Stoops Signed New Contract - Bigger Buyout and Extension

Wow!! Ouch!! Now at 2-5 last 7 games. Most points scored in SEC play 27 points, in a 3-5 finish in SEC Play. Not sure of the details, but if it is a Big extension, you gotta wonder about that?? I certainly can see keeping him at least 4 years, need that for recruiting. It will be interesting to see what the details are. Good luck next Saturday, should be a very competitive game. Always tough to win on the road at any level. Looking forward to visiting Commonwealth again. Should be a great environment.

Wtf is Mitch doing…..how does Stoops get an extension in the mist of one of the most disappointing seasons ever?
Because other schools were making inquiries and he's getting above market rate pay for above market rate returns. It's a coach's market NOT a university's market that's for sure.

Besides, people often think contracts are about the current year but they are mostly about future projections. And given Stoops track record in nine seasons his future bodes well.

Stoops was already a top 15 paid coach, and the number 4 paid coach in the SEC. I wouldn’t call what we’re seeing above market returns.

I find it hard to believe another school is going to give Stoops more than $7million a year for this product. If they are then they can have him.

Jimmy Sexton strikes again!

I tried to tell you guys all these “rumors” were bullshit to get his boy more money.
Exactly. In Hacks crazy thread about Auburn coming after Pucker Butt - one of my comments was, "Stoops agent doing work."

Once again Stoops and Sexton float a rumor and proceed to run a train on Barney.

We are getting historical above market returns for the University of Kentucky. Stoops has most all-time wins. He's signed record high recruiting classes. He was winning 8-10 games with barely Top 30 signing classes. If UK is going to penny pinch on Stoops then we are like Boston trading Babe Ruth to the Yankees for peanuts and will be cursed for 100 years ha.

I guess we are on opposite ends. I can't believe schools with better in-state recruiting than UK, more football money than UK, more NIL money than UK, and better infrastructure than UK wouldn't think..."damn. we got all of this why don't we hire Mark Stoops who has overachieved at a place with less resources than us."

Think what Texas A&M, Iowa, Penn State, or Oregon could do with Stoops and other schools like that.

(Iowa doesn't have some of those other advantages but BIG10 TV $ will play more than SECN over this current contract).

If those schools think stoops is so great, then they should hire him. There has not been any actual interest in Stoops nor do I think their fanbases would be excited with that hire.

One reason they don't is because UK preempts them by giving Stoops better and better contracts. You can't steal if UK makes it financially painful relative to other promising coaching hires, not to mention you continue to buy Stoops loyalty since UK has treated him well since 2014 and before actual results.

You don't know if there's been any or a bunch of actual interest in Stoops. You say that like it's fact but you don't know you are speculating.

The reason 7-5 is a disappointment is our schedule has gotten really easy!
I'd argue the opposite. There's a solid case our schedule is tougher than ever. Just look how the SEC East has changed since 2014.

This year: Tennessee is a Top 10 team, South Carolina is going to win at least 7 games, Vandy will win at least five, and UGA is a playoff team. Mizzou will bowl and Florida will too. Didn't the SECE have a winning record vs the SECW two years in a row?

Our other two annual opponents...Miss State stays a 6-8 win team, and UofL is better this year than the last several. Neither one of those two a big step back.

Yes, the East is getting better! That’s why we’re sitting at 6-5 with only 3 SEC wins.

This is why I’m so against this extension, Stoops took advantage of a down SEC (except UGA) and that’s when we had our “historic” seasons.

Those programs are finally on the rise and we are back to 6 maybe 7 wins again! Not worth $8.6 million/year to me. I appreciate what he’s done, but I’m convinced he’s reached his ceiling. You’re either getting better or getting worse in this league, we’re getting worse!

He's the best for a reason. Even so I can't believe even Mitch fell for this nonsense. Auburn surely had very little interest and stoops had probably less interest in them.

Have to wonder how distracted stoops was that vandy week. We knew he was tied up in the nil stuff but now we find out he was working a new deal too.

We disagree on the rest, but I agree this point of yours may have some legs. I'm skeptical because Stoops also has some big wins on his resume while usually taking care of business against teams equal to or lesser than his the last few years, but you may be right.

Time will tell!

This is the price of continuity in the program. Until there is a way to monetize some of Stoops’ salary towards the players, it might as well go to him as the rifle team or a suck-ass baseball or WBB. We should be happy that we can get “The sky is falling“ mad when we have a .500 season as opposed to years past when it would be seen as a pinnacle.

Mitch really is something. While I’m not saying fire Stoops, you’d have to say that his former contract was plenty fair considering everything. The agents can posture all they want, he’s clearly out of the running for larger jobs at this time. Iowa may still have him if Ferentz suddenly quits. Just was not necessary.

We would be worse off if Stoops left.
But after Jimbo, Cal and other buyout news this year, I thought we would be a little more responsible.
Putting us on the hook for a lot of money if things go south, which they can.

Lot of money to stay pat. I think this signals he will make many changes this year.

Based on the reporting it looks like Stoops is getting paid more for better results. He's making $2 million more a year with a higher buyout and also getting bonuses for making the playoffs or winning 8+ games.

At the same time, I don't see any language that he still gets an auto-extension or bonuses for winning 7 or more games. The assistant coaching salary pool went up to $6.5 million in the last contract and I wonder if that changed with this new one.

If Stoops leaves then UK is demonstrating they'll pay top dollar for his replacement. A far cry from the Rich Brooks era.

Bingo. They wouldn't have signed him if he didn't agree to a list of things they wanted. A new OC is probably the first. For the first time in my life. I look forward to UK football game under the talent stoops is sustaining. Some of our fans are complete idiots to think we can just toss him out and find a coach that wins 10 games annually. Just laughable.

I hear some of you, and frankly don't care. He isn't perfect, but I still see him and his program as "processes". He's done much for the program. I think there's more to come, and some of it will come through him reinventing himself and the program. I will be surprised if he fails to manage the transition from '22 to '23 with some success. I expect him to pull rabbits out of his hat, or have others on staff do so... even if a new face or two on staff proves necessary.

Our identity right now is that "we have a head coach" and are a pretty solid football team trying to step up to elite. I'm still good with that for now, even if we took a step back this year. The essence of mutual commitment is to not abandon the relationship at the first crisis.

For hell's sake... some of you would can the winningest coach in program history in the same winning (yes) season in which he assumed the mantle?

Sorry... I don't see UK football modeling itself on Auburn.
