Shepherd is the best player on the team

Sheppard, who shot 9-10 overall and 7-8 from distance on the night, also added seven assists, three rebounds, three steals, and two blocks to his stat line in just 26 minutes of playing time. A great game for young sharp shooter.

Yes but he also makes so many things happen at both ends he is super valuable. One thing I noticed was how obvious it was when Reed was out top how much more he spread their zone making it much easier for Mitchell to own the middle of the lane. I realize the opponent but when several others were on top the zone definitely sagged more.
Totally agree. I was there tonight and it was obvious he was the best guy on the court. He was indeed forcing that zone to tighten, and his two handed crisp passes were breaking it, specifically the one cross court to Dillingham. As obvious as it must have looked on TV, it was crystal clear in person.

But he did cheat down on defense looking for a steal and left his man haha. But he also had a block and strip or two. You want that energy.

The one guy that needs to be on the floor almost all the time. Even if his shot is off sometimes he will always do a lot more to help us win.

You don’t watch much NBA I guess. I can’t think of one person in the NBA built like REED. He will have to commit to rebuilding his body to have any chance at the NBA.

Steph Curry was SLIMMER than Reed when he entered the NBA. With the NBA being more perimeter oriented, size is not as important as it was even 10 years ago.

Reed is an EXCEPTIONAL player!!!

Not one of Cals draft day favorites but no one else is close to his court savvy and awareness.
Not sure he is the best (may be), but- so impressed by his awareness, passing, and shot selection (except for one shot against Kansas). This team seems to really embrace the success of the team. Lots of quick passes. Might just be me, but last years team didn’t seem to be an “all for one and one for all”. This years team does however.

Cal recognizes his talent and so do his team mates. He played 3rd most minutes on the team. Only 1 minutes less than second most. Only 4 minutes less than Mitchell and we all know why he’s out there the most. I agree he’s our best player overall.

If he does end up being the best player at the end of the year then yeah, he's probably one and done. That also means we probably didn't go very far in March either.. we need DJ and Justin to be those guys. Maybe Bradshaw.

He’s going to be a projected lottery pick I’m afraid. He is just as good as Tyler Herro was. He may stay another year just because he’s a legacy kid. But no way we have him more than 2, IMO.
Nil changes the dynamic. Especially this kid and his parents legacy will get him paid massively. If you’re gonna make nba money in college why rush it? He’s not a generational poverty kid.

Matt Jones who didn’t like Hero (obviously can’t play D he’s white) now won’t give Shep his do - says no way - Wagner or Edwards have to be the best players for this team to be good. Said it today on his show - just like his boy Calapari - who if Edwards scored 25 tonight would have talked 5 minutes about him - barely mentioned Reed with Leach
Team is way better with Shep in game anyone with a brain can see

Calipati has been high on Sheppard since the summer. Do you not realize he was in at crunch time vs Kansas? Cal isn't perfect but he also isn't dumb.

This narrative of Edwards being bad Is dumb tho, he’s played well in 3/4 games. Wagner is definitely behind where I thought he would be but he made some strides tonight. Even if he is the 3/4th best guard that’s a great problem to have.
I said very early that DJ was our 3/4 best guard and some people on here brought I was nuts and laughed that I thought Reed was better. Lulz 🙄 One poster in particular argued with me for days over DJ. Even said he would come back to the thread end of year. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hope you’re right.

I feel like Reed will stay around a while feels like a guy that wants to enjoy his dream of playing for Ky.

1. He played 16 minutes vs. Kansas when Edwards and Wagner played 25 and 29 respectively.
2. Cal is a lot close to dumb than he ever was perfect....look at his coaching philosophy/statements ate Ky over his 14 years.

My brother in law met Jeff last week when Jeff came to his work to talk to them about financial advising/investments. I'd agree that family is doing just fine.

I expected him to be "good." I thought he'd play and contribute as a freshman. I thought he'd play good defense. That doesn't surprise me. I thought he would have great court awareness and be a playmaker with his passing. Doesn't surprise me.

I even thought he'd be a GOOD shooter. But I didn't think he'd be anywhere near this good with it. I realize he isn't going to go 7/8 from 3 every night. But few if any have had his confidence and consistency when shooting the 3. He has fantastic form. He understands when to shoot better than some seniors.

But even on top of the shooting--it's the consistency he's shown through 4 games. He's had a few mistakes here and there. But overall, positive things happen when the kid hits the floor. We've seen so many 5-star freshman with NBA potential show up not knowing the first thing about high level basketball. And here this kid shows up day 1 looking like a 5th year senior.

Someone else pointed it out in one of the other threads

Reed has spent his life as the (by far) best player on every team he's been on--and thus been the focus of every defense.

Now surrounded by several other really talented players, he's probably got more room to work than he had in high school.

Sheppard is on a freakin' roll right now. He won't keep shooting 71% on threes for the year. I hope he doesn't turn out to be as streaky as Herro was at UK. But Sheppard does a lot of other things well that help the team when his shot isn't falling.

However, it is counterproductive for all the fans to get on here and run down DJ because Sheppard is playing well. DJ is still trying to figure it out, and he will find his role. Personally I think DJ should study Jrue Holiday, because he looks like that type of player to me. He is a facilitating PG that isn't really looking to shoot, but can score and distribute without turning the ball over, and plays hard nosed defense.

This is a good ball club with a lot of potential, if envy doesn't start creeping in due to fan (or coaching) favoritism.

On Cal's post game he seemed pleased with the team and mentioned Shep. One thing he said was that 'these kids have a lot on the line.' Because of what else he was talking about at the time I thought to myself that yeah, more than two of these guys have a lot on the line. So treat them all fair. Start who deserves to start. And he did say they will have to evaluate that also. Give minutes to who deserves minutes. The ones that are behind, get in the gym double time or accept your role or go somewhere you are better or don't have to work as hard.

I really don't care who starts or gets the minutes, as long as it is fair to every player on the team and the team as a whole. Agreed?

It's just hard to get too excited about a game like Stonehill. They ran a nice offense and shot the lights out, but they played no defense whatsoever. Now putting 84 up on KU was impressive, especially when we relied totally on threes and transition that game, no inside presence. But we really won't know a lot until we get Bradshaw, Z-man and/or Ugonna and start playing more quality opponents.

I wonder what rat account @UK_Born_an_Bread is posting under now. He swore up and down Reed Sheppard was overrated and wouldn’t help until 2025 and Antonio Reeves would transfer in August. Big rat energy, too bad he went into hiding.
