SEC teams in new AP poll

I remember when the SEC Network got started, someone said it would have a big impact on SEC bball. I didn’t really buy it at first bc most games (not featuring UK) were half filled gyms with not so great teams.

Slowly but surly though, teams started hiring good coaches who brought in top talent. Now we got one of the strongest bball leagues.

Whoever wins the league will earn it, and being in the top 4 will be a great accomplishment.

Football $$$$ has fed basketball $$$$

Little House on the Prairie was a two part show and it caused them to miss the shoot around
You know that’s really unbelievable. He left and took the players with him and had some recruits. Also, Pope came and had nothing to start with. Kentucky sits in a good position and Arkansas is not even in the top nine that are in the top 25 out of the SEC. I said unbelievable, but not really.

Yeah, apparently they just missed the pre-game shoot around, per Cal. Just a minor blip before the comeback.
Camp Cal first....Then the Tweak.

This all started when the conference hired Greg Sankey to promote the conference......

Duke is the only ACC team in the top 25? How often does the ACC only have one ranked team? Wow.
I'm not sure but they have been down for a few years. I love it but hate that 3 teams I can't stand are in that conference so when they are even mediocre they are going to win a lot of games still. Screw Duke UNC and little brother.

Trends have a tendency to come full circle, but the coaching in the ACC is nowhere close to when K, Williams, Boeheim and Bennett ran the ACC. There is not one current coach in the ACC that can hold a candle to the coaches in the past few years. I don't see that changing for awhile, which means the ACC is going to continue to wallow in mediocrity.

The SEC, however, has 5 or 6 coaches that are or are close to elite. I don't even put Pope in that group, yet. Give him a little time and he will join Pearl, Oates, etc. in the top echelon of SEC and national coaches. He is close though.

Was curious about Miss St since people were mentioning

Preseason 32nd Kenpom, now 16th. So 14th in polls seems reasonable.

For the large portion of their schedule hovering in the 20s but the 13 point win over Memphis and 35 point win over South Carolina really pushed them up.

Definitely a good team. Offense very good. 59th in effective FG%, they don't turn it over and they rebound well.

The only negatives in their four factors is they don't get to the line much on offense and they foul quite a bit. In the foul fest that is known as the SEC, they could have some games where the FT discrepency is too much to overcome.

Other than that tho....solid.

Mississippi State is the dark horse. Need to scout them. They seem to have overachieved so far.

Vandy hosts Mississippi State tomorrow night at 8pm ct in Memorial Gym. I’m fired up, will be there with wife and kids. Both teams are 13-1, MSU with the better resume, should be electric.

Good luck against Georgia, Cat fans!!

Over the next twelve days we play teams in the top 15, the top ten, and the top five.

In that time Duke doesn’t play a single ranked squad.

Not holding my breath but assuming we hypothetically swept all those opponents, would we leapfrog Duke? Go higher than that?

I know they don’t like to let teams leapfrog people who don’t lose. But at what point do you have to cry uncle? That would leave us with six marquee wins already in mid January. Low probabilities all around. But an SEC this strong sure makes for some interesting technical possibilities.

I actually thought Vandy might be ranked in the latest poll. Not only were they not ranked but they were at the bottom of others receiving votes.
I never looked at their non conference schedule. Was it that weak?

It's really bad. It's entirely possible LSU was their best opponent of the season so far. Unless you count Drake as better, who they lost to.

Bye bye Arky.

I know we're digging on Cal, but that aside, they really don't have any bad losses. They lost to a T10 Baylor, a damn good Illini team, and the No. 1 team in the country. Not defending them at all, but it's not like they've lost to anyone terrible.

Same goes for us really. SEC is just a damn nightmare right now.

Probably. Tho I'm not certain it matters a whole lot.

Only thing that really matters is seeding. We'll have so many opportunities for big wins this season. Way way way more than Duke.

If the season goes well, there is zero doubt in my mind we 1) have a better resume than Duke and 2) are seeded higher than they are because of said resume.

These games are wild. The next five and KP predictions:
vs UGA (UK by 1)
@ Miss ST (Miss St by 4)
Texas AM (UK by 3)
Alabama (UK by 1)
@ Vandy (UK by 1)

So favored in four of five but three of those by a single point.

And February doesn't get much better with two games vs UT and a trip to Miss.

Non conference was weak but we destroyed everyone.

The biggest issue is that a few of the computer rankings metrics have a pre season bias that has hurt us so far because we were like 100th or worse to start the season. As soon as the preseason bias drops off later in this month, you’ll see our computer rankings all look better.

We played 3 neutral (Nevada, Seton Hall and Drake) games and 2 away games (at Va Tech and at TCU). California at home and basically all of our decent games ended up being not that good.

But I feel like we have a pretty good team. We’ll know more tonight and over the next few weeks.

We would beat Drake today. We played with tired legs and shot it horribly, just played horribly against Drake (who is pretty good but not great).

I agree that winning on the road at LSU is our best win.

Admittedly haven't saw them play yet. But regardless of opponent. Winning a lot of Non conference games by several points is usually a pretty good indication of a good solid team.
How many SEC games to you think they must win to get a tournament bid? 9? Or would 8-10 get them in with the conference being so strong?
My guess is around 9 teams get in possibly 10. I don't see 12 getting in. Been hearing that 12 might. But I don't see that. Not saying the SEC doesn't have 12 tournament worthy teams. But doubt the committee takes that many.
