The Fall of Calipari

It's not some fringe....it's lifelong fans he's already lost. Believe it or not, sports is not above everything else for people.

He's undoing his whole time here in one year, and I'm not just talking about wins and losses.

I'm talking about folks who save their vacation days and money to travel all over the country to support UK. They do it because of the passion and love they have for Kentucky basketball. Cal has killed that.

He slowly deconstructed UK to fit his mold and his preferences, all the while talking of the lore and tradition of UK while he did it. The people kind of raised their eyebrow but not much else because the 1st 6 years were magical.

However, the last 5 years have been lacking. His words began to ring hollow. Early tourney exits and losing as much as he won against top teams. Players leaving. Players not playing. Turmoil in the sidelines.

The little things that were overlooked begin to get bigger and the swaggy comments become snide remarks toward fans.

Undoing of Senior Day. Refusal to play home and homes instead opting for neutral site games. Putting players NBA dreams ahead of overrall team success.

This is my longest post in a long while on here, but Cal decided somewhere along the way to make UK his personal NBA tryout team and took the tradition of UK from Top in the country to just about getting to the NBA.

Fans that are not happy and feel their UK of yesterday is gone and that do not like the UK of today, are now labeled as fringe.

Cal's transforming UK and dividing the fanbase has broken something that the point shaving scandal and the probation couldn't do, it's taken the passion away. If that keeps happening, UK is no longer the top of the heap, but just another log in the pile, because this fanbase has no peer.
Bravo. Well said.

Maybe if those same fans weren't so scared of equal rights they'd still be interested. People in this state get so upset when people of color voice their concerns or opinions but say nothing when cops cap a law abiding woman sitting in her home.
Too bad her boyfriend was the first to pull the trigger. I guess you think cops shouldn’t return fire when they are fired upon . She also had been dating a drug dealer. Of course that doesn’t fit your narrative.

Wasn't a shot at you. Was talking about Cal's fundraiser with Henry Cho and Sinbad and co-hosted by Ted Dibiase (RIP) who amazingly Bob Huggins is now resembling.

Wait, DiBiase died...today?

And to add to the OP: most of my friends and family haven’t watched any this season and don’t plan to again. Hell, I haven’t even watched any besides if my son has it on and I walk into the room. I honestly have no plans to watch again.

I wish I could fall in such a manner.....get paid millions for doing nothing. Act a little distressed to fool the stupid and, by some miracle, he wins another title....all would be forgiven.....except for the BLM hate squad.

Sounds terrible

My mistake he's still alive.

This is only my opinion.

After losing to Wisky in 2015, many fans, me included, saw huge coaching mistakes, and thought, if he can't win with this team, he will not win another title.

Many fans became tired of the OAD, when so many were leaving that should have stayed. Constant roster turnover,

Ugly basketball early, weak OOC schedule, cancelling home and home series.

Getting beat in the tourney by weaker teams, due to bad coaching and lack of experience players.

No longer getting top 5 talent, so basically turning UK into AAU basketball.

His obsession with getting guys drafted over winning games for UK.

Slow, steady slide since 2016.

Terrible record against top 25 teams.

Losing the 3 point streak.

Refusing to change offense and defense to better suit the type of players we got.

Not recruiting players with skills such a sshooters, and basketball IQ and skills

Too much rope given to 5 stars and none to bench guys

Too many transfers, because of ^

Last summer, marched with the team supporting BLM, ok, support the players, got it.

Made a video asking all of BBN to support BLM, BIG mistake, lot of fans see them as a terrorist organization

Started out the year looking horrible

Joined the team in kneeling at UF, HUGE mistake, divided the fan base big time.

Too many excuses when there were none

Blaming fans, talking down to fans, arrogant attitude toward fans

If only, he could have been humble, accepted and took responsibility for this mess and told the fans, he would fix it. Maybe would have helped.

But, he doubled and tripled down on the fans, covid, and too hard of a schedule.

Maybe Cal was a victim of his own success early on.

IMO, it is time for a change, for Cal and UK. Would serve them both well.

I have no ill will toward Cal as a person, but I hate what he has done to our program.

Not sure how long this thread will last.
I will never forgive that jerk off for kneeing

I’m ready to keep it going til Cowardpari is gone

social injustice what a joke they where protesting criminals who pulled guns and knifes
on police being shot don't matter what color you are that will get you shot. and a career
criminal oding with enough drugs to kill 3 people. that's just a special kind of stupid.

You lost me after the first line of "If he cant win with.."

Reminds me of the time UL fans said "if he cant win with John Wall he'll never win"

When will people realize that talent alone doesn't win titles? If it was just talent, it would be Duke vs UK every title game.
Son, you’ve been lost. You have absolutely NO CLUE and all you want to do if go against everyone on here to make it seem like you’re the only “true” fan. I wish I could tell you what I really think you are.

Man you must have been reading my mind...could not have stated the facts any better.

If you don't think that happened during the BCG time you weren't paying attention or "forgetting" it on purpose.

You are 100% wrong on this sir, for two reasons. Number 1, BCG never had a season even close to this bad, and number 2, (and this was mostly because of his off-court antics) the entire fan base knew that BCG would soon be replaced. With Cal, we are literally being held hostage while he chokes the life out of our program, and then makes snide, condescending comments about it. It’s sad and depressing.

This post is excellent.

The fault here ultimately rests with the AD for, in the interest of win$ and losses, allowing and reaffirming a coach to believe he was bigger than the program and allowing him to take the program in that direction.

He has done something no other coach or person in the history of the University of Kentucky has been able to do. Something I thought would be impossible. He has made a significant portion of the fan base not care about the the program and lose their passion for Kentucky basketball. I am not sure it will ever be the same again.
I'm not sure it's all Cal but this is a real thing that has happened. Could never dream of how I now feel, or don't feel about the program we grew up worshipping. For me there are other outside factors such as the political influences etc that have played into that but Cals approach to things clearly hasn't helped for sure. Just don't feel like it's the same program I knew.

Truth is, Cal blew it on the recruiting trail last year.He and his staff really misjudged the talent level of this year's team and they are paying the price . Hopefully, some of the guys on this team move on and Cal and his staff can find players who can play at the level expected.

Except it wouldn’t? UK clearly doesn’t have that much talent on this years roster for example.

No one will convince me Cal doesn’t want to win. That’s core to who he is. He won’t change because fans are complaining on a message board, he will change in the ways that he thinks will help him win.

Dude you’re a fool. Literally nobody said Cal would change because of some dudes on a message board. Nobody. You have nothing else to argue and are simply unable to prove any of your points so you gaslight. Weak man.

He is a clown. I’m sure he’s a swell enough guy but he’s petty and intellectually inferior to most around him.

I agree, it is the softest team I have witnessed in a Kentucky uniform. You nailed it. Weak wimps all of them. Especially Askew and Boston.
It could be that they're more concerned with their hairstyle and how they look when they are on the court (jump shots, etc). They have to look good for the pro scouts and getting good clips for their mixed tape.

Sorry if that is harsh. I know I shouldn't pick on the guys, but they ARE the ones on the court playing (or not playing...oops). I'm just really FRUSTRATED!!!

Normally I’d agree but he had the most loaded roster with talent AND experience that CBB has seen in decades, went undefeated all year only to screw it all up in the FF. He absolutely would have found a way to lose to KU in 2012 had there been about 5 more game minutes. His track record of blowing big games goes back to UM. He blew a title for them with an alltime bonehead move as well.

Yeah I know what you mean. I don’t really care about how they wear their hair, but if they are aiming for a good look, they’re shooting blanks.

Look man, I’ve said for a very long time (before 2015) we have a branding problem under Cal. We cannot have turnover every year and remain successful and our marketing pitch as the one and done school is isn’t sustainable long-term. Cal has bandaged it “good enough” to mask the deficiencies until this year. I think it has to be apparent to Cal at this point and I am optimistic he will approach recruiting differently bc i believe he doesn’t want failure at the end to be the trademark of his legacy. All of the other points raise by the OP are ridiculous and the product of a doom and gloom whiner.

And for the record, I can argue all damn day except I’ve been busy with work. No gaslighting here, just not able to sit on my phone sometimes.

After reading this article about the Eyes of Texas and how donors reacted to the woke people of Austin trying to cancel culture it, its really tells a story of what likely happened here after the kneeling at Florida and Cal saying a few days later that the timing of it was bad.

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/03/01/ut-eyes-of-texas-donors-emails/

For those of you that don't think Cal could lose the fan base - the fan base that puts names on buildings at UK that forces the UK administration to intervene , that article frames it pretty well . Below is an excerpt...

From June to late October, over 70% of the nearly 300 people who emailed Hartzell’s office about "The Eyes" demanded the school keep playing it. Around 75 people in emails explicitly threatened to stop supporting the school financially, calling on the university to take a heavier hand with students and athletes they believed were disrespecting university tradition by protesting it.

While those who emailed represent a fraction of the more than 540,000 UT-Austin alumni, their threats had some university fundraisers sounding the alarms.

"[Alumni] are pulling planned gifts, canceling donations, walking away from causes and programs that have been their passion for years, even decades and turning away in disgust. Last night one texted me at 1:00 am, trying to find a way to revoke a 7-figure donation," President of the Longhorn Alumni Band Charitable Fund Board of Trustees Kent Kostka wrote to a group of administrators, including Hartzell. "This is not hyperbole or exaggeration. Real damage is being done every day by the ongoing silence."

Alumni and donors threatened to cancel season tickets, end donations and boycott games. They complained that Hartzell was not forcefully defending the song and school traditions enough, accusing him of cowing to political correctness.

"It is disgraceful to see the lack of unity and our fiercest competitor Sam E[h]linger standing nearly alone," wrote one graduate whose name was also redacted by the university to protect the identity of a donor. "It is symbolic of the disarray of this football program which you inherited. The critical race theory garbage that has been embraced by the football program and the university is doing massive irreparable damage."

Among the donors who reached out was billionaire businessman and alumnus Bob Rowling, whose holding company owns Omni Hotels and previously owned Gold’s Gym and whose name graces a building within the McCombs School of Business.

I agree but he whole heartedly supported and promoted those political perspectives with his team. The BLM commercial and kneeling for the flag to name the big ones. Its on him.

Fantastic post that reflects the thoughts and feelings of the vast majority of UK fans. Well done and thank you

This is how you put a stop to this nonsense. Hit them in the pocket book. Stop sending in donations, stop buying their trademark goods and stop going to home and away games.

Bravo for the Texans who took a stand. When you allow a small bunch of misfits to totally change who you are as a people you deserve what is coming your way. The jury is still out on UK Alum and supporters. Will they rise up like Texans or cower down like one would expect the people on the left coast to do. Is UK Texas or California.

When Calipari pulled his stunt he should have been summoned to the President of the University's office and read the riot act. Instead the president and AD both supported his rude and obscene behavior on the court of an opposing team.

Calipari is a misfit and history will record him as the worst hire in UK basketball history because he will leave with the program in shambles if this is allowed to go on and with the current leadership at UK, it will be allowed to go on.

So hit them in the pocket
