I kind of wonder if hybrid type players like SKJ make it difficult for them to land top10 rankings. The theory being that while he can play multiple positions with many facets of the game, they might not have one single area of dominance. Does the pure center or prototypical point guard get more recognition being in a more traditional role? And also, showing their pure position skills 100% of the time?

I don't know, just a thought.

Don't think that really applies here. SKJ is a bit of a late bloomer. His stock is soaring after the summer.

Got it. I also meant it more in general, nothing at all against SKJ.. Wondering if these "jack of all trade" types may not get the recognition they deserve.

Awesome player....can operate at 4 or 5....great to pull kid out of UNC backyard......

It is simply wonderful to have cal reloading the roster....great time to be a UK fan.

Welcome SKJ!!

everywhere other than 247 (18th) has him outside the top 40. They've all said he's moving up when rankings are updated.

Thanks, Jason, just what I've been seeing too and the fact that he will be jumping in the newer rankings when they come out. Really glad to see him as our first in the class and this should just only be the beginning of what could be an outstanding class. This season hasn't even arrived and we're all already getting excited about future classes, only at Kentucky.

Willis was 129th in the 24/7 composite ranking. He'd never be on the team if he weren't from Kentucky.

If my memory is correct, he was ranked a lot higher than that at the time he committed (70-80 range I think... a definite four star). I remember there being some pressure for Cal to get him because people were "afraid" he'd go to UL or Indiana, who were recruiting him earlier.

I don't know about the entire composite, but I do believe he was 70-80 in Rivals. I'm fine with taking any top 150 in state talent, though. They might pan out to be valuable role players, and if not we get some practice bodies that probably still enjoy being at UK. And keeping them away from UL is good as well.

Bossi said he will move up in the rankings when they come out. Could be a 5 star.

Didn't realize the guy plays his HS ball in my hometown. I go back there for a weekend once a month so I am going to have to check out one of his games this year.

Cal is the best at catching these young up and coming blue chips.

I'm with @Aike on this one. North Carolina picked a terrible time to hit their down spout with scandals and whatnot. I love taking north Caroline's prospects, and we also got the best one since Jordan, Wall.

When do we start staying UNC who?

Probably play him at the 5, unless Ayton reclassifies and comes.
Then he can sell giles at the 4 and Gabriel/bridges to play the 3.
Throw in 2 of monk/fultz/fox/Alkins and we will be loaded.
I know, I know...Giles is going to Duke.
I still think UK might have more of a chance than people think.
Cousins, jones, Davis, Noel, towns, stein and skal will be next.
Has to be hard for Giles not to see that, especially Davis and then towns going #1 over okafor.
We will see.

I don't think Cal is ever pressured by anyone to pick a kid. The man and his staff seem to pick and choose the right kids for his team almost every year.

Love this Kid as he really can handle a ball and if you are don't know how tall he is you would think he is a SF . As I think TJ said on the other board if Lyles can play the 3 for Cal then SKJ can as he is way more a 3 then lyles ever will be IMO but obviously he is stretch 4 . A center he is not . But we got C on lock with Humphries , Wynyard and Ayton whenever he commits .

One thing I appreciate about Cal's recruiting is how often he's able to spot and catch the late developing guys (AD, WCS, SKJ), while avoiding the guys that developed early and then stopped (Troy Williams, Shabazz Muhammed).

I disagree with this mindset.

I think EVERYONE knew about AD. It seems unanimous that SKJ had a huge summer, and Cal isn't seeing a diamond in the rough that no one else has spotted.

Moreso, what you say about the others. Cal WANTED Shabazz. He didn't back off of him because "Oh, he stopped developing." Shabazz had 18 and 5 at UCLA. If you believe Cal develops players--Shabazz would have succeeded at UK.
