Tennessee Moves On From QB Nico Iamaleava

UT did all of us a big favor by not allowing a player to run the program.
I’ve never given props to UT football for anything. But, they just moved up in my eyes for this very decision. Players and agents have been holding schools hostage for the last couple of years. I don’t know how it all went down, but they deserve props for not caving to ridiculous demands.

I’m guessing the young man is not happy with his camp now that he’s barred from playing in SEC this year.

Players deserve to get paid, but there’s another price to pay for holding teams hostage.

Where the $4 Million number came from. This stuff is crazy!!

"Iamaleava has not commented about the situation, but his absence at least gave the optics of a holdout. ESPN's Chris Low, citing sources, reported that Iamaleava's representatives wanted his NIL pay increased to $4 million.

That would align with blockbuster NIL contracts involving college quarterbacks this offseason. Miami's Carson Beck and Duke's Darian Mensah got close to $4 million, CBS Sports reported, but they had to go into the portal to get those deals.

Spyre Sports Group, the NIL collective that pays Iamaleava, has not responded to multiple requests for comment from Knox News.

I see you’ve never read an NIL contract before. They’ll have no grounds to sue.

Lol. I can tell you want me to think you are an expert. So tell us all what's in every "NIL" contract.

No, I've not read an entire "NIL" contract. I've not seen more than bits and pieces. What I have seen has been a 3 yr contract.

I don't know the particulars of his deal, but if it was just a 1yr contract, and there's nothing in it about non-performance, of course they wouldn't. If they are that stupid, it's on them.

If there is anything in there about it being a multi-year deal, they should just sell the contract to someone else and move on. Let the next school deal with him. Again, if they can't, then they screwed themselves.

Do you think he got all $8 million and is taking it with him?
No. I actually think the original deal was he had to stay at least 3 years to get the $2M/ year NIL money.
But, they had to pay him a lot of up front money to get him to UT and out of SCal.

NCAA was greedy, now they are paying the price. How did they think that they could make money while Ed Obannon couldn’t get anything for his image being used on a video game?
NCAA isn’t a company. They didn’t get greedy and don’t make money for themselves other than adminstratiove costs. Once again the NCAA is made up of UK and all the other member schools and with the the exception of Millionaire coaches the money those schools get overwhelmingly goes right back to the players in the form of stadiums, training facilities, layers lounges, travel, gear, nutritionist, medical care, promotion, on and on and on.

Why do you think most schools lose money on athletics?

So the rumor is that Dan Lanning tipped off Huepel that this kid was shopping over the last few days or week for takers if he entered the portal. This was sent to me just a few minutes ago. Not an article that I know of. Just a meme/photo.

That's been out there since this all started leaking a few days ago. But it was out right after the playoffs that dad was shopping him around. OSU was one, looks like Oregon was one.

Lots of smoke he wants to get back home, but with the state tax in Cali not sure how much net gain he gets with Tn be a no state tax state.

UT is going to get Avery Johnson from K state. An upgrade from Nico according to some UT insiders

Could very well be. Honestly nico was the very reason their O struggled often. Hed constantly overthrow wide open guys costing them big gains.
So far this guy wasn't even worth the 2 mil per year, let alone double.

Imo their offense is much better with a distributor.

Transfer will also be hard for his quota bc I don’t think many collectives have his rate laying around this time of year. He’d either take a cut or a booster would have to come in and make an increase

Sources added to ESPN that with Iamaleava's future uncertain, officials from Tennessee's collective began to make calls Friday to see what the potential market could look like for his replacement. One quarterback got more money from his school Friday after Tennessee's collective called third-party officials tied to him, a source told ESPN.

Is there any doubt this system is completely broken.

Well, of course UT fans think the KState kid is better. :) It's the 'backup QB syndrome' on steroids. Nico's a savior and a superstar waiting to explode on the CFB universe. Oh, he's transferring? Well, the guy we get from Podunk Univ. is much better anyway.

I hate this new era. The best players are just whores anymore.

Then if he wins the starting job, is he gonna hold out for more money before the season starts or DURING...? You have to consider that if you're looking at him at all

How was a legal NIL deal Illegal? NIL was allowed when he was being recruited.

It wasn't just the NIL deal, it was all the other perks Nico and his group were getting. He and his family were getting the use of a private jet to visit UT before and after his commitment is a major one. NCAA was considering it costing nico some eligibility and the Vols sued to assure he didn't lose any eligibility. He was the savior of the program then, now he is a useless bum according to the vols who wasn't good enough to play in the SEC.

What an absolute shit show. This is the inevitable outcome of 100% free agency and NIL “deals” that are largely one sided with barely any accountability for one party.

Any chance Nico would be interested in coming to UK? We have the baseline NIL amounts with coal and tobacco so surely we could lure him here...

I hope no one takes him.

This whole NIL is much different than what I thought it was supposed to be.
This would be funny that the dad was shopping him around and that would be great if no other team would want him and he's left out in the cold. Then maybe the next player that tried this stupid crap they would think twice before doing it.

Just saw where Tulane is one of the schools interested. Does Coach Sumrall and Tulane have the money to get him?

UCLA and UNC are the others.

Don't think ICLA has the 4m he is asking for. No idea what Tulane has going on, I suppose they could have some bigtime boosters that could get him but not sure he is going to get what he is asking. USC has said they aren't interested, same with Oregon, ND and OSU. Really looking his people overplayed their hand.

Unrelated to the topic but is Heupel literally turning into Fat Phil before our very eyes?
