Sumrall to Tulane

Awesome, good medium step up instead of taking a P5 job straight from Troy. Now he can work on recruiting a higher caliber, hiring a higher level assistants, going against a tougher schedule. Great job growing himself slow and steady. 2 yrs of winning at Tulane and he can get top job offers

Not the move I would make if I was JS. Neal Brown went from Troy to West Virginia. That's a better job than Houston that Tulane coach got. Louisiana coach got Florida. Not a lot of jobs opened up this year. I'd stay at Troy and wait for something bigger. Feels like there a 50/50; chance Tulane craters and find it's historical level.

He’s going to a very dirty city. Hope he got the ok from the wife. Not that Troy, Alabama is Mayberry but it’s more of a family town than that sewer.

I think it’s a smart move. He’ll get to take over a program that’s in a really good spot already, not in need of a rebuild. If he can have a couple years of success he’ll get a good job offer.

Plus Napier face planting at Florida might make some top schools hesitant to hire a Sun Belt coach.

A better chance they run the American with no Cincinnati, Houston, UCF, or SMU in that league anymore. Js

Willie Fritz built a solid program at Tulane, don't forget they beat USC in last year's Cotton Bowl. They have a relatively new on-campus stadium and are in a manageable G5 conference. Sumrall has past experience as an asst at Tulane so he knows the area and potential pitfalls and undoubtedly has contacts. No reason to think he can't continue to grow the program.

Looks a bit more like the Urban Myer path to me. UM went from Bowling Green (MAC being roughly equivalent to the Sun Belt) To Utah, a G5 school, have to think the Mountain West is roughly Equivalent to the AAC, before moving on to Florida and OSU. If he makes UK stop 3 and has UM level success here then I can handle that.

Seems like a lateral move for him. Some of the SEC schools should have given him a look. I never liked Tulane since that game we played against them where the refs stole the game from us. 1979 maybe? Anybody? Yes I hold a grudge a long time. I remember Cawood wanting to go down to the field wanting to whip their asses.

Also good for us to see him how he’ll do here and if we continue to think he’ll be a good candidate when the day comes.

It was reported that he told MSST no. So other SEC schools did give him a look.

I’m thinking him and UK/Stoops stay in touch and have a timeline with each other. I’m saying Stoops is here maybe two more years and Jon knows. He is just piling up the experience until it’s time to come back to Kentucky.

Tulane is a good job especially for the last big opening this cycle (as of now). Fritz did great there winning some big bowls. The last bad year was when the team had to leave town because of a hurricane and they all spent the season living in Birmingham, right?

He’ll have a ton of local talent. If he can build there then he’ll add to his resume.
It’s not P5 but there are few better G5 jobs and I’m sure he got a nice pay bump.

Non-conf games vs Kansas St and Oklahoma next year. He has a big year he’ll be one of the hottest names in the sport.

I remember that Tulane officiating job also!

But, I think a good move for Jon. Why? First $2 million a year. Second, we now know that it is probably not Mark Stoops intention to be at UK forever. I think Jon is 41 - 15 years younger than Mark Stoops. When Jon succeeds at Tulane for 2 or 3 years - he will be able to go anywhere - and hopefully to UK. UK job is now one of the top 10 jobs in America - basically evenone knows that! I am not saying it is one of the top 10 programs - I am saying it is one of the top 10 jobs!

The Iowa job may be coming up - the Texas A & M job opened my mind more about Mark going home or to a bigger opportunity. However, after saying that - next year is a big year for Mark Stoops in my opinion. 12 years is a long time at a school. How many coaches coaching today can say they have been at same school for 12 years? New SEC will have 16 coaches - only two of those have 12 years at same school. Saban and Stoops. Saban would never leave Alabama for another school - he is already at number 1. I still believe Mark retires here - but I think he doesn;t coach past 60. Kids will all be in or near college age and he will have over $100 million in bank - so family taken care of forever!

Go Big Blue!

I still believe Stoops will go to Iowa when that job opens and it will be his last position one way or another.

Why? I don't get the Iowa thing and yes I know he attended school there but he probably hasn't been back to the state in 30 years. He may leave, nothing is forever, but I just don't see that move.

It will be a place that I think he’d be accepted. His style of play fits with what that fan base is accustomed to, and the expectation level is not thru the roof.

And if he wears out his welcome in 6-8 years, he’d probably be done coaching anyways. If he succeeds, he has a legacy in Iowa lore.

Think they'd be willing to pay him 9 million?
