shawn kirk?

I think a lot of people are forgetting.... we have to have 10 guys to practice.

We aren't going to have 10 McD's.... what do you think this is..... 2014?

Seriously, we have to replace 7. We will be playing 6 or 7...... but gotta have 10 to practice.

Why? 3rd best player in North Carolina, athletic SF that can shoot, 247 has him rated as a 4 star 94 overall. Averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 blocks per game last season. Why the pessimism?

Those sound like pretty impressive numbers actually. Was he playing against top level competition at his high school or a lower level? I have no knowledge of this class until seeing this stuff on the board today so please excuse my questions. If he was this good against solid competition you would think he would have been sought after more than he was, just my thinking anyway.

I'm not sure what school his division was, or if schools have divisions in basketball in North Carolina (I know they don't in Kentucky, but that's it. Everything is All-A in Kentucky), but he winded up on an elite AAU team, so I'm assuming he played against elite competition in high school ball. His AAU team alone has 2 elite high school players in the 2016 class on it, and it was named AAU program of the year.

I'm inching closer to the ledge now.

I'd like someone, with insight, to give us a "low down" on what is happening.

If you're seriously contemplating that over the possibility of getting a 4 star SF who can contribute for more than one year, then just remember to dive face first. You don't want the last thing that crosses your mind to be "Ow s***, my legs".
Kid may take a visit this weekend.

I was referring to "letting everything play out before we approach the metaphorical ledge".

I would like to snag Kirk, nothing wrong with adding high level athletes.

Just baffled as to why the massive amount of strikeouts.

Oh, well if you ever contemplate (Not encouraging it), at least take my advice.
And no real reason. Bill Self selling his soul so he ends the class with more than one PF, so he got a second PF. Coach K doing well as usual, but he doesn't have any real stars on that team. Ingram won't be a transcendent star, but he'll be good. Nice IQ, but when UK and Duke plays next season, I say let Poythress or something handle Ingram. Kid will struggle to get much production due to Poy being a lockdown defender, significantly better athlete, and outweighing him by about 50 pounds. Solid little PG coming in, but UK still has the top point guard in the class despite that. Also have the best overall player coming in. I'll take Skal > Duke's 3 star center recruit, or Chase Jeter, hands down. I'd even take Lee over Jeter in that game, based off of experience, athleticism, and defense. In a couple of years, Kennard will be very good for them, but for right now, he seems very inconsistent against tough competition. Didn't do much off the bench on the All-Star circuit.
Other elite players either going where family goes/is, or to LSU, which is odd to say the least. I wouldn't fret.

Heck the way that people are acting on this board you would think they hung banners for who ever got the most 5 star recruits. UK with all of its high five stars got beat by a team that likely did not have a five star.

Dekker was a 5 star.

Fantastic, then they have one 5 star. Kentucky has 5, and the rest are 4 stars.
HS ranking don't really matter when it comes to multi-year players.

You don't think a senior Frank Kaminsky would have been anything less than a five star if he was that good coming out of high school? Sophomore Bronson Koenig is as good as a freshmen five-star. Sophomore Nigel Hayes would be at least as good as a freshman 4-star, probably a five-star even. A senior Traevon Jackson is at least as good as a freshman four-star, maybe even a five-star.

Exactly what I've been saying all day. People are too caught up in a lot of this.

Only if he decommitted from NC State first, which is the unconfirmed talk, now that he received a UK offer.

Maybe I'm a bad human being, but I hope it's a sign that Cal is taking off the gloves and rejecting the "we don't talk down other programs" routine.

I hope he starts outing the negative recruiters and burning down their villages. As Kevin Spacey once said in the Usual Suspect - "showing these men of will what will really was."

It's only wrong if you never call them back.
Them being the coaches, after you recruit their players away from the school.

Cal tryna make dat NC State ass clap.
Whatever though, they kind of deserve it. 10 minutes after it was announced that the kid was offered (without knowing what time he was offered by UK), their fans start firing away, so have at 'em lol.

Hope this doesn't piss off the NC State fan base.. They basically brought down all the UNC stuff,, lol.. Tread lightly with that fan base..

Anybody could lead the NCAA to that mess. So much publicity made the horse drink though. I'm incredibly confident that UK doesn't have that shady mess going on, and if you don't feel the same, well, you have 48 posts, just hide it well around here.

"Unconfirmed talk" from who? If the kid never announced a decommitment, then he was still officially committed. Regardless of how we want to spin it, it does appear Cal went after a committed kid here. And you know, that doesn't really bother me, recruiting is cutthroat business.

And, for the record, EVERY coach "claims" he won't recruit committed players, but that doesn't necessarily mean they truly mean it. A verbal commitment sometimes just means you have to find a more subtle and discrete way to get the message to a kid. It does appear Cal went after a committed kid here, and I'm guessin there may've been some nudging in some prior cases as well (Trey Lyles, Terrence Jones, Derek Willis, etc.). But you know, lots of other coaches have done the same.

As I said earlier. Make dat ass clap. I don't care if we pillage the whole village, frankly. Not like NC State is going to ask Kentucky to come over to the table to have lunch with them anyway, but that's something that went around, as if it makes much difference.

Wasn't it reported that NC State got the verbal the same day that Cal offered? Seems to me there is a good chance Cal didn't even know he had given them his verbal.

This "controversy" is hilarious to me.

How come if a school/coach recruits a verbally committed basketball player, it's the worst thing in the world?

But if a school/coach recruits a verbally committed football player it's no big deal and viewed as business as usual.

Seems like a weird double standard.

I believe what I read was that the kid gave NC State his verbal on Saturday after some AAU event, but the commitment didn't get publically announced and reported until Monday morning. Cal then offered in a call made Monday night. Leaving the kid confused and wishing he'd waited a couple days.

So..... interpret that however you will.

Link?

Not that big a deal but, at the same time, is why I never listen to any coach, when they get too high & mighty & start with the "I never (fill in the blank)...stuff"
The truth is that none of them may "never"....until they need to.

My question is why? I could understand if this was a top 10 recruit that Cal had been working on for a while but he's a three star that no one here heard of until he committed to NC State. I guess if Cal really likes the kid but it just doesn't seem worth the trouble to me.

I've said this at least 30 times lol..
Where was Cal this past weekend, besides everywhere? Indianapolis.
Who played in Indianapolis? Team Loaded.
Who plays on team loaded? This kid, and 2 elite recruits in the 2016 class.
How did the offer come about? Cal watched his games, liked what he say.
Is it the first time he played well? No, he had an excellent run at Adidas Gauntlet in Texas right before they went to Indianapolis, and in high school last season, the kid averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 blocks (yes, blocks) per game in North Carolina.
Why am I confident that the kid can play? He's been averaging double figures on an elite AAU team, with two other elite players on it.
How elite is the AAU team? It won AAU program of the year.

Can you link to your 30 posts that said all this?

I can guarantee zero of those posts are in this thread.

My posts are more like flyers. You put all your flyers in one place, not as many people see the,. You put a bunch of flyers all over the place, and more people see them. Marketing 101, lassy.
But there's your flyer. There's no reason why we shouldn't. At 6'7, 185#, the kid is a ridiculous athlete, scores the ball pretty well, and is an outstanding defender (averages 2 steals per game as well as those 5 blocks per game during last season), and on the AAU circuit, he's still averaging 2 steals per game. History tells us that we do pretty well with true, athletic small forwards that defend really well.
Doesn't hurt that this guy is a combo forward either. Gives us more ability to go small if necessary, adds some form of depth to the frontcourt, as well as providing for the small forward position.

Your posts are over the top over-sensitive defenses to anyone that dares say one negative word about Cal. On top of that, you present your opinions as if they are some sort of facts and that people are stupid if they don't believe them just because you throw them out there.

to be honest, it's probably just the sheer numbers involved. you have 20+ in a football class, but most schools have 3-5 in a basketball class. so taking one committed football player from another school is not such a big deal. but taking one of a school's three b-ball commits, especially if he's a bluechip, hurts much more.

Qoute from Charlotte Observer about the situation:

"Kirk, A 6 foot 6 small forward, visited NC State on Monday and was offered a scholarship. Told coaches he was going to commit. But Monday night, Coach Calipari called Kirk, according to his high school coach."

Loved this quote from his coach: " I love NC State, but when you go home and, from a business aspect, Kentucky calls you, I know what I would do."
