Sacha Killeya-Jones Has Committed to Kentucky

Great news! Just saw Markelle fultz had a couple new UK picks on the crystal ball, one being Andrew slater who is usually right on point. Hopefully have a few commits for early signing period.

Matt Jones said last night he expected a commitment from one of our top 3 or 4 targets before BBM.

Wonder if he was talking about SKJ or someone else.

Who cares where he is ranked - didn't Cauley-Stein teach us that. If Coach Cal likes and wants him - I am pumped about him. Great addition...next years class is going to be one of the best we have had - hard to imagine.

This signing makes perfect sense. Everyone is projecting Jones as a 4, but I wonder if Cal is looking at him as a potential center. Either way, it gives UK versatility at the 4/5, without closing off the possibility of UK signing someone else at the 4 if Cal could somehow pull a miracle with Giles or Adebayo. Or bringing in Ayton if that somehow becomes an option.

Jones fits the Marcus Camby template that Cal clearly loves (and which has been great for him). If UK ends up with Humphries, Wynyard, and Jones, it might not match the star talent Cal's often had at the 4/5, but it's at least a mix of intriguing frontcourt talent in a recruiting year that's pretty short on quality big guys.

He's ranked 18 overall in 2016 by 247. They seem to update their rankings before the other services. If he's that high in 247, he will likely be ranked in that high 4, lower 5 area. Everyone says he had a great summer too, could go up, but rankings don't really matter. The kid really has a nice shot and smooth handles at 6'10". Good pick up

One thing I appreciate about Cal's recruiting is how often he's able to spot and catch the late developing guys (AD, WCS, SKJ), while avoiding the guys that developed early and then stopped (Troy Williams, Shabazz Muhammed).

Derek Willis falls into that category too

The money quote from Jones:

"I know going to play for Coach Cal at Kentucky means I will be playing against great players in practice," Killeya-Jones said. "That's what I was looking for, because it will help me develop as a player and prepare me for the games. I know I have to earn my playing time."

They compliment his offensive game, and compare him to Adreian Payne and Channing Frye.

They seem totally convinced that he's a 4, but as I already said, I'm not. He's very skinny, but he's 6'11", pretty long, and a solid athlete. His NBA future might be at the 4, but he's exactly the type of guy that Cal has a history of playing at the 5. That will obviously depend on who else is on the roster, but I'm betting Cal sees that size and length and envisions what he can do with it defensively in the lane.

Very young, great frame and great skills for his size. Exactly the kind of kid Cal excels at developing.
