Still games to play with 1 Loss A&M and 1 Loss Texas to still play each other but Ga. done at 6-2. So it looks like Texas or A&M in Championship but probably have Ga.,Tenn,Bama and loser of Texas and A&M all at 6-2. So who is the 6-2 team in Championship? And yes i got Texas beating UK next week..

To me, it should be GA. They've played 5/6 of the 6-2+ teams & are 3-2. No other team played more than 3: TN is 1-2. A&M/OM/TN have each lost to a team not in top 6.

I would assume it would be UGA as well since they beat Texas (assuming Texas finishes 7 and 1).

Will be interesting to see how the committee seeds the sec. I would assume the loser n sec title game will be 2nd amonst sec teams despite potentially picking up a 3rd overall loss.

It's looking like Penn state, notre Dame and Indiana will all finish with 1 loss each. And then osu or Oregon will not get a bye. Will the 3 potential sec at large teams all have to play on the road?

I dont agree with the logic but can definitely see that happening. Lazy by the committee if so as they are just rewarding teams with less losses that most played weaker schedules.

If I understand correctly, the tiebreaker for all those two loss teams is the combined record of their opponents instead of trying to untangle the web of head to head results. There’s still some moving parts, but Alabama comes out ahead of the pack in that as long as they take care of Oklahoma and Auburn and I believe as long as Missouri beats either Mississippi St or Arkansas. Then obviously the Texas/A&M winner would get the other spot as long as they take care of their other games.

SEC Tiebreakers:
  • A. Head-to-head competition against the tied teams
  • B. Record versus all common conference opponents
  • C. Record against highest (best) placed common conference opponent in the conference standings, and proceeding through the conference standings among the tied teams
  • D. Cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents among the tied teams
  • E. Capped relative total scoring margin versus all conference opponents among the tied teams
  • F. Random draw of tied teams
The SEC could have 5-6 teams with 2 losses. I'm still not sure if a Championship Game helps or hurts a conference. Seems like the loser of the championship game will be the conference "runner up" but with 3 losses will they get in the CFP?

Also, sooner or later we'll have a situation with 2 teams playing each other 3 times in a year: regular season, championship game, and meeting again in the playoffs. Not good. It could happen this year with Texas/Georgia and Oregon/Ohio State.

Fascinating point about the loser having 3 losses.

100% they make playoff IMO. They shouldn't be punished for losing n a conference title game.

I think the sec and big 10 title game losers will always be in no matter what.

I have read that the winner of Texas and Texas A&M will play in the SEC championship game against an opponent decided by the various tie-breakers, most likely Alabama. I think I would have kept the SEC East winner - SEC West winner system myself.

I understand the SEC tiebreaker system, but isn’t there still a committee, who ranks the top 12 and is that not the final basis of playoff consideration?

Sure, I know being ranked 11th or 12th is no guarantee, as a G5, P4 conference champions and Notre Dame are all in play, but I thought there was still a committee ranking. Frankly, given that we are not in sniffing distance, I have not even read about this this season.

We already had UGA/ Bama play twice. Would it really be bad if OSU beats Oregon then they meet again in the championship?

Ole Miss is 1-0. Not sure how they will determine it but they keep projecting Texas vs Bama.
Basically, tiebreakers A through C only get applied if all of the tied teams have played each other or if they’ve all played the same opponents or the top seed. That won’t be the case with the 5-way tie that currently looks likely, so they’ll go straight to tiebreaker D, in which case Alabama’s schedule will have the strongest conference record as long as Missouri wins another game.

It’s a pretty convoluted way to potentially determine a conference champion, but some system like that is pretty much necessitated by forming a conference so big that a given team is literally only playing against half of the possible opponents in a given season. Just another way the expansion stuff has gotten silly to me.

If a loss would knock me out of the 12-team playoff, can a team opt out of the SEC Championship Game? Why take a chance and lose out on the opportunity to play for all the marbles? If a loss doesn't matter, should all the best players sit out the SECC Game to be healthy and rested for the playoffs?

Very quickly, the conference championship games will go away, I believe. No reason to play them if a team who is a lower seed in the playoffs rankings would lose their spot with a loss - none.

This is what I predicted might happen. A championship game is meaningless with the 12 team playoff format IMO. It's just a way of scheduling another game for the cash. The loser of this game winds up the big loser having to play an extra game before the playoffs but also not getting a first round bye. The whole thing is dumb IMO.

I was against this format from the star, Texas is in because I don't see, ARM beating them. Bama and OM both beat us but both have not good losses, UT has a top 10 win but a bad loss, ATM was blown out by Carolina, non ranked at the time. But everyone is saying Bama is the 2 loss team, why? They have the hth over us, but not the vols and both have bad losses.

I read the format. The h2h won’t matter since there are too many tied and not all have played each other. It was something like record against common opponents and against the better teams. I keep hearing Bama but UGA has better wins. Who knows. Might be better if you miss that game and get to rest a week. Unless you win it and get the bye. What would make it even more interesting would be if somehow UK beat Texas and then Texas beat aTm and they were all tied. 😂

Bama has the tie breaker over UGA.
