The Fall of Calipari

This is only my opinion.

After losing to Wisky in 2015, many fans, me included, saw huge coaching mistakes, and thought, if he can't win with this team, he will not win another title.

Many fans became tired of the OAD, when so many were leaving that should have stayed. Constant roster turnover,

Ugly basketball early, weak OOC schedule, cancelling home and home series.

Getting beat in the tourney by weaker teams, due to bad coaching and lack of experience players.

No longer getting top 5 talent, so basically turning UK into AAU basketball.

His obsession with getting guys drafted over winning games for UK.

Slow, steady slide since 2016.

Terrible record against top 25 teams.

Losing the 3 point streak.

Refusing to change offense and defense to better suit the type of players we got.

Not recruiting players with skills such a sshooters, and basketball IQ and skills

Too much rope given to 5 stars and none to bench guys

Too many transfers, because of ^

Last summer, marched with the team supporting BLM, ok, support the players, got it.

Made a video asking all of BBN to support BLM, BIG mistake, lot of fans see them as a terrorist organization

Started out the year looking horrible

Joined the team in kneeling at UF, HUGE mistake, divided the fan base big time.

Too many excuses when there were none

Blaming fans, talking down to fans, arrogant attitude toward fans

If only, he could have been humble, accepted and took responsibility for this mess and told the fans, he would fix it. Maybe would have helped.

But, he doubled and tripled down on the fans, covid, and too hard of a schedule.

Maybe Cal was a victim of his own success early on.

IMO, it is time for a change, for Cal and UK. Would serve them both well.

I have no ill will toward Cal as a person, but I hate what he has done to our program.

Not sure how long this thread will last.
Absolutely spot on. Been a fan for 66 years a d. Been on the message boards from the beginning.

This stuff is ridiculous. I hate losing, we all do, but all of these reasons are nonsense. It’s bunch of excuses to whine about losing and complain about our program’s support of BLM. If we bounce back next year, all of this gibberish will be forgotten bc winning cures everything. You speak like this is past tense, well you’re gonna have to deal with Cal for awhile longer so you might want to allow for annual re-evaluations of your reality.
People just don't seem to get why people are upset. I'm sure Cal is thinking and seeing it this way as well. That's why I do not believe he will change.

No one will convince me Cal doesn’t want to win. That’s core to who he is. He won’t change because fans are complaining on a message board, he will change in the ways that he thinks will help him win.

Tell me one thing Cal has changed since '15? Still cries NBA at the drop of a hat. Still talks NBA contracts and money. Still has the Pro day to start the season. Still plays guys who are higher rated while others have to earn it. Nothing has changed and nothing will.
Offense still looks stagnant. Still refuses to play a zone for mora than a possession or two.
Keeps losing good assistants and keeps hiring buddies or former players.
I've not heard or seen anything that indicates he is willing or wanting to change.

I can't speak for anyone else but for me you are 100% spot on about this. During down years for Hall, Sutton, the probation years, the Tubby mediocrity and even the Billy Clyde years I still watched. I got upset at losses. It hurt when we were put out of the tournament. However none of that is true for me anymore. I have became so emotionally detached from the teams by the constant revolving door that I don't care if I miss a game. It doesn't bother me when we lose and an early exit to an inferior team in the tournament has become expected.

I can't say that it will never be the same but it will have to be when we are finished with the one and done philosophy so you can have some sort of emotional attachment to the players.
I agree, it was bad back then, but I still watched and sat on the edge of my seat the entire game. Now, I do not even watch.

It will not be forgotten. You better bet your ass on that.

The difference between the good (and bad) old days is the player revolving door we have now and have had since Cal got here. Yes, when we had the really impactful players early on it was fun. However, even then for many fans it wasn't the same. There's no carry-over, no continuity, and no relationship established with the fans or school to speak of. If these mercenaries aren't really good it just sucks to watch.

Nice post snowflake

That is the scary part. He has turned off a huge element of the fan base and I doubt he can get them back. I didn't think I would reach a point in time where I did not care if they won or lost. But this is where I am now. And I am not alone.
You are the minority.

OP well reasoned post-

He has done something no other coach or person in the history of the University of Kentucky has been able to do. Something I thought would be impossible. He has made a significant portion of the fan base not care about the the program and lose their passion for Kentucky basketball. I am not sure it will ever be the same again.

Maybe if those same fans weren't so scared of equal rights they'd still be interested. People in this state get so upset when people of color voice their concerns or opinions but say nothing when cops cap a law abiding woman sitting in her home.

There just sin't any justification for this season and the way Cal has handled it. The record is awful and completely unacceptable.

I think your post is correct. Lots of things happened this year and none of them have been good. Cal is at the forefront of the program and of the issues this year.

I just do not believe he will change. I do not believe he thinks he needs to. That is why I would rather him leave.

IF, he doesn't change then he will truly lose the fan base, not just ridiculous merch burning fringe.

That's ridiculous. I would never let a coach ruin my passion for UK. That's on those people.

Okay, if you don't like the team then find a new team. You are all so spoiled. Massive injuries this year and a dud PG. Every other PG has been fire. But Cal sucks. This site is laughable.

iu

massive injuries? Who recruited the PG?
Yeah, Brooks was out for the first third of the season and arguably our best player never got to get it going (Clarke).

I know Cal recruited Askew but he obviously took him because Cunningham didn't come.

Like ground hog day, year after year.

Seriously, you gonna go there pinhead? Beyond stupid. Sports is probably your IQ ceiling ... so leave it at that and you can thank me now.

I also miss playing in early season Tournaments like Maui that he will not participate in. Only did so in 2010-11 because UK was committed before he was hired.

Because let's be clear. It's a CAL FIRST Program....Not a "players first" and definitely not a "fans first" program. The "NBA DRAFT NIGHT" is only to stroke his ego. That's why he shows up there. Look at me...look at me

Oh and that yearly paycheck isn't bad either

You and your race mongering is wearing thin around here. Race has zero to do with it. Cal is white and I hold him more responsible than I do the players. I don’t care what color skin you have, when you dis-respect the flag and anthem, I got no use for you. Your total dis-respect for Kentuckians by throwing a blanket, “you are racist” out there constantly shows your lack of character.

I still love the Cats, but I have lost a bit of the fire lately. I don’t get mad when they lose anymore, which kind of scares me.

Nevertheless, I think Cal deserves the benefit of the doubt, but if he refuses to change his philosophy and things don’t improve, he needs to move on.

I am patient. I will give him this year as an aberration, but there needs to be some significant improvement next season or he will lose my support (not that he even cares, but just saying).

We all know Calipari needs to improve and adapt but how much change can one realistically expect in 1 year after the worst year in a century? Of course everyone knows he's back next year and with his contract beyond next season, UK is SOL if things don't change and would be up to him to leave UK early to get out of the deal.

An 8-10 loss season in the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 would be a huge jump but simply does not cut it for UK standards. I feel this is the best we can hope for with Calipari in the future and that worries the hell out of me. I don't think his brand of basketball and coaching philosophy without the very best of 5 star recruits is sustainable enough for many 5 loss or fewer seasons with Final 4 trips.

We'll still have a segment of the fan base who will act like Cal is the Grand Poobah if he merely finishes above .500 so long as they can throw it in our faces there was a slight improvement from the year before. The same ones when the Cats flame out in the Sweet 16 or lose to an inferior opponent in the Elite 8 point back to January saying look how bad we were then and how far they got as if that's supposed to give us solace in losing. Then we'll do it all over again next year with roster turnover and mass exodus. Rinse and repeat.

Watched the 78 game and never turned back, until now. Got a degree from UK, was a walk on in wrestling and football. Loved the Pitino teams, up tempo, fun to watch. Tubby ball, not so much. Enjoyed watching players develop over their careers, looked forward to who was coming back. Knew their names. OAD didn't appeal to me but was happy with the results the first 5 years. Now I just can't watch. Faces/names change so often I don't know them. No rhyme or reason to the offense - seems to be the Harlem Globetrotters weave at best, playground isolation the rest of the time. It's all just passed me by and I don't enjoy watching any more. Ran around the yard like a crazy man when we won in 2012, tore my UK shirt off when we lost in 2015. Now, meh... Don't like the political posturing and certainly not happy with the results. Not even frustrated any more, just numb from what it's become.

Law abiding woman? Heh, hardly. She was completely involved. Don't believe me, read the police transcripts. Not saying she deserved to die but she was not innocent.

True Story of BT

It's not some fringe....it's lifelong fans he's already lost. Believe it or not, sports is not above everything else for people.

He's undoing his whole time here in one year, and I'm not just talking about wins and losses.

I'm talking about folks who save their vacation days and money to travel all over the country to support UK. They do it because of the passion and love they have for Kentucky basketball. Cal has killed that.

He slowly deconstructed UK to fit his mold and his preferences, all the while talking of the lore and tradition of UK while he did it. The people kind of raised their eyebrow but not much else because the 1st 6 years were magical.

However, the last 5 years have been lacking. His words began to ring hollow. Early tourney exits and losing as much as he won against top teams. Players leaving. Players not playing. Turmoil in the sidelines.

The little things that were overlooked begin to get bigger and the swaggy comments become snide remarks toward fans.

Undoing of Senior Day. Refusal to play home and homes instead opting for neutral site games. Putting players NBA dreams ahead of overrall team success.

This is my longest post in a long while on here, but Cal decided somewhere along the way to make UK his personal NBA tryout team and took the tradition of UK from Top in the country to just about getting to the NBA.

Fans that are not happy and feel their UK of yesterday is gone and that do not like the UK of today, are now labeled as fringe.

Cal's transforming UK and dividing the fanbase has broken something that the point shaving scandal and the probation couldn't do, it's taken the passion away. If that keeps happening, UK is no longer the top of the heap, but just another log in the pile, because this fanbase has no peer.
