I have not been able to post lately. No one here except my doctor cousin is interested in my medical issues, but it hasn't been a good year. Nothing is more important than health. Anyway, we are getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving week and I wish all of you and your families excellent holidays. Normally at this time of year, I am making bowl travel plans. This year I am focused on my family and my recovery, which is a good thing.

Today I can comment on the state of our football program. Things are never quite as good as they seem when everything looks great, but also never quite as bad as everything seems when it looks awful. The reason for this is that there is near-parity in the SEC due to all the TV and bowl revenue, and the difference between winning and losing boils down to relatively fleeting factors and morale issues that can completely change in as little as a season or two.

NIL has changed everything. When Mark Stoops says NIL has burned him out, I take him at his word and so should you. I can tell you this much. The hire of Danielle Braswell has been a failure. Management of the college game is changing faster than most institutional bureaucracies can manage and, to put it kindly, Ms. Braswell has not bought the juice, so to speak. Eddie Gran has assumed most of those responsibilities although he is supposed to be a senior advisor for our offense. Stoops, Gran, and Barnhart met earlier this month to discuss sweeping staff changes needed to bring staffing up to the level of dealing seriously with SEC NIL management. We need about 3-4 X the staff that we currently have working this objective and raising money because the original ruling privatizing NIL and separating it from the schools has already devolved under the weight of judiciary and legislative interference. Now it's a jungle out there. Given the circumstances, institutional adaptation is the only course out of this. Stoops understands this and has been trying to adapt. Barnhart also understands it but try managing a $200 million budget with 23 different sports, each with its own teaching, training, nutrition, and marketing staffs. Just for football alone, UK employs more than 60 coaches and staff. Marc Hill has been the Deputy Athletics Director for football. Thus, this is really Hill's problem to solve. But read this link and you can see that Hill, too, has been stretched too thin-

ukathletics com/staff/marc-hill/

Our current football team has as much or more talent than any other team Stoops has had. But there is a deficit of performance by the OTs, and the QB isn't experienced enough to compensate for that. We are fine for now at WR and RB. Jamarion Wilcox is a future star if he stays. But the lack of QB play combined with the adaptation process of our new OC and OL coach have hamstrung our offense. As the season rolled along, injuries brought the coup de grace. Most of the injured players are back now although we don't know how rust and lingering effects of injuries are affecting their play. Absences of D'Eryk Jackson, DJ Waller, and Terhyon Nichols continue to hurt, but that's football. It is a problem everywhere.

I won't be surprised if UK puts up a good fight today in Austin because our defense shouldn't match up badly with the Longhorn offense if Walker and Hairston are near 100%. UK has actually performed well ATS as an underdog. But I don't see how our OTs can block the Longhorns' DL so I don't expect UK to score many points. The over/under on this game is 47 so Vegas is not expecting an offensive explosion. If I was a betting man, which I am not, I would bet the under.

I still believe UK can beat UL in Lexington, so maybe this is a 5-7 team. Stoops has had UL's number, and our schedule has been a lot better than UL's. But, either way, this season has hurt our program. One can now connect the dots and see our football program has been in gradual decline since 2020. This has become particularly apparent since we had to forfeit our entire 2021 season, although other signs have also been apparent. Yet, there has not yet been a recruiting dropoff. During this season, Stoops confessed to being worn down by fundraising and short on time to teach football (which is what he enjoys). We should take him at his word. NIL had something to do with why Coach Saban retired even though his age is a more obvious reason. NIL is a problem for all coaches and programs because the transfer portal gives players a route to leave on impulse. In other words, players hold all the cards and there is always a danger that a program's investment in a player can go up in smoke. So far, this has actually worked in Stoops' favor since inbound talent into our program has been >> than outbound talent with only a few exceptions.

But that may change. If reports can be believed, Deone Walker, Max Hairston, and Dane Key may be NFL bound. If that is true, then Stoops can expect no more than 5 offensive and 4 defensive starters back in 2025. Because of strong recruiting, there is still a lot of young talent on UK's roster. But herein lies a big problem. If some reports are accurate, Stoops is in danger of losing some key pieces through the portal this coming offseason.

So Stoops and Marrow must hold onto our recruiting class. JaKayden Ferguson has already decommitted. So far, there are no specific rumors about other decommits, and Stoops can't afford any. We especially have to hang onto our linemen recruits. Losing any of those guys would just add to the most important elements of overall decline. Plus, Stoops and Marrow still need to add more quality depth to the class. Some of the recruiting conditions are not quite as attractive as they have been in recent years, so our coaches have their work cut out.

The portal is a huge worry. There could be some potentially important portal losses this time. Stoops just can't afford to lose his future foundation. Here are some younger players who must be kept at all costs-

Khamari Anderson
Cutter Boley
Cam Dooley
Tavion Gadson
Hardley Gilmore
Grant Godfrey
Jacob Kauwe
Koby Keenum
Tovani Mizell
Terhyon Nichols
Jason Patterson
Quaysheed Scott
Aba Selm
Steven Soles
Brian Robinson
Smith twins
David Washington
Jamarion Wilcox
Malachi Wood

I'm not saying those are the only important ones. Just the most obvious.

I have been almost an eternal optimist. But our football program is at a tipping point now. Competition in the SEC is more intense than ever, as we will see this afternoon. Our predictable talent losses this offseason are more serious than usual. Although this is a reactionary indicator that can turn on a dime, our fan base is losing confidence. Our head coach has acknowledged burn out.

But Coach Stoops has now made it clear that he is staying, so talk of his departure or firing can and should stop unless something fundamentally changes. Notwithstanding some recent click bait reporting, I believe the coordinators are settled in Lexington for another year or two. Fundamentally, this coaching staff is at least as good (and more experienced) than in recent times when our record was better.

If our team gives a good effort today in Austin, then shows an appropriate amount of pride and effort at home against UL, and then our coaches keep the critical nucleus of our recruiting class together, our program will get into the offseason on a more upbeat note and the opportunity to prevent devastating outbound transfers will be there for our coaches. But if the team lays down and the recruiting class experiences more key decommits, then look out below.

Within the last 24 months, some were beginning to believe we are a football school. Cal's departure and Pope's hiring, so far, have been a big breath of fresh air here to say the least, although it's still a small sample. I haven't given up on Stoops' staff, but the athletics department must devise new ways to cope with the rapidly changing NIL era. This means, among other things, a larger senior staff to deal with fundraising and free up Mark Stoops' time for teaching and coaching. It means the BBN really has to step up now, and I am not talking about attendance or buying t-shirts. Every SEC school has strong attendance. I am talking about participation in 15, and particularly in the most fortunate members of BBN stepping up even more than they already are. The BBN is huge and, contrary to what some may believe, we are not at a numerical or demographic disadvantage. But we have to think like the fan base of an SEC football school thinks. That means we can't throw out the baby with the bathwater every time something doesn't go like we want. All the players and coaches are human, so this is ultimately about perseverance, coping, and getting better. It's a process that never ends, and it can be done here as long as it is a priority. I still believe it is.

I’m glad you’re feeling better and good enough to post here buddy. I’ve had a lot of heart problems lately and recently had a second heart attack so im just trying to roll with the punches myself. As for the Football Program, yeah I’m still all in and I do understand where Kentucky is and can be. As I get older and keep putting my heart into every snap of the ball I just want us to compete as hard as we can and get the best results possible. I always thought and even said I want to at least win the SEC one time before I leave this world. lol. I don’t see that happening but who knows. It just doesn’t seem as important as it used to but I still want it. Haha. Anyway I’ve said enough. Again, glad to hear from you again and hope you’re feeling well. Thanks

Good article Rembrandt. I believe what you say. So the bottomline is the next two weeks. If it falls apart - then time to reboot and clean house. Indiana has shown everyone that road map! If we we win two - hail to the chief and let’s get this train rolling! If we look good today and beat Louisville- momentum could build on off we go! Whatever happens the rest of the year- we need to do what the results show - not look at dollar cost to make changes!

Go Big Blue!
Another very good post by Rembrandt! I am happy you are doing better. You were missed by a lot of us. Interested to see how the season plays out. Hopefully a good performance today and a victory over the Dirty birds.

Thank you for your gracious comment. That isn't the bottom line. Stoops will be here next year regardless unless he himself decides otherwise. But the next two weeks will tell us what kind of an offseason it will be and how strong of a case Stoops can make in the transfer portal. Beating UL again is important now for the program ever though it is only for pride and a little bit of recruiting leverage. To put it another way, beating UL is about treading water versus sinking further. It isn't rosey, I know, but this is the way it's going to be for now.

Indiana plays in a wussy conference. Only played 1 top 40 team. And is currently getting azz kicked by Ohio St. To quote you "Indiana showing the road map".

I'm with you. This was my second heart attack. This one happened as a complication of surgery, and my kidneys failed. It was like getting run over by a Mack truck. For months I felt like a crash dummy, and am still learning to get back on track. Heart attack and kidney failure are known complications associated with the big surgery I needed, but you never think it's going to happen to you. Right?

I believe we can win again in football. I still believe Stoops can win. So does Marrow. So do our recruits. But we have to get the entire program working right. These days, what happens off the field is almost more important than what happens on game day. Back when Danielle Braswell was hired away from TX A&M, Stoops and Barnhart had the right idea. But for whatever reasons, Braswell has not worked out and Stoops has gotten stretched way too thin, just as Barnhart and Marc Hill are stretched way too thin. This is an organizational matter.

I know most posters here couldn't care less about soccer, volleyball, or women's basketball. Some don't even care about baseball. But Barnhart's job description is to get every sport right. He is doing a remarkable job. But football has roughly 85 players, 60 staff, and hundreds of $millions worth of facilities and property. The football program doesn't turn on a dime. The football enterprise operates 365 days a year whether it is games, recruiting, or developmental activities. To win in the SEC, the program must hit on all cylinders all the time because other SEC programs have as much resources as we have.

By 2018, we were just about hitting on all cylinders and Stoops was recognized in the business as a miracle worker. But Cal was always pushing for superiority, brand new basketball facilities, and a much bigger budget. Although the public at large wasn't generally aware, Cal was the driving force behind the push for a new digital on-campus arena before Barnhart cut the deal with the city of Lexington to renovate RA. That was done to save customer businesses in downtown Lexington. It saved the careers and businesses of untold numbers of Lexingtonians. What finally convinced Cal to move to Little Rock? Tyson and Walton money.

A delicate balance developed inside our athletics department but it was almost impossible to sustain. Then along came COVID and next it was NIL, at first functionally separated from the schools, but then progressively more exploited by some schools even when it meant technically skirting the new rule. Some schools actually got into trouble. But, for the most part, the NCAA has been overwhelmed by litigation and legislative actions and literally ran out of enforcement resources for some time. As the maelstrom churned, COVID hurt the economy, and fundraising at UK took a temporary hit. At the same time, Cal was driving Barnhart nuts. At the end of the day, and for a variety of reasons, focus and resources available for the football program followed the same path that many other businesses followed during COVID and its aftermath. Hindsight is always 20-20 and it's always easy to second guess others in hindsight when the source of the criticism doesn't hold any responsibility for the result. But that is a fool's errand. Smart executives fix the problem, not the blame. The problems inside the football program can be fixed over time. The caveats are that Stoops and his staff must remain energetic, morale inside our athletics department must remain high, and resources must flow to our football program at accelerating speed. Success sustains morale. Over the years, the school has shown real initiative in building facilities and growing football's payroll and recruiting budgets. That process must accelerate now, and Stoops' NIL staff must be grown in both quantity and quality. He needs senior people who are exceptional. If he gets that, he can win again and all the reactive criticisms will dry up again, like they did during the program's "Snell-yeah" chapter in 2016-18 when Stoops showed that he could produce double digit wins. This can happen, but the other SEC schools will not be standing still in the meantime.

So UK's fan base must think and act like an SEC football fan base instead of talking and working in public against our athletics director and our coaches. Some cannot and will not change, but the mainstream of our fan base must step up with public support and more 15 support. It can be done. At one time or another, every SEC football program has been tested this way. Most recovered. This is our test.

Window for beating Florida just slammed shut.

State of our program is Stoops better find some points, some "ball movement" to steal a cliche basketball phrase...otherwise this type of season is going to become the norm.
That's one possibility. It isn't inevitable and I know you aren't saying it is.

Focus now should be on the future, not what's happened the last several games. That time's gone. Look at the talent Boley, Wilcox, Gilmore, Rodriquez brings. Build on that. Find better OL, more playmakers. UK may be about to sign it's best DL class in years, if not ever. That's where the discussions should be, not the sophomoric, childish idiocy of "the coach is stoopid."

Indiana has shown nothing. They still can’t beat Ohio State. Their record is like stoops all smoke and mirrors. NIL will make this year even worse when every bright spot on UKs team ends up at another school with big Buck.

Unless the UK pays players from their bank and unless a limit is placed on this money the haves will have more and the have nots will look like UKs team. You must take the fans out of the equation.

The issue is the SEC is brutal. It is almost impossible to manage the schedule without taking losses. Look at Ole Miss spent big money on the right players. They have lost 3 games to 3 teams inside the conference but outside the Top 25.

It is the AFC South and North all in the same conference. You can spend right and still loose 3 games in conference. That isn’t changing. Every single program is significantly investing in its programs. UK
will never outspend these crazy football schools. The rosters in the league are going to be similar. Which means unexpected losses and wins are going to occur. It is scheduling roulette. Texas caught a break and even Ole Miss had an easier path they just blew it. When a team catches a good schedule they can’t screw it up. This was a brutal schedule and UK didn’t play well.

Look at your schedule that tells you how high the ceiling of the team even if they get the NIL right.

I believe Stoops has had enough chances trying to get a offensive coordinator.
Fire stoops and the entire coaching staff.
He can't get the job done.
He has let other SEC teams pass us up.

Find the best damn recruiter you can get and fire Stoops

Great points about some of Stoops comments toward fund raising and Nil etc

But simply put Stops has shown without Liam Coen snd John Schlarman….he’s going to put somewhat bad to brutally bad offensive performances on the field. Bush showed less then scangerallo to be honest

Bringing back Stoops in 2025….the offense is likely to improve some but then the defense has to get worse doesn’t it?

We should not be in a spot to have to continue with Stoops and that it on Mitch.

So I would call the state of the program isn’t as bad as joker…we have young and old talent…. Brad white is a solid defensive coordinator. But our offense staff stinks all around. But even with a all…not a rosy picture

R90, it is wonderful to see you posting. I hope your health is improved & will stay that way for a good long time. Secondarily, thanks for the great insight.

Glad you are feeling better. I feel your assessment of where we are as a program is a tad optimistic. I think your assessment of NIL and the obstacles it has created is pretty accurate. I cannot agree with your optimistic take on our staff however. Stoops is the head guy , we are paying him 9 million a year to solve problems not whine about them, which he has been doing for the last couple of years. As for his claim of being " burned out" that is totally unacceptable for any leader of a group of men to say. If true he needs to step down and make room for a LEADER with the drive and motivation to face these new challenges head on. I also can no longer give him a pass for not developing a Quarterback in 12 years. Nor can I continue to overlook the ongoing saga of his OCs and often ineffective offensive performance. IMO the state of our program is grim. Without a change in leadership and philosophy I fear we are headed for an abyss we will not extract ourselves from in my life time
