New AP Poll

@Smashcat or whoever, what are the odds on each of the top 12 teams in the new poll of winning the NC? That was a pretty eye opening stat they gave the other night that said the NC winner has come from one of the top 12 teams in the AP poll that comes out this week of December for quite a few straight years.

There should be a point when strength of schedule plays a little bit of a role in the voting. And their strength of schedule is not going to be anywhere close to ours. Then again, there is no logic. There’s only favoritism.
Metrics don’t agree. According to KenPom, their strength of schedule is 14 in the country, we are 72. If we played higher caliber teams in November and still had a better record, we would be ranked higher. Torvik, KenPom, and NCAA Net all agree with this ranking. Glad they have Kansas below us though; that would have been a basis for outage if it was flip flopped!

I wonder if the Duke weak schedule will help or hurt them. It will give them a top seed but will they be prepared? I wonder? We will see it all by the end of the season.

If Duke earns an inch, AP voters are going to carry them a mile. Not shocked at all that Duke moved ahead of us just for this reason.

We played 4, 8 and 16.. and we only lost to one of them. That's pretty good. And Ohio St. Isn't far behind. They might find themselves receiving votes or possibly being ranked when we play them.

If they dominate the ACC, it probably helps. If they slip up, it will destroy them.

In all fairness, Duke beat Auburn and Louisville and we lost to Clemson and beat Gonzaga. We lost to an unranked team, Duke beat their unranked team.
However we lost on the road and Clemson was 26th just outside of ranking and is now ranked while Dooks 1 good win was at home. Then we had a big win on the road. Not many ways to justify it let alone 1 vs 2 losses and a recent head to head win.

I also don't think Louisville is as good as Clemson.

I know Auburn has beaten 3 highly ranked (at the time they played) opponents (Houston, Iowa State, UNC), 2 who were Top 5 at the time. But Auburn lost to Duke, yet stayed at #2 in the AP Poll. Their win on Sunday was by 44 points to 4-5 Richmond. Is it because their loss was to Duke that they stayed #2 in the AP Poll? Does that seem right? If Auburn’s win versus Iowa State on 11/25 is causing them to be ranked higher than Iowa State, then I think our win over Duke should matter in that regard, as well. Thoughts?

I always laugh when you guys analyze these polls complaining about who is above who and arguing why we should be in front of Duke. Poll voters barely watch the games. They just look up who won and jot down their rankings. Having a team ranked ahead of a team who beat them is not uncommon and happens all the time in both the basketball and football polls.
It doesn't happen in CBB with less than 10 total games played, a head to head on the record, the team that lost the H2H but is ranked higher having more total losses as well. Its different if a team has a H2H win but ranked lower after 50%+ of the season has been played and there is more data points to compare teams.
