Still Think Cal Is A Great Coach?

Because he's not! He's an excellent recruiter who is a "C" bench coach at best. He's stubborn, won't make obvious moves that need to be made and the moves he does make a lot of times hurt more than help.

We will have to have a totally stacked roster to get 9 and even that doesn't give us an overwhelming chance at it.

And to the smartasses, no I don't want him gone because there's nobody else available that's a better option. But he could be so much better than he is but refuses to be out of pride/stubbornness.

Montana brought up 3 big ref hose jobs , all in the 2nd half. IB 4th foul ( should be sent to the SEC for review ) , Willis plays perfect D with hands straight up , and TU's D in the post ... all 3 terrible calls with no basis .

Willis passed on a half dozen open 3's at least. It wouldn't hurt if he could create his own shoot too but I realize that's asking too much from him.
I don't blame him, he takes a contested 3 and missed he gets splinters in his rear. No our offense is nice to see Murray dribble no where and throw up a prayer. Nice way to deflect his horrible coaching by trying to hate on Willis. Once again Johnblue you show your lack of basketball knowledge. Bless your heart.

Absolutely he's a great coach. His win/loss record and tournament runs say he is. This roster is not stacked, are you kidding me? Our front court is horrible.

Our front court might be horrible, but it isn't because of a lack of stars placed beside their names There are a number of coaches that would love to have these horrible front court players and they would win with them. If the two coaches switched players, UT would still win.

Cal started messing around mid first half and totally messed this team up. He's trying to rest players. Maybe he should settle with 7 players and run half speed practice drills.

Should have a zone in our Arsenal. Their 5 out drive and we foul killed us. Make them pass and try to shoot over us. Out coached tonight because we didn't zone them. We couldn't handle them in man. Try something else even if the NBA doesn't want them to play zone. Not a good night for CC. Develop the whole team

Don't like smartasses. OP? Don't post stupid things that attract them.

Cal has weaknesses (like refusing to play zone) that are usually not an issue because he regularly has superior talent. But, I've come to the conclusion that this team is basically a bunch of role players (aside from Ulis and Murray) who are now being asked to be spotlight performers. They aren't up to it and Cal refuses to change his style to fit his personnel.

I forgot you're only about one player. Since you missed it obviously Willis is a starter now, your excuse of blaming the coach for not playing are no longer valid. He's playing good but that doesn't explain that you still think he is getting the shaft when he is a good as he wants to be right now.

If you pull your head out of the sand or out of your butt, you would realize that the OP is correct. There is no way that anyone that understands the game of basketball would attempt to give Cal a pass on this debacle.

He is a great coach who lost a shizzload of talent to the NBA last year. The bench warmers left behind on the interior will not be heading to the NBA in this lifetime. Skal is fools gold.

Recruiting is part of coaching. Cal is a great coach. He has a very young team (again) this year. Most young teams go through growing pains. We've been spoiled by several young teams that were talented enough to avoid the typical losses suffered as a result of inexperience.

Still waiting on OP to be specific on "obvious" moves Cal should make. I guess that boy is all talk.

People post dumb things when they're upset, I'm thinking this is one of them. He's a HOF coach, you don't get in there without being a "great" coach. You might as well be arguing that a basketball isn't round.
Very true, thanks for the reminder for some people.

Here is two

Play zone defense just a little.

Get you best 3 point shooter open for a 3 /Willis

Did neither.

1. Learn how to call a timeout when you are losing huge leads. Stop giving young players so much rope.

2. Unless you are going to have all defensive teams every year, which he doesn't, then learn to mix in some different defensive looks to help keep opponents changing and guessing.

3. Start recruiting a college oriented player to every 2 OAD's. specifically the guard position. This could help aid this problem we have every other year.

The man cannot coach a lick! Who couldn't go to 4 FF in 6 years. Ask Tubby, wait no, Billy G, um no, Bill Self, hell no! Who can we ask that?

These players are suffering from a phenomenon called relative deprivation.

Two of the worst coached in the country.... Says UK fans ( Jones at LSU and Barnest at UT) and the great Cal gets his butt handed to him. But can not be negative about Cal!!!! He has 8 Final fours in 8 months!!!

Did anyone calling for a zone notice that late in the first half we went 2-3 for exactly one possession? We gave up a layup and immediately switched back out of it.

It isn't BS. Coaches that aren't use to having a smorgasbord of 4 and 5 star players have to depend more on coaching than overwhelming their opponents with superior talent.

The other side of that coin is they have those kids for 3 or 4 years and are able to build a cohesive nucleus
with a lot of familiarity and chemistry.

Starting over every year is not as easy as it seems, particularly when all the pieces aren't really what they seem.

And? That happens every other possession in man. I personally love the other team scores on us every single game taking the ball out of bounds because our coach refused to play zone on out of bounds plays.

This game came down to interior players that are unable to provide consistent results. Poy, Lee, Skal. If even one of these players was on the level of the big men we've had as of late we win this game and at KU in spite of the horrible officiating. Cal can't prevent Poy from doing stupid things and fouling out. Cal can't turn lee into a basketball player. And no matter how hard he tries, Cal can't turn Skal into a 24 year old version of himself.

Starting over every year is a personal choice. Cal takes great pride in the number of players that he sends to the NBA even if some are not ready and end up in the D league. If he took the time to develop some of his "regular" players, maybe he would have players on his teams that could act as the glue to keep his teams together while his young 5 stars learning how to play the game.

Dear god... Yes. He's one of the 2 or 3 best in college basketball.

No other team in college deals with the type of road atmospheres we do though. 81 free throws in the last 2 games for our opponents. I doubt that has happened for any other team in college this season.

And it's not because our guys foul that much. Look at some of the stuff that was called a foul on our guys tonight. Briscoe's 4th, Ulis guarding the post, Willis arms straight up. It's every road game because college officials are old and can't check their emotions in that those of atmosphere.

That stuff isn't Cal's fault unless you fault him for making us THE SHOW in college basketball even when we're not that good.

the road atmosphere isnt to blame for this. we should have owned ucla, tennessee, and auburn. those teams suck.
