Sinfield RIP

No disrespect to this guy (and RIP), but up until this very moment I've never heard of King Crimson. So then I played a few of their songs: they completely suck.
Critics consistently cite them as a hugely influential band. WD, I'm with you on this one - they're awful. Just discordant, weird-ass 'music' that I could only listen to if I was tripping on LSD.

I'm not a fan either but they were one of the fore fathers of prog rock/metal. A LOT of musicians across all genres cite KC as major influences.

Not my thing but not going to say they sucked just because they were not my style.

No, it's because their biggest US "hit" charted at 54. And that was 40 years ago. These dudes were ass and only weirdos like them.
I wouldn't use the charts from the US to determine a band's value.

Lots of bands that were considered great, never had big hits.

I'm not a big King Crimson fan. They have some value.

The New York Dolls, Velvet Underground, UFO....and so on.

To each their own. They're an acquired taste for sure and have influenced a lot of bands today. Took a while for me to warm up to them.

I need to clarify my earlier assessment of KC. I despise it when people say so-and-so sucks even though that particular musician has made more money in the music business than all but the 1% will make in 2 lifetimes. I've listened to KC and I do NOT like their music. It sounds like discordant noise with no rhyme or reason to it. I do not care for it and will not waste 5 seconds of the remainder of my life listening to it. However, I do not think that the musicians suck. I'm positive each of them is >>>> musician than I'll ever be. I just don't like the music they created at all.

I don't want to be lumped into that group of people who think they have the only correct opinion when it comes to art, music, movies, etc.

I listened a little more to these guys to give a few of you the benefit of the doubt. Result: they still suck.

Listen man, if you’re some goth weirdo and you think that the Rocky Horror Picture Show is peak filmmaking and, say, the Shawshank Redemption is cultural trash, that’s your right.

Likewise, to me, King Crimson is unlistenable. I mean it hurt my ears it was so bad. Sure, others may think they are okay, but I don’t care what they think.

Robert Fripp is one of the best guitarists ever. King Crimson is "difficult" music - it's not meant to appeal to fans of basic pop music. Saying they suck is like saying James Joyce sucked as a writer. Or Picasso as an artist. Of course it's your right to say that, but...

BTW, I don't love King Crimson. I think their 80s stuff (with Adrian Belew) is pretty good, but their proggy 70s stuff is a slog.

To be fair, I only listed to their 70's stuff.

They have been around for 50 years and they've sold 1M albums. That tells me that not a lot of people like them. But I'm sure the ones that do love them.

The Adrian Belew/Talking Heads "era" of King Crimson was my favorite. I like a good bit from those three albums, but I get why someone wouldn't dig it.

Elephant Talk is a good example. Wish they'd done a 30 minute version where he went from A to Z
