bankrolling Duke), you are not going to continue to fork over $5-$10 million a year on a few dudes trying to put a ball through a basket, with nothing in return except for court side seats and an invitation to the team banquet at season’s end.

For the last couple of years everyone was saying AJ Dybantsa was a Cal lock . I was told he was as much of a sure thing for Cal as MKG . But somehow he ends up at BYU ? Things that make you wonder.

You want to know why he went to BYU. This is why and I am not sure I would have offered even half of that to come to Ky. You don't have unlimited funds to drop on 1 or 2 guys. We saw how much injuries played in our season this year. I would rather have 8-10 really good players than 1 or 2 studs surrounded by a bunch of flunkies.

AJ Dybantsa is reportedly set to make around $7 million in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals at BYU, including a base amount of $5 million and additional earnings from deals with Nike and Red Bull.

Right, but “chicken man” proclaimed he would pay whatever it took to get Cal the players he wanted. I fully understand our position. I’m just wondering how Cal and chicken man missed on that one .

Doesn't Cal have Jerry Jones and Walmart backing too?

“Supposedly “ at least that’s what some people say. But I absolutely saw a video with chicken man saying he would provide Cal with any amount he needed to for a player he wanted. (I’m paraphrasing here).
With the money of all 3 he shouldn't be missing on any recruit since it's all about $ anymore.

The difference now is everyone is willing to spend money. UK under Cal got whoever they wanted. This notion they didn’t pay to get those guys is crazy. Cal had big money supporters. Louisville went through it with Pitino and his big money guys leaving. UNC money isn’t sold on Davis. Duke’s money has never waivered with their new coach.

A coaches pitch can’t be this is a great place let’s talk money later. It is money then how great the place is. Kenny Payne made that mistake. Pope has to be careful not to let his love for UK influence his pitch. That isn’t the driving force and never has been. It has always been a $$$ decision.

I do find it funny that the media and most people on this board are giving the title to Duke. ESPN had in an article yesterday that if Duke plays at even 90% of their ability that there isn't a team in the country that can beat them. I guess they must have played below 90% 3 times this year. 🤣

I hope if Houston doesn't beat them that one of Auburn or Florida beats them.

I think Florida matches up better but you know after Duke beat Auburn that the Tigers want revenge. With that said I hope they get taken down by Houston so I can watch the game on Monday without the stress of worrying about another Duke title.

That's not really correct and Tyson is not the only big donor.

Tyson foods has over 37 billion in assets and made over 1 billion profit just last year.

If you had 1 billion $ to invest and got a 25% investment return (not unheard of with that large a sum) you could spend 250K every day of your life and never spend any of your investment $.
With the kind of money he has he could probably spend several Mill a day.

Missed out on players not really and nobody knows what positions Cal needs to fill but Cal and other coaches.
PG we supposedly missed out on well no as of right now we are already PG OG heavy.
One big man 6'9" 225 Morez not sure he could even cut it in a physical SEC could of been like Z and just got pushed around.

You never know really what is going on how much a player need, playing time, completion for playing time can scare people away also.

You just have 200 minutes a game to go around.

I don’t disagree with any of this. And I’m not even talking about the portal. Don’t even try and act like he didn’t desperately want AJ Dybantsa. He had been recruiting the kid for 2 years and he is a generational talent. I know BYU gave him an astronomical NIL package. I just thought Cal with all his big donors would have matched it. He also wanted Caleb Wilson, Chris Cenac, and Mouhamed Sylla . Just surprising to me considering what his NIL should be.

Isn't BYU close to home for him he's playing in Utah.
To some kids that matters, then again the $ figure could of just been to much, we will never know.

You can't pay 10 people millions of $.

Edit Well you can but to many roosters in the hen house is usually bad.

I believe he transferred out there to play for one of those “basketball factory “ schools after BYU got involved. You’re last statement is the crux of what I was wondering. I thought Cal and the Arkansas NIL would be able to do that . Not 10 but several. Apparently, Duke is the only one able/willing to do that.

So one of those schools that buy your mom a house and give them a job.
I thinkAR is still waiting on NBA evolutions and see who they need to tell to hit the portal.

The issue is pretty clear, Kentucky basketball made $33.2 Million dollars last year. The issue has never been that the basketball doesn't make enough money to pay these players, the issue is that the school takes the money that the basketball program earns and uses it to fund other programs and then ask the fans to fund the basketball players. These Universities and the NCAA have been siphoning off all of this money for decades and don't want to turn the spicket off because the rules changed and the sports programs are the ones who take the hit while the administrators all cry about needing donations and money.

Well they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night…
Now they blew up his house too…

Yeah . Not being a smartass because you are a respectful poster but, did you read the article in the OP about Dukes NIL ? Must be nice .

Yes they probably have truly unlimited money.
With that money you can about just bye titles or at least you should be playing for one every year.
