The NCAA is NOT really viable anymore. The schools who were going to be on probation have nothing to concern themselves about as the NCAA is now powerless to penalize them? Colleges can pay players anything they want without ramifications? Tennessee was in limbo and their fans were really distressed - now they are spending money and buying players left and right - and don't think anything about it - consequences? What consequences?
The conferences are becoming very large and the Big 10 and SEC are going to decide the National Championship with the four division winners (or 4 best teams?) from each conference conducting a playoff. The first 4 games and semi finals being the current playoff bowls as we know it? Then a championship game from the semi final games will be played just like now? Semi Finalist and finalist COULD possibly all be from the same league. Everyone else can play intramural football from now on..........as they are no longer relevant.
That seems to be jest of everything to me. Greed and envy has come home to roost. The players will benefit initially, but after this is in affect the old question which is hardly ever asked - and answered is this , "And Then What?" Will the $10 million quarterback be liked by his $100,000 team mates? Will the left guard demand more money than the right guard? Is the wide receiver more valuable than the tight end? How about the safeties and corners? How much is a great kicker worth? I understand the arguments - after all we pay Coaches $10 million a year to do what? Does a football coach really do that much to the benefit of society as a whole? Do you think a teacher does as much as more?
The $100 million dollar tv contracts will NOT support the football programs - much less provide income for the minor sports as in the past. The greed of the colleges will actually bankrupt most of them - unless they have deep pocketed alumni willing to sponsor the teams? Which means we will probably soon have the "Kentucky Fried Chicken Kentucky Wildcats"? Don't laugh - why not? Isn't it now actually the "Adidas Louisville Cardinals"? Remember Adidas was heavily involved in the Louisville basketball bribery scandal - doesn't anyone find it ironic that they are giving a UL of football prospect $3million to sign with Louisville. So how much do they really care what the NCAA thinks? Am I the only way that sees that Adidas is trying to buy Louisville and basically tell the NCAA to pound dirt??? Colleges have been selling the naming rights to stadiums, etc. for years. Bottomline college sports as we have known them for 100 plus years is over.
These are just thoughts and "then what" thoughts after reading and watching what has been going on the last few months in particular and the last years in general. Just one old alumnus feelings about what is going on - I realize that I am truly a dinosaur now!
